EAD announces 95% completion of first phase of plan to achieve Abu Dhabi's Environmental Centennial 2071
ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), in collaboration with its strategic partners, has announced that 95 per cent of the first phase of the Abu Dhabi Environmental Centennial 2071 Plan was completed by the end of 2024, demonstrating its commitment to a sustainable and forward-looking vision.The milestone was achieved in only the second year since the plan's rollout in 2023, further driving the emirate's environmental sustainability agenda with the ambitious goal of making Abu Dhabi a global leader in environmental and climate action by 2071.Abu Dhabi Government has achieved 359 milestones and positive outcomes under the plan, with 63 initiatives exceeding their targeted goals. These achievements were made possible through the active participation of several key government entities including: Department of Municipalities and Transport – Abu Dhabi; Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi; Department of Energy – Abu Dhabi; Department of Government Enablement – Abu Dhabi; Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority; Abu Dhabi Investment Office; Abu Dhabi Public Health Center; Abu Dhabi Mobility; and Abu Dhabi Maritime. The government's international collaboration spans more than 24 countries worldwide to help fulfil the plan's objectives.Sheikha Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of the Integrated Environmental Policy and Planning Sector at EAD, said: 'This remarkable achievement, which has exceeded expectations, is the result of collaborative efforts among leading government entities that place sustainability at the heart of their priorities – fully aligned with Abu Dhabi's vision. These outcomes reflect our strong belief in collective action and the spirit of positivity that continues to guide us and our partners forward in achieving the Abu Dhabi Environmental Centennial 2071 goals." The first pathway, A vibrant emirate, thriving in nature, achieved an 88 per cent completion rate, encompassing several key accomplishments. These include the implementation of a comprehensive aquaculture development plan, the launch of the UAE's first hydrogeological map – which serves as a national reference for groundwater resource assessment – plus the development of a comprehensive sustainable agricultural development plan and the creation of an integrated air quality modelling framework. Other milestones include the launch of Abu Dhabi's Guide for the Safe Use of Bicycles and E-scooters, the update of infrastructure guidelines for micro-mobility, and the development of a research agenda and observatory plan for indoor air quality in priority sectors.The second pathway, Green force resilient to climate change, exceeded its set targets, reaching a completion rate of 102 per cent. This pathway saw the implementation of numerous projects and initiatives, including the development of the 2025-2050 Environmental Climate Adaptation Plan in conjunction with 41 entities, the establishment of smart agriculture standards to ensure sustainable food security, and the formulation of a comprehensive energy sector policy framework, consisting of 93 initiatives extending to 2035. It also included the design and implementation of hydrogen and electric bus charging infrastructure, and the launch of electric bus operations – a project that went on to win a global innovation award in sustainability. Additional achievements include the development of a Marine Sector Sustainability Action Plan and the Abu Dhabi Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy 2030.Under the third pathway, Enablers for future environmental leadership, participating entities achieved a 97 per cent completion rate. Highlights include the launch of the Emirate's Dark Sky general policy – an initiative aimed at reducing nighttime light pollution – and the introduction of a community engagement initiative to co-design solutions for air and noise quality. In the area of environmental education and awareness, Abu Dhabi hosted the 12th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC), reinforcing international cooperation, and launched the seventh edition of the Sustainable Schools Initiative.Within the same framework, a Marine Sustainability Research Centre was established under the emirate's marine sector, and Sukun, the world's largest 3D-printed water taxi, was launched. An intelligent soil quality monitoring system was also developed, integrating artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and spectroscopy for pollutant detection.Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with its strategic partners, continues to strengthen the emirate's leadership in environmental and climate action. The agency remains committed to achieving the goals of the Environmental Centennial 2071, advancing both local and international partnerships and building a sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come. Work is currently underway on planning the next phase of the Abu Dhabi Environmental Centennial 2071 Plan.

ADHA launches interactive digital platform for residential land and residence exchange service
1 Aug 2025 18:35 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)The Abu Dhabi Housing Authority (ADHA) has transformed the exchange services for lands and houses in Abu Dhabi by introducing a fully digital experience through the Iskan Abu Dhabi App. This is part of a series of updates aimed at enhancing the user journey and streamlining access to housing benefits via the new updates include the activation of the customer-to-customer exchange service for houses and land in Abu Dhabi, as well as the launch of an interactive digital platform within the Iskan Abu Dhabi App, to further enhance the exchange services. The platform empowers citizens seeking to exchange their housing or land benefits to post them on the app, making them visible to all users interested in property exchange. It also enables citizens to browse, explore, and select options that best align with their needs and preferences. The new updates enable citizens to exchange their housing or land benefits through the app using three options: as a mutual agreement between two citizens, exchange by searching for suitable properties on the platform, or by submitting a request to exchange with available properties from the government's inventory. Hamad Hareb Al Muhairi, Director-General of ADHA, said: 'We have strategically upgraded the exchange services to fulfil the requirements of citizens seeking to exchange their land or houses within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The update marks the shift to a fully digital experience, allowing users to list their properties and explore various exchange options through an interactive platform. The platform provides essential details such as location, plot size, and infrastructure readiness, among others. Citizens can now easily identify options that best align with their family needs, submit an exchange request through the app, and even receive the title deed, all from the comfort of their homes."At ADHA, we remain committed to providing smart solutions and launching initiatives to assist citizens who have received residential land but have not yet activated their loans or started construction to make use of their allocated loans within the specified timeframe. Through the update, we have expanded the range of available land options, presenting more practical and user-friendly solutions to citizens. Moreover, through our strategic partnership with 'Teyaseer', we are offering complimentary support services to housing loan beneficiaries, assisting them in everything from design and contractor selection to overseeing the construction process until the final handover of the property.'Citizens may submit land exchange requests by the following terms and conditions; the land to be exchanged must be residential and undivided, it must be free of any existing construction, except for a boundary wall (if present), it must not have any construction-related obstacles, except for the lack of infrastructure services, there must be no legal or regulatory restrictions or third-party rights associated with the land, and the land being exchanged must be within the same geographical area, except in cases of social and humanitarian the exchange of government housing units, the following conditions must be met; the houses must be government grants that are suitable for living, and undivided, the difference in the land area of the two houses must not exceed 30 per cent, and the difference in built-up area must not exceed 10 per cent, the age difference of the two houses must not exceed 10 years, there must be no legal or regulatory restrictions or third-party rights associated with the houses and the houses must be located within the same geographical area. If it is proven that either or both parties involved in the exchange have received financial gain or any form of compensation for it, the exchange approval will be revoked, without prejudice to any criminal, civil, or administrative liability. Abu Dhabi suspends company for emissions breaches in air quality clampdown
The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi has suspended operations at an industrial facility in Mussafah for exceeding emissions limits. The authority said inspections found the breaches had caused a "negative impact on local air quality". It took action against the unnamed company after receiving complaints from the public about strong smells and pollution. The agency said it will continue its monitoring and inspection operations "to help maintain a cleaner, safer and more sustainable Abu Dhabi", in a statement shared on social media on Thursday. "We call on all industrial facilities to fully comply with environmental standards to protect public health and preserve the natural environment we all depend on," it added. Mussafah is one of the capital's busiest industrial zones and is home to factories, garages, warehouses and a port. Air quality strategy In May 2024, Environment Agency Abu Dhabi set out a green action plan aimed at driving up air quality, reducing noise pollution and holding industries to account for their impact on the environment. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed, Ruler's Representative of Al Dhafra Region and chairman of the agency, issued a resolution under which all businesses and establishments that need environmental licences to operate must commit to supporting efforts towards cleaner air. The agency pledged to monitor ambient air quality, periodically assessing levels of pollutants to ensure they do not exceed maximum limits. Other tasks include preparing and reviewing environmental studies to set standards for development projects and infrastructure in order to manage emission levels. This followed the launch, in November 2023, of an air quality improvement plan to pinpoint pollution hotspots and curb the environmental impact of construction. The cutting-edge air-quality system developed by the environment agency aims to reduce exposure to pollution and provide cleaner air across the capital. It includes the release of detailed air-quality maps each year. Abu Dhabi last month unveiled a 25-year plan to address the growing threat of climate change and protect the emirate's precious natural resources for future generations. The comprehensive strategy will focus on bolstering the "highly vulnerable" environmental systems of groundwater, soil and biodiversity, which are viewed as critical to human health, water security and agricultural productivity. The Abu Dhabi Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the Environment Sector (2025–2050) assesses a wide variety of climate-related risks and outlines 142 strategies to be implemented by 2050, including 86 to be introduced in the next five years.
