Ashton teen inspires groundswell of sports equipment generosity
The matric pupil at Ashton International College Ballito was inspired to help after seeing the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls' Hockey Challenge's annual equipment drive advertised. He took to social media, rallying support on the North Coast and collecting the haul of pre-loved gear.
At the Grand Finals of the competition in Kloof on July 26, Matthew handed over the equipment, which will be distributed to aspiring young hockey players in need.
'You never quite know the ripple effect of giving until you see the smiles, the gratitude and the joy it brings,' said tournament director, Les Galloway.
'We would like to thank every team that contributed to our drive and especially this young man Matthew for his effort in bringing in this 'haul' – it will make a real difference.
'Matthew's selfless act stands as a shining example of youth leadership and the power of community collaboration. His story is a reminder that even small acts of kindness can create lasting change.'
Matthew was joined at the event by friends Tina Sarafidis and Anna-Maria Angelopoulous, who supported his initiative.
Now in its 15th year, the competition spans 10 regions across the province. This year's tournament concluded with St Mary's clinching the title, while Ashton proudly secured third place – its best finish in tournament history.

'The fire in me is fading' – Sundowns forgotten star on career struggles
Mamelodi Sundowns winger Thapelo Maseko has posted about his recent struggles at his club. The 21-year-old star has found it difficult to break into the Downs team since joining from SuperSport United two years ago. He only played a total of 14 league matches in three years for Masandawana and scored just once. His future at the club remains in doubt after he was left out of Mamelodi Sundowns' squad, which played in the FIFA Club World Cup. 'I don't know when it started, but lately it's like the fire in me is fading. I still train like my life depends on it, still push through every tired muscle, mental battle, but inside it feels empty,' Maseko posted on his Instagram page. 'The game that once lit up my soul is now different, heavier, and colder. It's a strange kind of pain, giving everything you have but feeling unseen. You tell yourself to keep going, but each day chips away at you. Your confidence starts to crumble, your joy fades, and the person you used to be feels like a memory you can't reach anymore. 'The hunger, the excitement, and the love for the grind have been slipping away piece by piece, now hope feels like something far off in the distance. 'I'm left wondering if I've ever get to that place again, this is what it's like to lose your spark and the hardest part is still showing up every single day, hoping you'll find it again,' the Sundowns winger said. Maseko was not featured in Downs' two matches this season and his exit looks more likely. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Kaizer Chiefs: Nasreddine Nabi to leave? Amakhosi management unhappy
Nasreddine Nabi faces an uncertain future at Kaizer Chiefs after a disappointing pre-season. Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi's future is under discussion. Amakhosi management is not happy with a couple of things. So, they are set to hold important talks with Nabi over his future soon. Amakhosi management is unpleased and unhappy with Nabi. They are unhappy with the poor results during Chiefs' recent pre-season of Netherlands. Furthermore, they are displeased with Nabi's attitude as well. 'To be honest with you, I don't know what is going to happen with the coach, but what I can tell you is that management is not competently happy with how things are going. They are not happy with the coach's attitude at times and were not convinced by the preseason preparations. They do want to address it,' the insider stated on SNL . Therefore, Chiefs are set to hold important talks with Nabi over his future. Meanwhile, Chiefs were spotted with a new coach and have a new captain who will usher in the new era of Amakhosi football. However, these talks have been placed on hold for now. That is because Nabi is dealing with personal issues. The current Chiefs head coach was not available for Amakhosi's BetWay Premiership opener against Stellenbosch FC. This is because his wife was involved in an accident. He is spending time with her during this time. Khalil Ben Youssef steps up as the interim coach. Therefore, as things stand, Nabi will resume his position as head coach when he returns. However, as disucssed, Amakhosi management are unhappy. So, they will be holding key talks with Nabi soon. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
