WhatsApp Comes To iPad At Last: Here's Why They're A Dream Combo

Forbes5 days ago

WhatsApp launched in 2009, but there's never been a native app for the iPad —until now. On Tuesday, May 27, WhatsApp revealed that the new app is here. Here's what makes the iPad and WhatsApp so great together.
WhatsApp comes to the iPad. Finally.
Meta
In a blog post, WhatsApp described it as 'one of our biggest requests,' and declared that the app is now available on iPad. The company was keen to point out that all the key features are here, such as making 'video and audio calls with up to 32 people, share your screen, and use both front and back cameras,' it said.
There's no clue as to exactly what took so long — parent company Meta has been teasing that the app would be coming soon, and I've personally been agitating for its arrival for at least four years.
But let's look on the bright side, it's here now, and maybe the wait until is good news (except for the impatient among us).
That's because the iPad's features have been growing recently, with the addition of multitasking capabilities such as Stage Manager, though this is not on all iPads. WhatsApp notes that 'Stage Manager is available on iPad Pro with M4, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later) and iPad Air (5th generation), iPad Air 11-inch (M2 and later), iPad Air 13-inch (M2 and later),' and you'll notice that the regular iPad is not admitted to the Stage Manager party.
Still, there's also Split View and Slide Over to allow you to have WhatsApp open alongside another app, allowing you to surf the web at the same time as messaging on WhatsApp.
Optimized for the larger display of the iPad, the new WhatsApp app works with the Magic Keyboard, so it's as easy to type messages as it is on the Mac, but also, uniquely, with the Apple Pencil.
It remains as secure as ever: 'protecting your personal messages, calls and media with end-to-end encryption, no matter what platform or device you're messaging. Our extra layers of privacy, such as chat lock, mean that you can have private conversations in confidence even if you share your iPad with others,' WhatsApp says.
These capabilities together make for a seamlessly smooth experience, besting the iPhone for screen real estate and the Mac for touchscreen capabilities. What's not to like?

'Targeted terror attack' in Colorado - reports of several victims

The FBI says it is investigating a "targeted terror attack" in Colorado - with reports a man threw petrol bombs at people at a pro-Israel event. FBI Director Kash Patel said agents were on the scene and working with local law enforcement. Witnesses told US media the attacker threw Molotov cocktails at people doing a walk to remember Israeli hostages in Gaza. A male suspect is in custody. Local police said there were "several victims" and a large part of the downtown area had been cordoned off. Police chief Steve Redfearn said it happened around 1.26pm local time and initial reports were that "people were being set on fire". He said some victims were in hospital and injuries ranged from "very serious" to "minor". "When we arrived we encountered multiple victims that were injured, with injuries consistent with burns," Mr Redfearn told the media. He said a suspect had been pointed out and taken into custody without incident. "This area is not safe yet and we're dealing with a vehicle of interest," he added. Mr Redfearn said it happened as a "group of pro-Israel people" were taking part in a peaceful demonstration - but that the motive was unconfirmed and it was too early to call it a terror attack. In an earlier post on X, police said the incident is believed to have happened at 13th and Pearl streets. Boulder is a popular university city of about 105,000 people in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, just to the northwest of Denver. The Spectrum: Teachers' retirement fund; Meta at the Statehouse; Ohio governor's race

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – This week on The Spectrum: Lawmakers are looking to make changes to the board for the State Teachers Retirement System. 'Our consultants get rich, our investors get rich, our STRS management get rich,' CEO of the Ohio Retirement for Teachers Association Robin Rayfield said. 'The only people who don't get rich are the people who put the money in.' Hear from retirees on why they say it's nothing more than an attempt to strip away their power. A social media giant testifies at the Ohio Statehouse in support of a bill that would require parental consent for app downloads. 'This isn't really about tech companies,' Meta Head of Safety Policy for North America Jennifer Hanley said. 'It's about what parents want.' Hear from state leaders who said the proposal doesn't go far enough. Is the Republican primary for Ohio governor already over or is there still a way for another candidate, like Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel, to jump in and take on frontrunner Vivek Ramaswamy? Democratic strategist Brian Rothenberg and Republican strategist Will Hinman join the roundtable to weigh in.
