McGoldrick is 'Superman' - Notts County boss Maynard

BBC News12-03-2025
Notts County boss Stuart Maynard called veteran forward David McGoldrick "Superman" after the fit-again striker came off the bench to seal Tuesday's win at Grimsby Town and maintain the Magpies' push for automatic promotion from League Two.The 37-year-old made his first appearance for nearly six weeks after recovering from injury and scored a cracking goal from outside the box to wrap up Notts' 2-0 victory at Blundell Park after Alassana Jatta had poked them ahead on 56 minutes."He's Superman, isn't he?" Maynard told BBC Radio Nottingham. "He comes along, he delivers, he just produces things on a football pitch that other people can't."I was screaming from the side as he was running through, 'square it to AJ' [Jatta], but he touches it wider, he knows where he's going, he reverses it across goal, what a finish - incredible."The victory kept Maynard's side hot on the heels of Doncaster Rovers, who are in the third automatic promotion place, with the Magpies just a point behind going into the last 10 games.
Although McGoldrick has missed the past seven games, his goal - a sixth in his last six appearances -took his tally to 14 for the season. His latest goal triggered emotional celebrations on the Notts bench between the medical team and the players in a show of unity in what has been a testing season with injuries.Lewis Macari, Lucas Ness and Scott Robertson are all out for the rest of the campaign, winger Jodi Jones is still not fit while midfielders Connor Grant and Curtis Edwards - and now McGoldrick - have only just returned."When Didzy [McGoldrick] is in, even just on the bench, it gives all the young lads on the pitch a real lift, and that's what he's done," Maynard said."I think when you go through little blips in seasons, I think we all stick together as a staff. There's nothing that the medical team could have done about any of our injuries. So we've been very unfortunate this year."We work incredibly hard and the medical team are working around the clock 24/7 - they're in on Sundays - trying everything to get the lads back as quick as possible."They're playing a huge part in the success that we've had this season - the medical team have been incredible."

Alan Shearer reveals Alexander Isak meeting as U-turn leaves him with Newcastle theory

Alan Shearer has revealed what he took away from meeting Alexander Isak several months ago prior to the striker's ongoing stand-off with Newcastle over a transfer move away Alan Shearer suspects a major disagreement has unfolded behind the scenes for Alexander Isak to force a move away from Newcastle. Isak is currently in the midst of a stand-off with Newcastle as he tries to orchestrate a transfer from the club he joined three years ago and won the Carabao Cup with last season. ‌ The 25-year-old was not involved in the team's pre-season training camp and tour of Asia due to the uncertainty about his future. After expressing his wish to leave Newcastle, the striker was the subject of a £110million bid from Liverpool earlier this month, which the north east club immediately turned down. ‌ He has since been training on his own and missed the Magpies' Premier League opener against Aston Villa, which ended in a goalless draw despite Villa being down to 10 men. The club's hierarchy maintain they will only let their star player go if another club meets their valuation of him, believed to be around £150m, given that he is contracted until 2028. ‌ Newcastle icon Shearer discussed the summer's biggest transfer saga in the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, with the situation expected to continue on until the window shuts on September 1. The legendary striker revealed he had a detailed conversation with Isak earlier this year. At that time, he didn't sense any desire from the player to leave - leading him to believe something has seriously upset the Swedish international since then. Shearer recalled: 'I sat down with him five or six months ago and I didn't see this in him, to be honest. I thought he was a manager's dream the way he spoke about his life and was talking about the club. So obviously, something has massively upset him and we don't know what. That led Gary Lineker to theorise: 'These things are always behind closed doors so there could have been a point maybe a year ago where they said, 'If you have another great season we'll give you a big bonus, redo your contract', and then it didn't transpire. I don't know, but I suppose we'll find out at some point.' The episode was filmed before but released after Isak dropped a bombshell statement on Tuesday night, breaking his silence on the matter. On the night, Isak had failed to attend the Professional Footballers' Association awards gala, where he was named in the Premier League team of the season. ‌ The Swede took to Instagram to post a statement explaining why, indicating that he will not play for Newcastle again. He seemingly confirmed Shearer's suspicions by saying "promises have been broken" and "trust has been lost" between the club and player. Isak wrote: "I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. "The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. ‌ "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now - and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself." Newcastle swiftly responded to his comments with their own statement, stating: 'We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening. We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer. ‌ 'We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met. 'This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.' There is some speculation as to how the relationship has soured. Reports suggest the Newcastle striker was promised a mammoth new contract by Amanda Staveley, but Staveley and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi sold their stake in the club to the Saudi Public Investment Fund in July 2024. ‌ It is claimed Paul Mitchell, who later joined as the club's sporting director, immediately cancelled talks with the player, believing the three years left on his contract meant he didn't need a new one. Another theory is that Isak has been let down by the club's direction and lack of ambition. It has undoubtedly been a disappointing summer recruitment-wise for Eddie Howe, having missed out on a number of top targets, when Isak would have wanted to see the club invest in new players to match his ambition of competing for elite trophies.

Virgil van Dijk sends message to Alexander Isak after explosive Liverpool transfer statement

Virgil van Dijk has hailed Alexander Isak as one of the toughest forwards to face in the Premier League as the Newcastle forward continues to push for a move to Liverpool Virgil van Dijk insists Alexander Isak is one of the toughest opponents to come up against as Liverpool continue to eye the Newcastle frontman - who has given an explosive statement on his situation. ‌ The Swede is looking to force his exit from St. James' Park and has made it clear he won't play for the club again. That would be a major blow for the Magpies with Isak crucial to their recent success. ‌ He scored against Van Dijk and Liverpool as Newcastle claimed Carabao Cup success last year - their first domestic trophy in 70 years. Isak also notched in a Premier League draw with the Reds, meaning he has found the net four times against the Merseysiders in six outings. ‌ And that quality has not gone unnoticed by Van Dijk, who was quizzed on the most difficult strikers he's had to combat in the Premier League. Whether he was giving Isak a deliberate compliment or not is unclear, but he put the Swede in the top bracket. He told Cecil Thomas on a TikTok live stream: "[Erling] Haaland, Isak, [Ollie] Watkins, Harry Kane. Speaking about the last couple of years in the Premier League, there are plenty. Everybody has a different challenge so I respect everyone playing in the Premier League because it's the hardest league in the world." Isak was not present at the PFA Awards in Manchester, but was named in the Premier League Team of the Year, as voted for by his fellow peers after a stellar season for Newcastle. Only Mohamed Salah outscored him, but the Swede took Tuesday night as the opportunity to break his silence. The striker said: "I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors." Newcastle have already rejected a bid from Liverpool in the region of £110million and are demanding a far higher fee. That said they've maintained their star man won't be sold. Isak is thought to be angered after a promise to look at his contract was u-turned on and now he's demanding that he's allowed to leave. He claimed: "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.' Newcastle statement in full as Premier League side fiercely respond to Alexander Isak's bombshell transfer statement

NEWCASTLE issued a statement responding to Alexander Isak's bombshell post on social media. The striker skipped the PFA Awards in Manchester last night and instead rocked the boat with his claims on Instagram. Isak, 25, claimed that the Magpies had broken promises and that it would be "better that he left". However, Newcastle issued their own statement in response, in which they insist that the conditions for Isak to leave were not met. It read: "We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening. "We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer. "We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. "As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. "We do not foresee those conditions being met. "This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. "Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates." The drama has unfolded amid Isak's wishes to join Premier League rivals Liverpool. 'That bothers me' - Jamie Carragher tells Liverpool NOT to sign £150million Alexander Isak from Newcastle The Reds have already made an offer worth £110million but it was rejected. Sun Sport has exclusively revealed that they are set to return with a new and improved bid. Liverpool have sanctioned a new British-record £130m offer for Isak in order to try and bring the saga to an end. It is understood that Isak's incredible swipe is because of a promise of a pay rise — by the club's former co-owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi — failing to materialise. Isak's statement in full Alexander Isak shocked fans with a statement on social media claiming that promises had been broken by Newcastle... He wrote: "I'm proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the season for 2024-25. "First and foremost, I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way. "I'm not at the ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn't feel right to be there. "I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. "The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. "To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. "That's where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself." One of the first decisions from ex-sporting director Paul Mitchell was to postpone negotiations due to Isak's contract, worth £130,000 a week, having four years to run. Despite Mitchell's departure and Newcastle's willingness to smash their £150,000-a-week pay ceiling to make him the best-paid player in their history, the player's relationship with the club appears completely broken. But Newcastle's reaction to the social media post appears to DENY anything ever being promised to the Swede. The club had repeatedly insisted that Isak will not be allowed to leave until a replacement is signed. But having been rejected by the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike and Bryan Mbeumo, their options are slim pickings. Newcastle have since been linked with Brentford's Yoane Wissa as well as Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves. 2
