Egypt sets opening of $1 bn Pyramids museum for Nov 1
TDT | Cairo Egypt said yesterday that its much-anticipated new $1-billion archaeological museum near the Pyramids of Giza will officially open on November 1 after several delays. Authorities hope that the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), which boasts the treasures of Tutankhamun among its collection of more than 100,000 ancient Egyptian artefacts, will attract visitors from around the world. Official say that at 50 hectares (124 acres), the museum will be the largest in the world dedicated to a single civilisation. Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly told a cabinet meeting that President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had approved the new opening date. He said the opening would 'an exceptional event' that would showcase Egypt's cultural heritage and attract visitors from around the world. It had been set for July 3 but was postponed when Israel attacked Iranian nuclear facilities on June 13 sparking a 12-day war that closed airspace across much of the Middle East. The project has faced a series of setbacks, including political unrest and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Authorities anticipate that the museum will draw five million visitors per year in a major boost to the tourism industry, which is a key foreign exchange earner for Egypt.

As the first institution in the Middle East to be accredited by Gem-A, DANAT will offer these advanced academic tracks starting in September, sponsored by the Labour Fund (Tamkeen). Obtaining the internationally recognized Gemmology Diploma Programme certificate unlocks a wealth of career opportunities in the fast-growing global gemstone market, where demand for qualified experts continues to rise. This demand is particularly significant in light of the limited number of Bahraini professionals in the field and the increasing need to develop local expertise. As a result, programme graduates are well-equipped to pursue rewarding careers across both the local and international jewelry industries. The programme is part of DANAT's broader initiative to offer globally certified educational opportunities in gemmological sciences. Participants will also have access to the use of internationally respected professional titles, including FGA, which denotes completion of the Gemmology Diploma. The Gem-A Gemmology Foundation Programme is designed to support individuals aspiring to build or advance a career in the gemstone and jewellery sectors. It provides a rigorous introduction to the field and is particularly valuable for those looking to establish a strong foundational skillset. With over 110 years of expertise embedded in its curriculum, the programme is delivered by a team of experienced and certified instructors. The programme spans 16 weeks, with instruction held one day per week over a four-month period. Participants will engage in over 300 hours of integrated theoretical and practical training, delivered within a cutting-edge educational setting designed to foster personalised learning and skill development. Commenting on the launch, Mrs. Noora Jamsheer, CEO of DANAT, highlighted the programme's transformative potential: 'This internationally accredited programme presents a valuable opportunity for individuals aspiring to build a sustainable and impactful career in the gemstone sector, whether in the fields of research, academia, laboratory analysis, or the commercial jewellery industry. By enrolling in these programmes, participants gain access to cutting-edge knowledge and hands-on expertise that empower them to launch entrepreneurial initiatives, strengthen their investment acumen in gemstones, and explore a broad spectrum of roles across the entire jewellery industry.' Mrs. Jamsheer further affirmed her confidence in the role these programmes will play in addressing regional talent gaps, and emphasised their alignment with Bahrain's Vision 2030, particularly in nurturing human capital in specialised strategic fields. By cultivating a new generation of highly qualified gemmological professionals, DANAT reinforces its dedication to advancing Bahrain's status as a global hub for gemstones and jewellery expertise and ensuring long-term industry development in line with international standards.

DCT Abu Dhabi launches emirate-wide face recognition system in hotels
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), through its Licensing & Regulatory Compliance Department, is deploying a cutting-edge Face Recognition System to further elevate efficiency and safety across the emirate's hotels, for both guests and employees. The initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi's number one ranking globally in safety and security, holding the title of World's Safest City in Numbeo's Safety Index for nine consecutive years. Unveiled during the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, the Face Recognition System is designed to enhance guest verification processes, improve the overall guest experience, simplify procedures and significantly reduce check-in time. It has been launched following the signing of a cooperation agreement between DCT Abu Dhabi and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP). Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, Director General for Tourism, DCT Abu Dhabi, said: 'The integration of the Face Recognition System underscores our shared commitment to pioneering advancements in smart tourism. This initiative reflects our commitment to leveraging innovation to enhance the guest experience while maintaining the highest standards of safety and security for both guests and hospitality sector employees. By working closely with ICP and our hotel partners and national authorities, we are ensuring a seamless, safer and more connected journey for every visitor.' This marks the first government-led initiative in Abu Dhabi to introduce face recognition technology in partnership with hotels, highlighting a forward-looking approach to security and hospitality. The system is now in a pilot phase at a handful of select hotels in the emirate. The first phase of the full rollout will commence across five-star hotels in Abu Dhabi city, the Al Ain Region, and the Al Dhafra Region, followed later by a second phase targeting four-star hotels, with gradual expansion to all remaining hotel categories. DCT Abu Dhabi is working closely with hotels to ensure a smooth rollout of the system. This includes direct communication, detailed system briefings, and the provision of technical and training support. By streamlining check-in and check-out procedures, the technology also boosts operational efficiency and provides guests with a seamless, tech-enabled experience. The facial recognition system captures and analyses biometric data during guest check-in. The data is securely encrypted, retrieved from ICP and transmitted to a centralized database managed by DCT Abu Dhabi. In accordance with UAE cybersecurity and data privacy regulations. The data will be used exclusively for enhancing guest safety and streamlining hotel operations, while strictly adhering to legal and ethical standards. The cooperation agreement between DCT Abu Dhabi and ICP covers several strategic areas aimed at supporting digital transformation in Abu Dhabi's tourism sector. The agreement involves pilot projects, development of data protection mechanisms, and ensuring system integration between the two parties. The collaboration seeks to promote innovation, improve operational efficiency, and achieve the highest standards of cybersecurity and privacy, contributing to better tourism service quality and supporting the UAE's digitalisation efforts. - TradeArabia News Service
