Mum dumped baby's body in bag behind sofa after deceiving partner, court hears
A court has heard how a woman hid the body of her own baby behind the sofa, after cruelly deceiving her partner. During sentencing on Friday (August 1), Monique Ellen Burton was handed a 19-month suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to one count of interfering with a corpse.
The 35-year-old West Australian mum, who appeared before Perth District Court, concealed her pregnancy from Shaun Balaam, her partner of 14 years. When Balaam, who was not the child's biological father, quizzed her about whether or not she was pregnant, Burton insisted that she appeared bloated, as she was suffering from liver cirrhosis. It comes after a woman, 20, was found dead on bus with 26 iPhones glued to her body.
News.com.au reports that, on the evening of August 19, 2022, after Balaam had gone to sleep, Burton gave birth to a boy on the bathroom floor of her Geraldton home. After wrapping up the newborn in clothing and placing him in a plastic bag, Burton hid him behind the couch in the lounge.
As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, a post-mortem examination could not determine if the baby had been stillborn. However, Burton stated that this had been the case, with Judge Darren Renton noting: "You said there was no noise from the baby and he looked like a doll."
The judge also remarked that Burton's interference with the body was 'naive' and not intended to be permanent, describing it as 'an 'out of sight, out of mind' act.' The morning after Burton gave birth in secret, Balaam discovered Burton on the sofa with blood on her legs. She told him she was feeling nauseous and unwell, but still continued to deny that she'd been pregnant even after being taken to the hospital.
Later that same day, Balaam returned home and began searching for a phone belonging to his mum, who'd been caring for their children at the house. It was then that he came across a black plastic bag, hidden behind the couch.
Although he couldn't see what was inside, Balaam did feel a heavy, hard lump, which he suspected could have been a baby's head, given Burton's history of hiding her pregnancies. The court heard how Balaan didn't check whether or not there was a baby inside the bag, and instead wrapped it in another bag, which he placed in the freezer.
Eventually, after medical tests indicated that she had indeed recently given birth, Burton confessed to hospital staff, admitting: 'I don't know what is wrong with me". On August 25, 2022, the child, referred to only as 'Baby Burton', was found in a chest freezer on the back veranda of Burton's home.
Balaam told officers that he hadn't known what was in the bag or checked inside, and had freaked out at the possibility that it could be a baby. He explained that he'd put the bag in the freezer, as this is what would have been done at a morgue.
After being arrested and interviewed, Burton told officers that her memory was "really fuzzy" and that she'd disassociated. Judge Renton said: "This is a tragic case on numerous levels." Taking into account Burton's depressive episodes since the tragic death of her 15-month-old son two years before, from medical complications, Judge Renton conceded that her criminal culpability was 'the lower end' of the scale, while asserting that her actions 'involved a degree of indignity towards Baby Burton'.
The judge remarked that the fact that Balaam was not the child's biological father could have partly explained Burton's actions. However, she had denied that this was the reason why she kept her pregnancy a secret.
Although he had some misgivings about Burton's credibility, as per ABC News Australia, Judge Renton told the court that "it seems likely that baby Burton was stillborn". It was also noted that Burton, who has expressed remorse for her actions, had hidden two prior pregnancies, with one child passing away at a young age.
On top of the aforementioned guilty plea, Burton also pleaded guilty to multiple charges of fraud related to a GoFundMe campaign. This page, which was set up by a friend who'd been informed that Burton was terminally ill, had raised more than $3,000 AUD.
Although Burton, who has an "adjustment disorder", had not started the campaign herself, it's understood that she had been aware that her friend intended to do so. As well as a 19-month prison term suspended for 12 months, Burton is also required to undergo a treatment program focused on personal development, psychiatric needs, and parenting. Last year, Balaam was sentenced to a 12-month community-based order over his charges.

How can a sex offender still be a New South Wales MP?
Notoriously, the Australian state of New South Wales was founded as a penal colony. Since it was granted responsible government by Britain nearly 200 years ago, more than a few of the state's MPs have gone from parliament to prison. Not all that long ago, the New South Wales corrective services minister was convicted of taking bribes to grant certain prisoners early release, and saw the inside of prisons he once administered. But that former minister's disgrace is almost nothing compared to the case of the former minister and serving MP for the pretty coastal town of Kiama, Gareth Ward. This week, Ward was convicted of the sexual assault of two men in 2013 and 2015. Ward himself had been a magnet for trouble ever since he was first elected in 2011, and was at the centre of several other scandalous incidents involving inappropriate encounters with young men. The wheels of justice in Ward's case spun slowly. Charges were laid and Ward committed for trial in 2022. When he was charged, the then conservative government, of which was a member, moved to suspend him from parliament, and that was done by a unanimous parliamentary vote. An honourable person would have taken the hint and resigned, but Ward was not honourable and refused to quit, citing his popularity in his own constituency. And inexplicably popular he was. Despite having been expelled from his Liberal party, and despite the grave criminal charges hanging over him, Ward held his Kiama seat in New South Wales's 2023 general election, even as his former party was defeated. He therefore stood trial as a suspended but serving MP, and as a serving MP he now sits in a Sydney jail cell, awaiting sentence. That appointment with the judge is still some months away. Both the state's Labor premier, Chris Minns, and Liberal opposition leader, Mark Speakman, have demanded Ward resign in disgrace and, failing that, want the New South Wales parliament to expel him. So far, Ward has refused to quit, and this week his lawyers obtained a Supreme Court injunction preventing the government from initiating an expulsion process, at least until Thursday when the court will hear Ward's application. From that same Thursday, however, the parliament is in recess and doesn't resume until next month. Effectively, convicted sex offender Ward keeps his parliamentary seat until further notice and, more importantly for him, clings to his parliamentary salary. It gets even murkier. Ward is appealing his conviction, and that could take a year or longer. In Britain, under the Representation of the People Act, any MP detained for more than a year automatically loses his seat. The New South Wales constitution, however, provides an MP's seat can be declared vacant 'if he is convicted of an infamous crime, or by an offence punishable by a term of imprisonment for life or for a term of five years or more'. But the constitution also implies such a conviction is not deemed in effect until any appeal is dismissed. The state's parliament can still expel Ward, but effectively it has to legislate to blast him out. So desperate are both premier and opposition leader to do this that they are seriously considering calling back a quorum of MPs during the recess to pass the necessary resolutions. The New South Wales government and parliament being mocked and humiliated by a convicted sex offender is bad enough. Worse, this costly legal farce, being played out at the expense of the state's taxpayers, prolongs the already drawn-out ordeals of Ward's victims, and of any others who may have suffered sexual abuse at his hands. This is outrageous and unconscionable, and it must stop. If he has any shred of remaining decency Gareth Ward should do the right thing and resign immediately. That he has not and will not, in his perverse determination to exploit the state's constitutional loopholes and hold out against all political and legal pressure to remove him, is not just a humiliating political embarrassment for the parliament in which he disgracefully remains a member, it is a grave moral shame. This institutional failure won't soon be forgotten.

Locals say the clip was then shared on the street's WhatsApp group and more footage from the night was revealed, which was posted on Facebook and has now gone viral. People were quick to slam his behaviour, with one commenting: "Special kind of stupid right there." A second agreed, describing the act as "brainless", while a third added: "Some people just have NO common sense." Another suggested: "My guess is he thinks he was doing a good thing by removing them and gave no thought to the damage or danger. Some people just have NO common sense." And one person stated: "Ban him from all National Parks for life. He can't read or follow directions and obviously has no regard for the importance and fragility of the area." Viktor Pyshniuk, 21, was sentenced to a week in jail and banned from the park for two years after a park employee saw him walk off a path near Steamboat Geyser. It is the world's tallest active geyser and known for its major eruptions, which can shoot hot water over 300 feet (91 meters) into the air. At Yellowstone, there are more than 15 miles of boardwalks to protect both the environment and tourists there to see the park's thermal features, such as geysers, hot springs and mudpots. These thermal features are unpredictable and can be dangerous, causing more injuries and deaths than encounters with wildlife.
