Ghana bring in Schafer as Black Stars technical advisor
The 75-year-old German, who guided Cameroon to continental glory in 2002, has been appointed as director of football.
He will also serve as technical advisor for the Black Stars alongside head coach Otto Addo as the West Africans bid to improve their fortunes.
Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and will miss the finals for the first time since 2004, while they sit second in their 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifying group.
Only the group winners are guaranteed a place at the tournament in North America next year.
The Ghana FA has tasked Schafer with developing and implementing long-term strategic plans, leading youth development and ensuring "consistent high performances" by national sides.
Meanwhile, Ghana Under-20 coach Desmond Ofei has become assistant coach of the Black Stars, Kris Perquy has been appointed as team psychologist and fellow Belgian Gregory de Grauwe will serve as chief video analyst.

But would Arsenal be desperate enough to help their Big Six rivals out of jams? As for further long shots, Ollie Watkins is known as a long-time Arsenal fan, but would surely be looking for a more crucial role in an attack than Gyokeres' No. 2. If the Bengals are going to aim high, they might ask for someone like Cooper DeJean. In that case, there's nothing more to discuss. That's not to say that Hendrickson's value is below DeJean's level. The Bengals' pass rusher is among the best in the league, as he registered a league-high 17.5 sacks in 17 games last season. He also produced 46 tackles, which also marked a career-high for the seasoned veteran, who has 110 appearances under his belt. The Eagles have formed a bit of a youth movement lately. DeJean fits the timeline and is viewed as a future NFL star in Philadelphia. Trading a high-upside second-year player, along with a valuable pick, for a 30-year-old player, who wants to break the bank with a long-term deal, doesn't make a ton of sense for the Eagles—especially when you factor in the upcoming Jalen Carter contract discussions. Hendrickson might be a dream candidate for some in Philadelphia, but the Super Bowl champions aren't in need of a big swing like that at this time.
