After the Springboks had spectacularly beaten the Wallabies in the opening match of the 1995 World Cup on Thursday, May 25, several pool matches ensued the next day.
South Africa were in Pool A, with Romania, Canada and Australia, and on the Friday it was the turn of the eastern Europeans and the hardy Canucks from North America.
Canada had a handy team in that period. The game was still amateur and they could reasonably compete, as the Boks would discover later in the tournament when they had to fight for their lives in Port Elizabeth.

Canada had world class players — some of whom were based in Europe — in captain and lock Al Charron, prop Rod Snow and the very good flyhalf Gareth Rees. The latter two played for Newport (now the Dragons) in Wales.
They also boasted the Western Province centre Christian Stewart. He had been ignored by the Springboks but qualified for Canada via ancestry.
The Romanians were mostly tough soldiers. Rugby was big in the army in that part of the world and Romania took some big European scalps in the amateur era.
This match took place at the Boet Erasmus Stadium in Port Elizabeth and 8 000 locals watched the Canadians grind out a 34-3 win.
Charron, Snow and No 8 Colin McKenzie scored tries while Rees was in good form with the boot. He kicked two conversions four penalties and a drop goal.

Ballon d'Or 'should go to Champions League winner', says Ronaldo

Is Dembele the favourite for the Ballon d'Or? Paris Saint-Germain's French forward Ousmane Dembele brings the UEFA Champions League's trophy on Court Philippe-Chatrier on on day 9 at the Roland-Garros Complex in Paris. Dembele has been backed by France teammate Kylian Mbappe to win the Ballon d'Or. Photo: Alain Jocard/AFP Image: Alain Jocard/AFP Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo said Saturday the individual honour should be awarded to a player who won the Champions League. Speaking ahead of Sunday's Nations League final in Munich between Portugal and Spain, the veteran said "trophies" should determine who wins the Ballon d'Or. "In my opinion, whoever wins it should be on a team that has won trophies. The Ballon d'Or winner should be in a team that has won the Champions League," the 40-year-old forward told reporters. First awarded in 1956 by French magazine France Football, the Ballon d'Or is awarded to the player considered the best over the previous season. Next Stay Close ✕ Paris Saint-Germain's 5-0 thumping of Inter Milan in the Champions League final last Saturday led to growing calls for Ousmane Dembele to win this season's gong. Spain starlet Lamine Yamal's superb display in Thursday's 5-4 Nations League semi-final win over France however had some arguing the teenager should be awarded the Ballon d'Or, which would make the 17-year-old the youngest winner in its history. France coach Didier Deschamps backed Dembele for the award, saying "considering the season Ousmane is having, he deserves it and that's all I wish for him". At a press conference in Stuttgart on Saturday, France captain Kylian Mbappe told reporters he backed Dembele. "Does anyone really need me to explain? Right now we're talking about Lamine Yamal and Ousmane Dembele, but I'm voting for Dembele." Ronaldo said he "cannot tell you who deserves it" this season. Ronaldo's five wins is bettered only by Argentinian Lionel Messi, who has won the award eight times. The duo had a monopoly on the award for a decade from Ronaldo's first win in 2008 to his last in 2017. The current holder is Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri. Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos applauds Khulumani Ndamane's superb debut

Khulumani Ndamane Khulumani Ndamane of South Africa challenged by Selemani Mwalimu of Tanzania during the 2025 International Friendly match at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. | BackpagePix Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has applauded 21-year-old Khulumani Ndamane for his standout performance during his international debut against Tanzania in Polokwane on Friday. Despite the youthful side being held to a goalless draw by the Taifa Stars, Ndamane's contributions on the pitch did not go unnoticed, earning him the coveted 'Player of the Match' award. Ndamane was in the news earlier this year when he was named in the squad to play in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin in March. However, a hiccup arose when it was discovered that the TS Galaxy defender did not possess a valid passport, and he was dropped. Fast forward a few months, and the 21-year-old Ndamane made his national team debut on Friday, showcasing his determination and talent. Broos was unequivocal in his admiration for the young defender's display. 'It means that he made a good performance,' he stated after the match, underscoring the importance of Ndamane's debut in the context of a largely inexperienced team. The Belgian coach, known for his discerning eye, remarked, 'I don't always agree with the Man of the Match, sometimes when I'm seeing the Man of the Match, it was someone else. "Today, when we see our team, you can see that Khulumani made a good performance for his first time in the team, and he deserves it.' Khulumani's debut is not only a personal milestone but also a reflection of the new direction Broos is taking with the team by involving younger players. As Bafana Bafana prepares for future challenges on the international stage, talents like Ndamane may very well play a pivotal role in the evolution of South Africa's football narrative. 'I said before that little by little, Bafana is getting old. So we must look at the future, and if you look at the performance from the young guys against Tanzania this evening, you can only be happy," said Broos. In the absence of the USA-bound Mamelodi Sundowns players, most of the squad was from the Premiership runners-up club Orlando Pirates. Broos said, initially, the team for the Tanzania clash included eight Pirates players. 'I remember that the first team we selected when the XI were on paper, we said, oh, s*&#, there are seven or eight players from Pirates, and we decided that we are not going to do that. So, we needed to find a balance. Players like (Simphiwe) Selepe and (Thalente) Mbatha are used to playing together," said Broos. 'So that helped those guys. Next week it will be (Mbekezeli) Mbokazi and (Nkosinathi) Sibisi. So, we looked at that. So that's the way we select these teams. The performance against Tanzania will give us more choices in the future, younger choices." Tanzania posed numerous challenges, which kept the South Africans at bay, despite their decided possession advantage. "The opponent (Tanzania) was not easy. They are a team playing behind the ball and then trying, in transition, to be dangerous. I think, as far as I can imagine, there was no (scoring) chance for Tanzania today, nothing, nothing," said Broos. "I couldn't have asked for more, I'm happy with the performance of some players, even very happy. Others could have been better, but again, for the first time, I can't be too harsh because the goodwill was there." Bafana Bafana will continue to build upon this experience as they prepare for their encounter against Mozambique at the same venue on Tuesday night.

Embracing the role of a veteran: Onthatile Zulu looks ahead to the Nations Cup

SA hockey star Onthatile Zulu is looking forward to her first big tournament experience since the Paris Olympics, as she embraces her role as one of the veterans in a young national team brimming with exciting talent. The SA women's national hockey team is gearing up for the FIH Women's Hockey Nations Cup 2 tournament in Poland from June 16 to 22 that includes Uruguay, Malaysia and hosts Poland. It is a platform for emerging national teams to showcase their talent on the international stage, with the opportunity to gain promotion to the FIH Nations Cup. 'Preparations are going well. Although I haven't been centralised with the team, playing league games weekly and training have helped me prepare physically and mentally,' said the 25-year-old hockey player who is based in Cape Town. 'I'm excited to head to an international competition, especially since the last big tournament dynamic I experienced was at the Olympic Games in Paris last year.' That was a second Olympic Games, the other being Tokyo, for a player whose storied hockey journey has also taken her to a World Cup and Commonwealth Games. 'The Olympic experience has elevated my game and experience. Competing against the best allows you to perform better and has greatly enhanced my knowledge of the game and tactics,' she said. She admits that being one of the senior members of the team brings with it extra responsibility, 'but the most important thing for me is to do my best for the team and lead by example on the field'. Her 64 caps is second only to Quanita Bobbs (180) in a squad where three players – Cerian Fourie, Daniela de Oliveira and Shanna Mendonca – will be in line to make their debuts. Three others have less than 20 caps. Fellow Paris 2024 Olympians such as Edith Molikoe, Hannah Pearce, Ntsopa Mokoena, and Ongeziwe Mali also add valuable experience to head coach Inky Zondi's team. Zulu fondly recalls the role players like Celia Seerane, Lilian du Plessis and Erin Christie played in supporting her as a young player coming through the ranks and is ready to pay it forward. 'I've learnt that nothing will be given to you; you need to work hard for the team to add value and contribute to its success. Playing with pride for my country is also a big lesson I aim to pass on,' she said. Hockey has been a significant part of Zulu's life since she first stepped onto the field at 6 years old, and she has been representing South Africa since 2019.
