Feds Investigating 1.2 Million Ram Trucks That Might Roll Away Despite Past Recall
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched a new probe into an estimated 1,187,232 Ram trucks that might be at risk of rolling away. As the federal agency's Office of Defects Investigation explains, the concern is with a post-recall remedy on certain 2013-2018 model year Rams. These trucks previously had a 'fix' performed to address a brake transmission shift interlock problem, though as the NHTSA's open recall query states, that remedy may have failed.
And before you go pointing fingers at the maligned Ram transmission dial shifter, this specifically involves trucks with the column shifter. In these Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 models, the BTSI locking pin could get stuck, allowing the transmission to shift out of park without depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, they could be bumped out of park without the key in the ignition.
Ram previously issued recalls 17V-821 and 18V-100 to address these concerns, but the NHTSA has received 14 Vehicle Owner Questionnaire reports and 6 EWR Death & Injury reports related to trucks that had the recall remedy performed. There have been seven reported injuries from six incidents, but no fatalities. Still, that's more than enough to prompt action.
The Drive reached out to Ram for comment on the feds' open query, to which a spokesperson responded, 'We're cooperating with NHTSA.'
You don't need me to tell you why a 6,000-pound truck—or, heck, even a 9,000-pound dually—might be dangerous in a downhill runaway scenario. It's doubly concerning if it can occur without the vehicle's engine on, as its power brakes won't function properly. Here's hoping they get the issue fixed for real this time.
This news also comes less than a week after the NHTSA launched a similar probe into a post-recall remedy on Dodge Darts. Those cars are supposedly still having problems with rolling away, too, though it's not a BTSI problem; it's an alleged shifter bushing failure issue. It seems like Stellantis just can't catch a break.

He Claims He's the ‘Sports Betting King.' What Are the Odds?
Mazi VS — 'Mazi' as in Maserati, 'VS' as in the grade of diamond — pulled up outside my hotel in Las Vegas behind the wheel of a red Lamborghini Aventador and suggested that we go for a drive. A thing no one tells you about traveling via Lamborghini: Getting into your seat is like spelunking into a crevasse, and getting out is like climbing out of a coffin. Lambos also were not put on this earth for lurching through rush-hour traffic, and so every time Mazi tapped the accelerator after a light turned green, the car's 6.5-liter V12 engine (behind us) snarled in my ears like a caged tiger. The Aventador has a top speed that exceeds 210 m.p.h., but it drops to 0.1 m.p.h. for speed bumps, and this car has a Blue Book value of more than $250,000. Imagine what it costs to fix a dent. Mazi seemed untroubled by the risk, though. He was accustomed to having six figures on the line. At that very moment, a Wednesday afternoon in mid-March, the day before the start of the first round of the N.C.A.A. men's basketball tournament, he had a total of $1.1 million riding on a three-leg parlay, a high-risk, high-reward sports wager that most pro gamblers tend to shun, not least because you must win all multiple individual bets to collect, while the house has to win only once. Later on, Mazi showed me the actual betting slips: $600,000 at Caesars Sportsbook and $500,000 at Circa on the same three-way outcome, wins for North Carolina, Purdue and Kentucky. All three were heavy favorites in their games, and all they had to do was win, not cover a point spread. But this was March Madness, when upsets happen all the time, and it would take only one to make Mazi $1.1 million poorer. He also stood to win just under $1.35 million, and Carolina had already done its job during a play-in game the night before. 'I got three teams that should be blowouts,' he said. 'So we lookin' good.' Mazi has 2.5 million followers on Instagram, his social media platform of choice, and a key ingredient in his mystique is that he is always somehow looking good, despite operating in a cutthroat, quasi-legal industry in which fates inevitably turn very bad. All the other suckers out there lose on a regular basis, but not Mazi, and he seems to have the betting slips — and the Lambos, the Maybachs, the private jets to Miami, the limited-edition Chrome Hearts jeans that can go for north of $10,000 and the $180,000 diamond chain by the jeweler to the stars Eliantte — that say so. Mazi has taken to calling himself the 'Sports Betting King,' or 'S.B.K.,' initials that are inked on his left hand. In a 2024 podcast, he claimed to have won $25 million the previous year alone. The most respected pros in this world build complex statistical models, scrutinizing micro-movements in betting lines, grinding out tiny advantages, winning pennies on the dollar, and in an excellent year they might get about 55 percent of their picks correct. Mazi claims his win rate sometimes reaches 70 percent, sometimes even higher. His process? Getting 'locked in' at the desk of his home office, then scanning the lines on his phone and picking the ones that look 'too good to be true.' 'Just literally in February we went on, like, an 18-1 run,' he told me as we inched along Las Vegas Boulevard so low to the ground that all I could see around us were the wheels of other cars. 'Right now we're on an 8-3 run.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Should You Buy Lucid Stock While It's Below $2.50?
Lucid Group stock is hovering at low levels. The electric vehicle maker is steadily working to expand its business. Lucid stock is only appropriate for risk-tolerant investors. 10 stocks we like better than Lucid Group › Lucid Group (NASDAQ: LCID) is a startup automaker attempting to take on industry giants. That's a tall order, and as such, most investors are probably better off watching this company from the sidelines. However, for more aggressive investors, the company's award-winning technology in what is still a relatively new electric vehicle (EV) niche could make it worth the risk, particularly while the stock is trading below $2.50 per share. Here's what you need to know. The first step for Lucid was to create an electric vehicle that customers would want to buy. It did that, and it has won industry accolades along the way. One of the biggest selling points for Lucid vehicles is the range that they offer -- concerns about being able to travel long distances are among the most notable worries for potential buyers of electric vehicles (EVs). The only problem is that having the best technology doesn't always lead to business success. The typewriter keyboard is a great example: Most still use the QWERTY configuration, despite the fact that more efficient keyboard configurations were developed -- they just never took off. The VCR versus Betamax battle was another example of the "best" technology not winning out. And Lucid, despite having great technology, is still losing money. Yes, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) attempted to do the same thing and succeeded. However, when Tesla did it, the competing legacy automakers weren't making many EVs. The field was wide open. Now, all of the major automakers are making EVs, and a host of other EV makers have debuted around the world. The playing field Lucid is trying to maneuver within is much more crowded. That said, if Lucid does manage to expand its footprint in the EV industry significantly, there would be material upside potential for the stock. Even if it never matches the gains achieved by Tesla, just half of those gains would still leave investors with huge returns if they buy Lucid now. But don't jump until you have a clear understanding of the risk. For example, Tesla sold around 337,000 EVs in the first quarter of 2025. Lucid delivered around 3,100 -- barely even a rounding error relative to Tesla's total. The contrast makes it crystal clear just how early Lucid is in its development. Moreover, that 3,100 figure was up by more than 50% from the roughly 2,000 vehicles it delivered in the first quarter of 2024. Of course, that growth in deliveries also shows the progress that Lucid has been making on the production front. So, too, does the $366 million it lost in the first quarter of 2025 -- as massive as that figure is, it was down sharply from the $681 million loss it booked in the same quarter a year earlier. And yet the red ink is still material, and highlights the risks investors must accept to own this stock. If you are a risk-averse investor, you should not buy Lucid Group stock right now, no matter what the price is. It is a high-risk upstart, and there's a very real chance that it will never scale up far enough to become sustainably profitable. However, Lucid is making slow and steady progress as a business. Given the capital-intensive nature of manufacturing, that is basically all one can expect. And yet, if it keeps making slow and steady progress, its chances of success increase. For risk-tolerant investors, it could be worth further research and potentially opening a position in Lucid now. Just go in knowing that a positive outcome is uncertain, and that even if it does achieve one, there are likely to be many more bumps along the way.
