Raewyn Lovett Appointed Inaugural Chair Of Selwyn Village Limited
The Selwyn Foundation has announced the appointment of respected governance leader Raewyn Lovett ONZM as the inaugural Chair of Selwyn Village Limited – a new entity being established to lead Selwyn Village operations.
Raewyn Lovett brings a wealth of experience in the retirement village and aged care sector, as well as commercial and not-for-profit governance. She is currently Chair of CHT Healthcare Trust and has been on the board CHT since 2013. She is currently Chair at Sport Zealand Ihi Aotearoa and High Performance Sport New Zealand Limited, and is Co-Chair of the International Working Group on Women and Sport. Outside of her governance roles, Raewyn specialises in commercial, corporate and property law at respected national firm Duncan Cotterill.

The appointment follows a governance review by The Selwyn Foundation Board to ensure strong, focused oversight of both its social impact and mission and the operations of Selwyn Village.
Selwyn Village Limited will take on full operational responsibility for Selwyn Village from 1 July 2025, with its own Board and Jason More, former Chief Operating Officer at The Selwyn Foundation, as Chief Executive. This change reflects The Foundation's commitment to strengthen both operational governance and its social impact and mission work among vulnerable older people.
Raewyn Lovett will be formally welcomed at a mihi whakatau at Selwyn Village on 24 June 2025.

Labour Leader Chris Hipkins Dismisses Criticism Of Covid-19 Overspending As 'Treasury Spin'
, Acting Political Editor Labour leader Chris Hipkins is dismissing what he calls "Treasury spin" after its analysts said the last government overspent during the Covid-19 pandemic against official advice. Treasury's 2025 Long Term Insights Briefing, released this week, calculated the total cost of the pandemic at about $66 billion, or roughly 20.4 percent of GDP. The report said Treasury advocated for more targeted support in late 2020 into 2021 and explicitly warned "against any further stimulus" by Budget 2022. But responding to questions from RNZ on Friday, Hipkins was unapologetic about his party's economic response to Covid-19. "We prioritised keeping people alive and keeping people in jobs," he said. "I'm never going to claim that we got everything perfect... but prioritising jobs and prioritising lives was the right thing to do." Hipkins claimed other countries also spent up large with the same objectives, but Treasury said New Zealand was near the top of the chart when considering spending as a percentage of GDP. "If you listen to the Treasury spin, then you're going to get one view," Hipkins told RNZ. "If you speak to other economists, you'll get a different view. "Our job was to support New Zealanders through the global pandemic, making sure that we saved lives and kept people's jobs, and we were very successful in doing that: one of the lowest death rates in the world, one of the lowest rates of unemployment in the world, and one of the fastest rates of economic growth in the world." About half of the total Covid-19 response cost was directly tied to the pandemic, such as the wage subsidy scheme, or health initiatives like vaccination, contact tracing and quarantine. The remainder went to a wide range of initiatives like: "tax changes, training schemes, housing construction, shovel-ready infrastructure projects, increases to welfare benefits, the Small Business Cashflow Scheme, Jobs for Nature, additional public housing places and school lunches". Treasury said that had "a lagged impact on the economy and proved difficult to unwind in later years". But Hipkins said Treasury had mischaracterised some of that spending, such as the provision of distance-learning for school students. "Making sure that kids could keep learning while they were at home during lockdown was an essential Covid-19 expense," Hipkins said. The report comes during a prolonged economic downturn, with both the government and opposition parties trading blame over its cause. Finance Minister Nicola Willis was quick on Thursday to wield Treasury's findings as evidence that Labour had been undisciplined in its spending, driving up inflation, and fuelling a cost-of-living crisis. "Treasury's language is spare and polite, but its conclusions are damning," she said. "New Zealanders are still paying the price of the previous government extending a big-spending approach initially intended for a pandemic response. "The lesson from Labour's mishandling of the Covid response is that while there are times when governments have to increase spending in response to major events the fiscal guardrails should be restored as soon as possible." To that, Hipkins scoffed: "By comparison to this government's track record, I'll take our one any day". Hipkins said Willis should stop blaming others and instead accept the consequences of her government's spending cuts. "The wreckage that she is leaving in her wake at the moment is obvious for all New Zealanders to see. Unemployment is going up," he said. "Economic growth has collapsed. Essential services that the public rely on a daily basis are falling into disarray, and this is all on Nicola Willis' watch."

Two New Seasonal Work Visas To Grow Economy
Minister of Immigration The Government is introducing two new seasonal visa pathways to help New Zealand businesses access the workers they need during peak periods, while also prioritising jobs for New Zealanders. 'We know the success of our seasonal industries is critical to growing the economy. These new visas will make it easier for employers to bring back experienced seasonal workers and to fill short-term roles that are hard to fully staff locally,' Immigration Minister Erica Stanford says. 'We are making sure businesses can access the right people at the right time, while also protecting opportunities for Kiwis.' The Global Workforce Seasonal Visa (GWSV) is an up to three-year visa for highly experienced seasonal workers in roles such as rural contracting, sheep scanning, winemaking, and snow instruction. It enables skilled workers to return for subsequent seasons on the same visa. Visa holders will need to spend a minimum of three months out of every 12 months offshore before returning to New Zealand. The Peak Seasonal Visa (PSV) is a visa of up to seven months for short-term seasonal roles such as meat and seafood processing, calf-rearing, and wool handling. Visa holders will have to have at least one season of previous relevant experience and people will need to leave New Zealand for at least four months before the visa can be renewed. For visa over three months there will be a new requirement for insurance with health coverage. Employers will be required to advertise these roles, as well as engage with MSD, to ensure that New Zealand workers continue to be prioritised. 'These visas are designed to reflect the realities of seasonal work and the diverse range of skill levels involved. They'll help fill critical roles in industries where employers struggle to find enough New Zealand workers at peak times. From ski instructors guiding first-timers down the slopes to wine makers helping create next year's vintage, these visas are designed to keep seasonal industries humming.' 'These changes are part of our plan to deliver smart, flexible and nuanced immigration solutions to help grow our economy,' Ms Stanford says. Notes: Both visa pathways will open for applications on 8 December 2025 as subsets of the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) and will complement the existing Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme, which will continue unchanged. The visas are only available for specified seasonal roles, listed on the Immigration New Zealand website The new visas will replace the interim seasonal Specific Purpose Work Visa (SPWV), which was introduced in 2024 as a short-term measure to meet seasonal workforce needs. The seasonal SPWV allowed stays of up to nine months and was always intended as a temporary solution.

Advocates urge New Zealand to adopt new endometriosis treatment guidelines
The current 2020 Ministry of Health document was no longer fit for purpose and needed to be urgently replaced with the new Australian Living Evidence Guideline, he said. 'Our current guideline is now outdated, and out of step with modern diagnostic and treatment practices. 'By contrast, RANZCOG's new guideline reflects the latest evidence and provides clear recommendations for early diagnosis, as well as first-line hormonal treatment to be run in parallel with diagnostic investigations. These are crucial to reducing the delays in diagnosis and treatment that too many patients still experience.' Endometriosis New Zealand chief executive Tanya Cooke said adopting the new guideline would bring New Zealand into line with global best practice, and ensure patients received faster, less invasive and more equitable care. 'We have written to the ministry and [Health New Zealand] Te Whatu Ora, urging them to adopt the new guideline as soon as possible,' she said. 'It's also really important that they work with RANZCOG and others to support application of it across the sector, and for the benefit of the 120,000 New Zealanders living with endometriosis.' Officials respond The Health Ministry said in a statement it was 'grateful for the important work that RANZCOG has undertaken in developing these guidelines to support clinical care in this important aspect of women's health'. 'These guidelines represent a valuable resource, informing clinicians of evidence regarding diagnosis, management and care of people living with endometriosis. 'Health New Zealand has established processes, through clinical networks and health pathways, to consider clinical guidelines and how they might influence on clinical service delivery to achieve better outcomes for New Zealanders.' Health NZ national chief medical officer Professor Dame Helen Stokes-Lampard said clinical guidelines and health pathways were reviewed regularly. 'Our immediate focus is on urgent patients and those who have been waiting the longest for treatment,' she said. 'We continue to work hard to put in place systems and processes, so improvements to waiting times are made.' – RNZ
