Ski jumping's suit-cheating saga rolls on as 5 Norwegians are charged over ‘manipulation'

Two Olympic gold medalist ski jumpers and three staffers on the powerful Norway men's team were charged with ethics violations Monday after an investigation into alleged tampering with ski suits at the world championships.
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation said star ski jumpers Marius Lindvik and Johann André Forfang, two coaches and a member of the service staff were formally charged as part of an investigation into 'equipment manipulation' at the Nordic worlds Norway hosted in March.
Illegally modified suits can help athletes fly further with more aerodynamic resistance.
The allegations – backed by video footage and quick confessions by team officials – shook the tight-knit communities of ski jumping and Norwegian sports when they emerged on the final weekend in Trondheim.
No timetable was given for hearings or verdicts in a case that intensifies less than six months before the next Winter Olympics open in northern Italy.
Bans, fines and disqualification of results are on the slate of punishments open to the FIS Ethics Committee, the governing body said in a statement.
Lindvik's gold medal in the men's normal hill event at the worlds held in Trondheim, plus Norway's bronze in the men's team event on the large hill are clearly at risk.
FIS said the investigation conducted 38 witness interviews and examined 88 pieces of evidence, and that no one else will be charged in the case.
Lindvik and Forfang, who both were in the team that took bronze, denied involvement in March though were disqualified from the individual large hill event and suspended by FIS for the rest of the season. Their charges were signed off by the FIS ruling council, the governing body said.
The 27-year-old Lindvik has been expected to defend his Olympic title next year in the men's large hill event at the Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Games. Forfang, now 30, took team gold on the large hill and individual silver on the normal hill at the 2018 Olympics held in South Korea.
Admissions of guilt were made in March by head coach Magnus Brevik and equipment manager Adrian Livelten, who said suits were altered only before the men's large hill event.
'We regret it like dogs, and I'm terribly sorry that this happened,' Brevik said at the time. A third team staffer, Thomas Lobben, also is now charged.
The manipulation was to increase the size of suits pre-approved and microchipped by FIS, and was captured on secretly filmed footage. It led to formal protests from the Austria, Slovenia and Poland teams.
The alterations could be confirmed only by tearing apart the seams of the crotch area on the Norwegian ski suits.
The case will be judged by three members of the ethics panel which must reach verdicts 'no later than 30 days after the hearing process is concluded,' FIS said.
FIS has already tightened up its rules on ski jump suits, something which caused a spate of disqualifications when athletes gathered for the first competition of the new season Saturday. FIS said that was down to technical issues and it didn't suspect 'ill intent.'

American sprinter Fred Kerley provisionally suspended for anti-doping 'whereabouts failures'

MONACO (AP) — U.S. Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley has been provisionally suspended for 'whereabouts failures' under the sport's anti-doping rules, the Athletics Integrity Unit said Tuesday. Lawyers for the 30-year-old Kerley hit back in a statement posted on the athlete's account on X. 'Fred Kerley has already notified the AIU that he intends to contest the allegation that he has violated the anti-doping rules related to whereabouts failures, as he strongly believes that one of (or) more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside either because he was not negligent or because the Doping Control Officer did not do what was reasonable under the circumstances to locate him at his designated location,' the statement said. It added: 'Fred will not comment further at this time out of respect for the process, and looks forward to presenting his case to the appointed hearing panel.' Kerley won the Olympic silver medal in the 100 meters at the Tokyo Games and the bronze in Paris last year. He has also earned six medals at the track and field world championships. 'You can try to break me in the storm, but all you're doing is giving me a better story at the finish line,' Kerley later posted on the same account. In May, Kerley was charged in Florida with punching a woman, a hurdler who also competed in the Olympics. That came just a few months after he was arrested for allegedly punching a Miami Beach police officer on Jan. 2, an incident in which police used a Taser on him. ___

Baltimore Ravens swim with Michael Phelps, get lessons from the Olympic champion

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — The Baltimore Ravens got their chance to swim with Michael Phelps. A couple of weeks after players shot video asking the 23-time Olympic champion — and Baltimore native — for swimming lessons, Phelps showed up at practice Tuesday. Then the team posted video of players swimming and diving — or at least leaping off diving boards — at nearby Loyola University. In one video posted by a reporter for the team's website, Phelps let everyone else have a significant head start before diving in and racing them. At least some of them did beat him to the end. Phelps also toured the smaller pools at the Ravens' facility, and he spoke to the team on the practice field along with former Ravens star Ray Lewis. 'I'm not going to say I'm a big swimming fan, but I know Michael Phelps,' defensive coordinator Zach Orr said. 'I think it was neat having him and Ray come talk to us, because the message was the same. That's one thing you notice when you listen to the greats. When you study the greats, you wonder, 'How do they do such great things in the highest tense moments?' And it all leads back to the work that nobody sees, and that's what Michael Phelps talked about. Ray talked about preparation. Michael Phelps talked about preparation as well.' ___ AP NFL:

WATCH: Ray Lewis, Michael Phelps delivery strong words of motivation to the Ravens

Olympic champion Michael Phelps and Super Bowl legend Ray Lewis addressed the Ravens and spoke to the team following Tuesday's practice The Ravens had champions in the building on Tuesday, as Michael Phelps and franchise legend Ray Lewis visited with the team at the Under Armour Performance Center. Phelps was initially invited to provide swim lessons to key Ravens, and following Tuesday's practice, both champions gave the team urgent words of wisdom. The two local heroes also signed autographs for fans after the team's practice. With 28 Olympic medals, including 23 golds, Phelps knows what it takes to become a champion. Lewis is the only player in NFL history with at least 40 career sacks and 30 career interceptions (41.5 sacks and 31 interceptions). In 17 seasons, Lewis made the all-decade team (2000s), made 12 Pro Bowls, and set a franchise record 2,643 career tackles, including a single-season team-best 225 stops in 2003.
