33 killed in Sudan strikes blamed on paramilitary RSF
The attacks came after six straight days of RSF drone strikes on the Army-led government's wartime capital Port Sudan damaged key infrastructure including the power grid and the country's last operational civilian airport.
On Friday evening, at least 14 members of the same family were killed in an air strike on a displacement camp in the vast western region of Darfur, a rescue group said, blaming the paramilitaries.
The Abu Shouk camp "was the target of intense bombardment by the Rapid Support Forces on Friday evening", said the group of volunteer aid workers, which also reported wounded.
"Fourteen Sudanese, members of the same family, were killed" and several people wounded, it said in a statement.
The camp near El-Fasher, the last state capital in Darfur still out of the RSF's control, is plagued by famine, according to the United Nations.
It is home to tens of thousands of people who fled the violence of successive conflicts in Darfur and the conflict that has been tearing Africa's third largest country apart since 2023.
The RSF has shelled the camp several times in recent weeks.
Abu Shouk is located near the Zamzam camp, which the RSF seized in April after a devastating offensive that virtually emptied it.
Drone attacks
The United Nations says nearly one million people had been sheltering at the site.
On Saturday, an RSF strike on a prison in the army-controlled southern city of El-Obeid killed at least 19 people and wounded 45, a medical source said.
The source told AFP that the jail in the North Kordofan state capital was hit by an RSF drone.
Elsewhere on Saturday, army warplanes struck RSF positions in the Darfur cities of Nyala and El-Geneina, destroying arms depots and military equipment, a military source said.
This week, the RSF said it had taken the strategic town of En Nahud in West Kordofan, a key army supply line to Darfur.
Sudan's army-aligned authorities accuse the United Arab Emirates of supplying drones to the RSF, which has no air force of its own.
The war -- which began as a power struggle between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo -- has killed tens of thousands, displaced more than 13 million people and triggered what the United Nations calls one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters.
It has effectively divided the country in two with the army controlling the north, east and centre while the RSF and its allies dominate nearly all of Darfur in the west and parts of the south.
Both sides have been accused of committing war crimes.

‘Call It Sanatani or Hindu Terrorism': Prithviraj Chavan Sparks Row After Malegaon Blast Verdict
Last Updated: His remarks have triggered strong political reactions, with critics accusing him of communalising the issue, while supporters argue he was highlighting the inconsistencies Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan stirred controversy on Thursday with a sharp reaction to the acquittal of all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. While speaking to reporters, Chavan alleged that the case was deliberately weakened and raised serious questions about the investigation under the BJP-led government. 'Someone definitely carried out the blast in Malegaon. I already knew this would be the outcome of the case because it was initiated during the UPA government, and later, the BJP came to power. The NIA weakened the case. Under whose leadership is the NIA working?" Chavan said. Commenting on the terminology often used in such cases, Chavan said, 'I request, don't use the term 'saffron terrorism'. If you must, then say 'Sanatani terrorist' or 'Hindu terrorist'." However, he added a caveat, saying, 'But in truth, terrorism has no caste or religion." His remarks have triggered strong political reactions, with critics accusing him of communalising the issue, while supporters argue he was highlighting the inconsistencies and failures in the investigation process. The blast took place on September 29, 2008, in Malegaon, Maharashtra, which killed six people and injured over a hundred. The trial of the case spanned over 17 years. view comments First Published: August 01, 2025, 07:43 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Panneerselvam meets Stalin, snaps ties with NDA
Expelled AIADMK leader and former Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam (OPS) quit the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Thursday, saying 'anything can happen during elections'. The move came on a day OPS was seen meeting DMK chief and chief minister MK Stalin twice. Former CM O Panneerselvam with chief minister MK Stalin and Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday. (CMO Tamil Nau/X) 'There are no permanent friends or enemies in politics. Anything can happen during elections,' OPS told reporters later. The announcement came hours after Panneerselvam met Stalin during his morning walk. He, however, maintained that he moved on after conveying his pleasantries. Later in the day, too, OPS called on the CM at his residence, but called it a 'courtesy visit' to enquire about health. 'There were no political talks,' he asserted. Stalin underwent a therapeutic procedure on July 24 and he was discharged on July 27 after successful recovery. Earlier in the day, OPS's loyalist Panruti Ramachandran announced his factions exit from NDA at a press conference in Chennai. 'The reason is widely known,' he said. Asked about the reason for his exit, OPS said: 'I did not feel disrespected (by the BJP) but I've self respect in politics. I've been with Amma (Jayalalithaa) for 25 years working in the govenrment and the party.' He wished the EPS-led AIADMK the best for joining with the BJP. The development comes days after OPS wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to Tamil Nadu. However, after he was denied nod, he publicly criticised the Union government on social media over the delay in disbursing Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) funds to the state. OPS' exit also comes days after AIADMK's Muslim face and former minister, Anwhar Raajhaa quit the party to join rival DMK who said that the AIADMK was 'trapped in the BJP's hands.' AIADMK general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) expelled OPS in 2022. The two had been sharing power until then to run the party. Unable to reclaim the AIADMK and losing legal battles against EPS over his expulsion, OPS contested as an independent candidate under the NDA's fold in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and lost. Panneerselvam, who had twice been Tamil Nadu's stop-gap chief minister, was appointed chief minister for the third time in December 2016 when Jayalalithaa died. This stint, however, didn't last long and he was replaced by Palaniswami in February 2017 who then had the support of Jayalalithaa aide VK Sasikala. The two rivals patched up in August 2017 and Panneerselvam returned to the government as Palaniswami's deputy.
