Perfect practice for Wrexham against Charlton in League One

Perfect practice for Wrexham against Charlton in League One

Leader Live30-04-2025

The Reds won 3-0 to finish runners-up in League One with a game to go and secure an historic third successive promotion.
Wrexham were in control after taking a two-goal lead after just 18 minutes as Ollie Rathbone broke the deadlock before Sam Smith scored with a stunning volley from Matty James' pass.
Smith made sure of victory with a late header after getting on the end of Max Cleworth's cross and although all three were well taken goals, Parkinson was particularly pleased with the opener.
Captain James McClean played a short corner to James who fed Rathbone and the midfielder found the back of the net from just outside the net.
It was something the players had worked on in training ahead of the clash because Parkinson identified something that he felt the Reds could exploit.
"That goal was very rewarding," said Parkinson.
"We looked at Charlton and the way they defended corners and we felt we could exploit them with that short corner.
"We went through it the day before and scored almost the identical goal and when something like that comes off, it's very satisfying for all the stuff.
"It got us off to a brilliant start and then Sam's acrobatic finish from Matty's pass got us in a strong position.
"From there on in, we were mainly in control of the game and the third goal was the icing on the cake, and the the roof certainly came off!"

Luis Diaz ‘talking to clubs' as speculation surrounds Liverpool future

The Colombia international has two years left on his current deal and this week the Reds rebuffed an approach from Barcelona, who are long-time admirers, insisting the player was not for sale. However, it is understood there are currently no plans to open negotiations about an extension for Diaz, who turned 28 in January. A post shared by Luis Fernando Diaz Marulanda (@luisdiaz19_) 'We are currently in contact with Liverpool, because we are talking to clubs, and that's normal given the transfer market that's opening. We're trying to arrange what's best for us,' he told a press conference before Colombia's World Cup qualifier at home to Peru. 'We're talking to clubs, it's normal in the market and we're looking at what's best for us. 'I'm waiting to see what happens. I'm very happy at Liverpool, I've always said so. They've welcomed me very well from day one. 'If they give us a good renewal or I stay there for two years, I'll be happy. Now it's up to them.' Off the field the LFC Foundation and former players association Forever Reds have donated £50,000 to the Liverpool Spirit Appeal, which is raising money to support those directly affected by the incident which left a number of people injured following the club's victory parade in the city last week. Proceeds raised from the recent LFC Foundation Gala Ball have helped double the total of the fund, set up by the Community Foundation for Merseyside in partnership with Liverpool City Council, to over £100,000.
