Thick layer of dust engulfs Delhi-NCR, reduces visibility across key areas

Residents in Delhi-NCR were greeted by a thick layer of dust on Thursday morning, following a sudden shift in weather after several days of scorching heat. Areas including Akshardham, Kartavya Path near India Gate and multiple sectors in Noida were engulfed in haze as dust swept through the region, reducing visibility and impacting normal routines.
The weather disturbance came just a day after the national capital recorded soaring temperatures, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) noting a maximum of 40.2 degrees Celsius — slightly above the seasonal average. Aya Nagar logged a high of 41.6 degrees Celsius, while Palam and Ridge areas reported 40.8 degrees Celsius and 40.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The dust blanket disrupted morning commutes and affected office-goers across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and Greater Noida. Videos and photos circulated on social media showed major roads and landmarks shrouded in dust, with poor visibility causing inconvenience for residents.

Authorities have urged people to stay indoors where possible, remain hydrated and wear breathable, light clothing. With conditions expected to remain unstable, residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and protect themselves from dust exposure.
Not the first this season
This is the second disruption due to dust to hit the region in recent months. In April 2025, a similar weather event — accompanied by heavy rainfall — led to flight delays at the Indira Gandhi International Airport and caused the death of one person due to a wall collapse.
The IMD had earlier issued alerts for thunderstorms, rain and strong winds across Delhi-NCR.

'Cyclone Shakti' likely to form over Andaman Sea?
The IMD on Tuesday confirmed the southwest monsoon's advance into parts of the south Bay of Bengal, south Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands and some areas of the north Andaman Sea.
As the monsoon progresses, focus has shifted to a developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal. On Tuesday, the IMD said, 'An upper air cyclonic circulation lay over Andaman Sea between 1.5 km and 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height.'
According to reports, this system could develop into a low-pressure area between 16 and 22 May. If it strengthens further, a cyclonic storm may form between 23 and 28 May. If named, it will be called 'Shakti', a name suggested by Sri Lanka.
Forecasts suggest the potential cyclone could make landfall between May 24 and 26. Vulnerable areas include coastal Odisha and West Bengal in India, as well as Khulna and Chattogram in Bangladesh. The system could bring intense rainfall, strong winds and coastal flooding, particularly in low-lying zones.
Authorities in both India and Bangladesh have started preparations. Residents in high-risk areas are being advised to identify safe shelters, check the functionality of early warning systems and stock up on essentials.
Rainfall forecast across India
Apart from the cyclone watch, the IMD has predicted widespread rainfall in various regions due to multiple upper air circulations. Light to moderate showers with thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected in Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, east Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh through mid-May.
'Isolated heavy rainfall [is likely] over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya during 12-16 May and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during 12-15 May, with isolated very heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya on 13-14 May and over Tripura on 12 and 13 May,' the IMD said.
Pre-monsoon showers are also expected in southern and central states including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Chhattisgarh.

Southern part of Bihar to remain dry for next 3 days: Met office

Patna: The state's capital on Friday received light rainfall. However, as per the forecast of Indian Meteorological Department, Patna, the city including the other districts of southern Bihar is likely to remain dry for the next three days. On the other hand, most of the districts of northern Bihar are likely to receive pre monsoon showers on Saturday and Sunday. Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Madhepura, Saharsa, Purnea and Katihar may receive rainfall at one or two places on Saturday and Sunday, while Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Vaishali, Sheohar and Samastipur districts are likely to experience isolated rainfall on Sunday. IMD had earlier predicted the arrival of monsoon in the state as per its usual time, between May 14 and 16. However, the depression over the Bay of Bengal that brought heavy rainfall to the northeastern region, weakened after it reached Sikkim. Furthermore, "westerly winds became strong enough in Bihar to weaken the easterly wind," said an official. On Friday, Patna recorded 1.5 mm of rainfall, Bhagalpur 3.4 mm, Darbhanga 31 mm, Gopalganj 23mm, Motihari 2 mm, Madhepura 2.5 mm, Vaishali 7 mm, and Rajgir 4.5 mm of rainfall. The maximum temperature of the state was recorded at 38.5 degrees celsius in Buxar, whereas the minimum in Vaishali was recorded at 19.6 degree celsius. No major change in the maximum or minimum temperature is expected in the next 24 hours. The maximum temperature is expected to remain in the range of 36-38 degrees celsius for the next two days in the capital, along with most of the southern and north western districts, while the minimum temperature will range from 26 - 28 degrees celsius on Saturday and 28-30 degrees celsius thereafter. PM Modi To Flag Off Kashmir Vande Bharat Express: What Makes It Unique

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a Vande Bharat Express train connecting Katra and Srinagar on Friday. In contrast to the 136 other Vande Bharat Express trains already in operation around the nation, this train contains a number of additional amenities to accommodate passengers' needs and operational difficulties in the harsh Kashmir weather. Why Is Kashmir Vande Bharat Special? The Vande Bharat Express in Kashmir is specially designed to operate in extreme cold conditions, including temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius. The train is equipped with heated windscreens so it automatically removes frost, improving the driver visibility in extreme cold conditions. The train has advanced heating systems to keep the vacuum system running with warm air even when the temperature goes below zero. It also has thermally insulated washrooms designed to prevent toilet tanks and pipes from freezing. Made under the "Made in India" initiative, the Kashmir Vande Bharat Express is equipped with advanced and modern technology and runs fully on electricity instead of diesel. The train also has an anti-spall layer, which prevents small sharp pieces like snow debris and stones from flying into the train if the windshield or windows are damaged. Kashmir Vande Bharat Express Features The train has an air dryer system for heating, which means it removes moisture from the air and prevents the brake system and other components from freezing in extreme weather conditions. It also features a 5 kVA transformer to power the train. It is also equipped with fully air-conditioned coaches and modern amenities such as automatic plug doors, mobile charging sockets and CCTV facilities. Two Vande Bharat trains will run between Srinagar and Katra via Banihal six days a week, except Wednesday. The train will leave from Srinagar at 8 am, reach Banihal at 9:02 am and arrive in Katra at 10:58 am. It will depart from Katra at 2:55 pm, halt at 4:40 pm and reach Srinagar at 5:53 pm. The travel time between Katra and Srinagar will be cut by two to three hours with the Vande Bharat Express. On Friday, PM Modi will also inaugurate India's first cable-stayed bridge, the Anji Khad Bridge, and the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge.
