Notts County boss Stuart Maynard called veteran forward David McGoldrick "Superman" after the fit-again striker came off the bench to seal Tuesday's win at Grimsby Town and maintain the Magpies' push for automatic promotion from League Two.The 37-year-old made his first appearance for nearly six weeks after recovering from injury and scored a cracking goal from outside the box to wrap up Notts' 2-0 victory at Blundell Park after Alassana Jatta had poked them ahead on 56 minutes."He's Superman, isn't he?" Maynard told BBC Radio Nottingham. "He comes along, he delivers, he just produces things on a football pitch that other people can't."I was screaming from the side as he was running through, 'square it to AJ' [Jatta], but he touches it wider, he knows where he's going, he reverses it across goal, what a finish - incredible."The victory kept Maynard's side hot on the heels of Doncaster Rovers, who are in the third automatic promotion place, with the Magpies just a point behind going into the last 10 games.
Although McGoldrick has missed the past seven games, his goal - a sixth in his last six appearances -took his tally to 14 for the season.His latest goal triggered emotional celebrations on the Notts bench between the medical team and the players in a show of unity in what has been a testing season with injuries.Lewis Macari, Lucas Ness and Scott Robertson are all out for the rest of the campaign, winger Jodi Jones is still not fit while midfielders Connor Grant and Curtis Edwards - and now McGoldrick - have only just returned."When Didzy [McGoldrick] is in, even just on the bench, it gives all the young lads on the pitch a real lift, and that's what he's done," Maynard said."I think when you go through little blips in seasons, I think we all stick together as a staff. There's nothing that the medical team could have done about any of our injuries. So we've been very unfortunate this year."We work incredibly hard and the medical team are working around the clock 24/7 - they're in on Sundays - trying everything to get the lads back as quick as possible."They're playing a huge part in the success that we've had this season - the medical team have been incredible."

Newcastle United are looking to make a significant number of signings this summer, currently in talks to buy Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Burnley stars. The Magpies have been quiet in recent transfer windows, but after winning the Carabao Cup and earning themselves a return to the Champions League they are making moves again. Eddie Howe is hoping to strengthen a string of positions, with the forward line particularly being looked at. The left flank is covered as Howe has Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes at his disposal, but he wants competition for Alexander Isak through the middle and for Jacob Murphy on the right. The Daily Mail report that the Magpies are 'pursuing a deal' for Forest winger Anthony Elanga after an impressive season for the Sweden international. Still just 23 years old, Elanga scored six goals in 43 appearances in all competitions for Forest as they enjoyed a surprisingly good season competing in the top half of the Premier League. The Telegraph report that Newcastle are 'aware of a price for Elanga' but there has been little movement yet on a possible move. The Swede only cost Forest £15m when he joined from Manchester United in 2023, but they would likely be looking for over £50m to sell him now. Speaking to Swedish media over the international break, Elanga said: 'There is a lot of talk. 'I focus on what I can do and my focus today was on the match. In football there are always rumours. Newcastle ready to kickstart summer window with bid for £30m Premier League star
Newcastle United are keen to reinforce their squad for the 2025/26 campaign after securing Champions League football and Eddie Howe has identified a goalkeeper he wants to sign Newcastle have reportedly entered negotiations with Burnley over the signing of James Trafford. The Magpies have made a quiet start to the summer transfer window, with 18-year-old Antonio Cordero the only signing so far, but are ready to step things up. Newcastle will play in the Champions League next season and want to strengthen their squad following an encouraging campaign under Eddie Howe. The team finished fifth in the Premier League and won the Carabao Cup and Howe is keen to kick on in the 2025/26 season. Like other sides, they are restricted by the profit and sustainability rules and the free transfer of Cordero from Malaga is the only deal they have done in the first 10-day window before the Club World Cup. That is not for lack of trying, with Newcastle linked with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, Brighton striker Joao Pedro and Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga. None of those players will be the first major summer signing, though, with Sky Sports reporting that the Magpies are in talks with Burnley over Trafford. Howe wants the Clarets keeper to join and challenge Nick Pope for the No.1 spot next season. Talks are still ongoing, with Burnley's valuation of £30million too high for Newcastle, who are keen to negotiate it down. The 22-year-old still has two years left on his Burnley contract and is poised to be the side's first-choice keeper when they begin the 2025/26 season in the Premier League following promotion from the Championship. Trafford played 45 of Burnley's 46 Championship games last season, keeping a staggering 29 clean sheets while playing behind the league's best defence. Scott Parker's side conceded just 16 goals in 46 games and only finished second behind Leeds on goal difference. Unlike Pope, Trafford is currently away with England, having been picked by Thomas Tuchel alongside first-choice keeper Jordan Pickford and Crystal Palace 's Dean Henderson. HAVE YOUR SAY! But of course, as we've said many times, the ability financially to compete the last few years has been hampered by PSR, but those issues aren't there for the coming window. So I don't see any reason why we can't strengthen, not weaken ourselves. 'From my perspective, and I'm not in control of the finances, it all depends on the individual case. There in not a blanket, 'No, we're not going to break that'. Or, 'Yes, we are'. It depends on the individual and if the individual is worth doing that with, then I think you need to consider it and maybe implement it. 'But you have to be aware that every decision you make has a consequence. So, obviously, you have to think that through carefully.'
