
US' Huntsman launches fire-resistant coating for EV batteries
Huntsman, one of the leading global companies in polyurethane-based solutions, has launched a new intumescent polyurethane coating system developed for automotive applications, which can provide passive fire protection to metal and composite substrates used in electric vehicles (EVs) – without compromising design flexibility. POLYRESYST EV5005 polyurethane coating system has been developed to help protect structural integrity and improve fire protection in battery cells – a key challenge in the automotive industry.
Huntsman has launched POLYRESYST EV5005, a new intumescent polyurethane coating for EVs, offering passive fire protection without design compromise. Fast-curing and spray-applied, it enhances battery safety and structural integrity. The system will debut at The Battery Show Europe, alongside Huntsman's full range of polyurethane solutions for EV batteries.
The launch of the new coating technology coincides with EV manufacturers intensifying their efforts to enhance fire safety – driven by regulatory changes, technological advancements and heightened consumer awareness. The new system will be unveiled at The Battery Show Europe in June and promoted alongside Huntsman's wider portfolio of polyurethane systems for EV manufacturers.
Other technologies in the spotlight in Stuttgart will include Huntsman's SHOKLESSTM battery encapsulation foam systems and its VITROX WCM and RTM systems for creating lightweight upper battery casing covers.

POLYRESYST EV5005 polyurethane system has been developed to be spray applied without any thickness constraints to help meet the fire standards needed. The material is fast curing and has high mechanical strength with hydrolytic stability and abrasion resistance – delivering a tough yet flexible layer that can help improve the structural integrity of core components in the event of impact or a thermal event.
Developed for use on automated manufacturing lines, POLYRESYST EV5005 system can also help manufacturers save time and money. The technology adheres well to different substrates and is fast setting, hardening in seconds, without the need for oven or post curing. A short tack-free time also means additional coats can be built up quickly as required and the sprayed substrates can be moved quickly after coating.

SHOKLESSTM polyurethane systems – a family of low to high density foam systems providing a lightweight solution for the encapsulation of EV batteries. Huntsman's SHOKLESS™ technology can help with creating potting foams and encapsulants that are mechanically strong and have the thermal insulation and vibration dampening properties needed to protect batteries at module and pack level. This solution can be used via common polyurethane dispensing processes or prefabricated and has been developed to offer a wide processing window for extra handling flexibility.
Huntsman's VITROX technologies span a range of polyurethane systems that can help with creating lightweight battery casing covers with very good thermal resistance. Mechanically stable, these products can help improve thermal barrier and thermal runaway protection.
RIMLINE FC polyurethane system – a moldable, tunable foam core technology for lightweight, durable, composite sandwich applications in electric vehicles. Recently recognized by a leading global OEM as a technology of choice, this material can help with creating composite sandwich battery enclosures. New Delhi: Errol Musk, father of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, on Monday said he has no doubt that there will be a Tesla manufacturing plant in India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his son will work something out that is beneficial to both. Speaking to IANS in the national capital, Errol Musk, who is currently visiting India, said Prime Minister Modi has to look at the interests of India when it comes to bringing Tesla to the country. "And Elon has to look at the interests of Tesla as a company. So, between them, they will work something out that is to the best advantage of Tesla as well as India. However, I'm saying this as a private individual because Tesla is a public company," the 79-year-old South African businessman emphasised. Errol Musk further stated that "I have no doubt that there will be a Tesla manufacturing plant in India". "There has to be (a Tesla plant in India). India is one of the most important places in the world," he told IANS. The India visit of Errol Musk, Global Advisor to homegrown Servotech Renewable Power System Ltd, underscores the growing interest in the country's rapid strides towards sustainable development and its ambition to be a leader in the green and electric technology. India has set ambitious targets for EV adoption. It aims to achieve 30 per cent EV penetration in the passenger vehicle segment, 80 per cent in the combined two-wheeler and three-wheeler segment, and 70 per cent in the commercial vehicle segment by 2030. In April this year, Elon Musk and PM Modi discussed various issues, including an immense potential for collaboration in the areas of technology and innovation. 'It was an honour to speak with PM Modi. I am looking forward to visiting India later this year,' Musk posted on his X social media platform. PM Modi held a discussion with Tesla CEO on a range of topics. "Spoke to Elon Musk and talked about various issues, including the topics we covered during our meeting in Washington DC earlier this year. We discussed the immense potential for collaboration in the areas of technology and innovation. India remains committed to advancing our partnerships with the US in these domains," the Prime Minister said on X. Meanwhile, Union Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy said on Monday that Mercedes Benz, Skoda-Volkswagen (VW), Hyundai, and Kia have shown keen interest in manufacturing their electric vehicles (EVs) in India. On Elon Musk-run Tesla, the Union Minister said: "We are not actually expecting (manufacturing) from them as they are only to start showrooms. They are currently not interested in manufacturing in India."

Elon Musk's Tesla not keen on making in India under EV incentive plan: Minister
New Delhi: American billionaire Elon Musk's Tesla Inc has not shown interest in making in India under the government's scheme to promote the manufacturing of electric passenger cars in India (SPMEPCI), Union minister of heavy industries and steel H.D. Kumaraswamy said on Monday. However, other foreign automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, Skoda-Volkswagen, Hyundai and Kia have expressed interest in making electric vehicles (EV) in India, Kumaraswamy said at a press conference in New Delhi. The minister said these automakers are in discussions with their global parent companies about investing in India's EV manufacturing drive. Announced in March 2024, the SPMEPCI scheme aimed to attract foreign EV makers to set up manufacturing units in India, by reducing the customs duty on completely built-up (CBU) units worth at least $35,000 to 15% from 70%. Also read: E-buses under PM E-drive to be used now for intercity, tourist travel As per the scheme notification, automakers need to invest $500 million, or approximately ₹4,150 crore, in setting up a manufacturing unit in India, to be eligible to import their vehicles at the lower customs duty. New guidelines announced by Kumaraswamy on Monday allows companies to invest in charging infrastructure as well as research and development as a part of the total ₹4,150 crore investment under the scheme to promote manufacturing of electric passenger cars in India. Foreign electric vehicle makers can invest up to 5% of their total investment in electric vehicle charging infrastructure, the minister said. Mint first reported on 20 February that the government was considering a plan to include EV charging infrastructure investments under the overall ₹4,150 crore investment requirement for the scheme. Additionally, investments made towards research and development will also be included under the scheme. Companies that already have plants in India can add a separate manufacturing line for electric vehicles to meet the investment criteria of the scheme, senior government officials told reporters on the sidelines of the press conference. Officials also said dual-use facilities, such as one painting facility used to paint both electric and non-electric vehicles, would be included as investment under the scheme. The aim of the scheme is to increase manufacturing capacity for electric vehicles in India by introducing foreign automakers to Indian markets. Bank guarantees worth ₹4,150 crore made under the scheme will be invoked if manufacturers are unable to roll out electric cars within three years, the minister clarified on Monday. The ministry will also notify a revenue target for the automakers who wish to make EVs in India, he said, adding that the portal to apply for the scheme's benefits will open shortly. 'This landmark initiative aligns with India's national goals of achieving Net Zero by 2070, fostering sustainable mobility, driving economic growth, and reducing environmental impact. It is designed to firmly establish India as a premier global destination for automotive manufacturing and innovation," the minister said. Mint reported earlier that the government was open to tweaking the scheme after India had completed negotiating foreign bilateral trade agreements. This had also prompted automakers to shift their attention towards these bilateral agreements, namely the India-US BTA, India-UK FTA and the India-EU FTA, according to a Mint report on 7 May. The rollout of the scheme comes at a time when India's EV import landscape is undergoing rapid change, said Ajay Srivastava, co-founder, Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), a trade policy think tank. "The India-UK free trade agreement, already in force, is set to reduce import duties on premium UK-made electric vehicles from over 100% to just 10% over the next few years. Future FTAs with the US and the European Union are also expected to bring similar market access concessions, adding competitive pressure on Indian manufacturers," he said. According to GTRI, any serious investment in India's EV ecosystem must now take into account not just domestic incentives but also the broader impact of India's trade agreements, which are likely to reshape the competitive contours of the sector for years to come. Under the scheme, automakers also have to comply with stringent localization guidelines by achieving 25% domestic value addition in the first three years of operations, and 50% in the first five. It sends a strong signal of intent from the government to support the EV transition, not just through incentives for end-users, but also by creating a more favourable environment for manufacturing and infrastructure development," said Dhiraj Agrawal, chief business officer at Mufin Green Finance. The success of this policy will depend on efficient implementation and complementary support systems such as financing, charging infrastructure and skill development, he added.

Govt not in talks with China to restore supply of rare earth minerals
NEW DELHI: The government is not talking to the Chinese authorities on the country's stricter export controls on rare earth minerals, a key component for manufacturing of cars, especially electric vehicles. A team of the automotive industry is likely to visit China in 2-3 weeks' time to have discussions on restoring supply of these minerals, however, no government representative will be part of the team, said an official in the Ministry of Heavy Industries. Meanwhile, Minister of Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy informed the media that the government is monitoring the situation arisen due to disruption of rare earth minerals, and the government is exploring alternative sources for these minerals. China's stricter export controls on rare earth elements have sparked concerns in India's automotive sector, especially among electric vehicle (EV) makers. Industry sources have said the current stockpiles of these critical metals may last only a few days, and delayed shipments could disrupt operations. China has restricted exports of vital rare earths, including EV magnet components. These elements are essential for power steering, electric windows, and high-efficiency motors, making them indispensable for automakers. The move has unsettled India's auto industry, which already depends heavily on Chinese imports for EV batteries and parts. India isn't alone in this struggle. The US and EU also rely on China, which controls nearly the entire supply chain of these materials. Currently, China supplies 85-95% of the world's rare earth metals, cementing its grip on advanced industries. In a meeting with commerce ministry officials recently, India's auto lobbying body - Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM)- said inventories at auto part makers are expected to run out by the end of May. India's auto sector imported 460 tonnes of rare earth magnets, mostly from China, in 2024-25 and expects to import 700 tonnes worth $30 million this year, according to industry estimates.
