Sudden fault obstructs Libyan oil production

Saba Yemen08-02-2025

Tripoli - Saba:
The Mellitah Gas Complex had completely stopped working due to a sudden technical failure in the power generation units, the Libyan National Oil Corporation said on Saturday.
"The Mellitah Gas Complex was completely out of operation on Friday evening, due to a technical failure in the power generation units, which resulted in a complete blackout in all the complex's facilities, including the shutdown of the gas processing plant in the complex, and the cessation of production at the Bahr Essalam gas field," the Corporation stated in a statement.
According to the statement, "the company's specialists, engineers and technicians immediately dealt with this technical failure, and took all emergency measures followed in such incidental circumstances, after resorting to operating emergency power stations, and working to restart the gas processing plant and then operating the Bahr al-Salam platform and re-producing gas."
The National Oil Corporation added that "the maintenance teams at the Mellitah Gas Complex are working to repair this sudden technical failure within a short time, and to restart the complex at its normal capacity and continue production as usual."
The Mellitah Gas Complex is one of the most prominent oil facilities in Libya, and is located about 100 kilometers west of Tripoli. The complex is operated by Mellitah Oil and Gas Company, a joint venture between the Libyan National Oil Corporation and the Italian company "Eni."
The complex plays a pivotal role in the production and processing of natural gas, as it receives gas coming from the Bahr al-Salam offshore field, and works to process and compress it before distributing it locally or exporting it to Europe via the Green Stream pipeline to Italy. It also includes facilities for treating condensates and associated gases.
Given its strategic importance, the complex is a key resource for meeting the Libyan market's gas needs, in addition to being a major hub for exporting energy to European markets, making it one of the most vital assets in the Libyan oil and gas sector.

Leipzig, Wolfsburg Compete to Sign Coach Jacob Neestrup

Berlin – SABA: Media reports have revealed that German club RB Leipzig is interested in appointing Danish coach Jacob Neestrup as the team's new head coach. Neestrup, 37, is also reportedly a candidate for the managerial position at another Bundesliga club, VfL Wolfsburg. According to Kicker and Sport Bild newspapers on Tuesday, Leipzig's sporting director, Marcel Schäfer, has reached out to Neestrup. Leipzig, who failed to qualify for European competitions for the first time, is seeking a new manager to replace interim coach Zsolt Löw. Löw (46) had taken over after the sacking of Marco Rose in March. Rose has since returned to assist Jürgen Klopp in the sports management team of the Red Bull club group at the end of the season. European Stocks decline after Trump remarks on doubling Steel & Aluminum Tariffs

Washington – SABA: European stocks fell on Monday following U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of his intention to double tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. At the close of trading, European markets dropped amid rising fears of a new trade tension. Trump's announcement to raise tariffs from 25% to 50% triggered concerns and prompted the European Union to prepare for retaliatory measures. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index closed down by 0.1%, weighed by anxiety over looming U.S. trade policies that could reignite global trade conflicts. This comes after a strong performance in May, where the index gained 4%. Industrial stocks were particularly hit, with the European auto sector dropping 2.1%, the largest decline among all sectors. Shares of Stellantis on the Milan exchange plunged 5%, while major automakers like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Volkswagen saw losses ranging from 1.9% to 2.7%. Luxury goods companies, heavily reliant on exports, also suffered; the luxury sector index slipped 0.8%. Meanwhile, the European market volatility index rose by 4.3%, its highest level in a week, reflecting growing caution among investors. Steve Sosnick, chief market strategist at Interactive Brokers, commented, 'Markets have shifted into risk-off mode,' adding that 'each new statement from Trump has less impact than before, as investors have grown used to this rhetoric… However, it still can't be fully ignored.'
