Hire local TVET grads first before foreign workers, Johari tells plantations
Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said industry players must provide proof of their efforts to hire TVET graduates to the ministry before they are permitted to recruit foreign workers.
"We are currently facing a situation where many industries are unwilling to hire graduates who have completed their training. They are reluctant to provide these students with the opportunity to gain practical experience because they prefer to take the easier route.
"Although the government has approved foreign workers for the plantation sector, I will not allow it unless industry players contribute to our local youth," he said when met at the Dialog@MPIC session here on Sunday (June 22).
Johari said the ministry will train about 250 TVET students annually in the plantation sector, and they will be placed in the industry based on the specific needs of the industry players.
He said industry players must train these students until they become skilled and future specialists in the plantation sector.
"I want to commend Sime Darby and FGV for their dedicated initiatives to provide accommodation and decent salaries for young individuals who did not attend university. These youths can earn a salary of RM2,500 if they develop their skills and complete a TVET Level 3 qualification, and in another eight months, they could earn up to RM3,500.
"…we must support these students in developing their careers. Otherwise, we're abandoning these youths, and that's not what we promised. Some industry players even refuse to hire them, and that's why I want to enforce this prerequisite. Currently, we depend on nearly 260,000 foreign workers to manage our plantations," he said.
Johari said the sector is vital as it represents the world's third-largest export industry, and within the national commodity sector, Malaysia exports approximately RM168 billion. He emphasised the need for industry players to take responsibility for mentoring and supporting these young talents. - Bernama

SD Guthrie posts 71pct higher net profit to RM1.07bil in first six months
KUALA LUMPUR: SD Guthrie Bhd posted a 71 per cent year-on-year (YoY) increase in net profit to RM1.07 billion for the first half of 2025, up from RM626 million in the same period last year. Group managing director Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha said the strong performance was largely driven by its upstream operations, which saw profits more than double, supported by higher crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel (PK) prices. CPO prices rose three per cent YoY to RM4,146 per tonne, while PK prices surged 50 per cent to RM3,247 per tonne, he said at a press conference on SD Guthrie's latest interim results here today. The group's fresh fruit bunch (FFB) production increased by four per cent across all segments. Helmy said CPO prices are expected to remain around RM4,000 per tonne for the rest of the year. For the second quarter ended June 30 2025 (Q2FY2025), chief financial officer Renaka Ramachandran reported a 22 per cent increase in net profit to RM505 million, compared to RM415 million in the same quarter last year. The group's revenue for the quarter rose 4.11 per cent to RM5.17 billion from RM4.97 billion previously. Its upstream operations continued to benefit from the favourable commodity prices and improved output, which underpinned the strong quarterly and half-yearly performance. For the downstream segment, SD Guthrie International (SDGI) saw a 44 per cent drop in profit before interest and tax (PBIT) to RM126 million in Q2FY2025, from RM225 million a year earlier and the segment was impacted by weaker demand and tighter margins across Asia Pacific and Europe. However, SDGI's Oceania operations delivered encouraging results, with higher sales volumes and margins contributing to commendable operating profits. The group advanced its industrial development efforts, including a strategic partnership with Permodalan Negeri Selangor Bhd to co-develop a food security and edu-tech hub on Carey Island. SD Guthrie expects palm oil prices to remain volatile as the industry enters its peak output cycle amid ongoing global uncertainties. Nevertheless, the group said improved weather conditions, better operating performance and continued progress in new business pillars are expected to support its growth trajectory. Helmy said by 2030, its two emerging business pillars namely industrial development and renewable energy (currently focused primarily on solar) are expected to contribute between RM700 million and RM800 million to its bottom line. This will represent close to 30 per cent of the group's overall earnings.

Opposition leader demands clarity over status, seating arrangement of six MPs no longer with Perikatan
KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has called on the Dewan Rakyat Speaker to clarify the seating arrangement and official status of six MPs who were sacked from Bersatu but have yet to be formally accepted by the government bloc. He said there appeared to be confusion, as the MPs in question no longer belonged to Perikatan Nasional and were also not recognised by the government. 'Where are these six supposed to sit? They've left Perikatan Nasional, but the government side refuses to accept them and claims, 'They're not ours, not part of the government',' he said during a press conference at the Parliament building here on Thursday (Aug 7). Hamzah, who is also Larut MP, urged reporters to verify the matter with Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, saying that Bersatu's Chief Whip Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee had already submitted a formal letter last year. 'So what was the black-and-white that the Speaker referred to yesterday? The Speaker needs to clarify,' he said. Addressing the six MPs directly, Hamzah stressed that they would not be fielded again under Perikatan Nasional in any future election. 'I want to inform these six - you will no longer be our candidates. The government side doesn't want you, and on our side, I'm sorry, we definitely will not accept you again. 100% - these six will not be our candidates. 'I want to make it clear to the public - Perikatan Nasional will not take in individuals who don't know where they stand,' he said. The six MPs in question are Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Datuk Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar) and Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang). They were issued termination letters by Bersatu on June 12 last year after failing to comply with a party directive to reaffirm loyalty to the party. Eight days later, Bersatu's Ronald Kiandee submitted a notice to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker requesting for their seats to be declared vacant. However, on July 10, 2024, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin revealed that Speaker Johari had informed the party that the six seats would not be vacated. Despite pledging support for the prime minister, the six continue to be seated in the Opposition bloc as no formal notification has been submitted to the Speaker regarding their defection. On Wednesday (Aug 6), Johari clarified that under the Federal Constitution and Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders, they remain Opposition MPs. 'There is not a single written statement addressed to me saying they want to leave the Opposition to join the government. 'So for me, they remain in that bloc, and that is why I haven't changed their seating arrangement,' Johari told the House.
