No target for Malaysia in Madurai and Chennai

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) has not set any target for the Junior World Cup (JWC) in Madurai and Chennai, India, from Nov 29-Dec 10.
Malaysia are drawn in Group E with the Netherlands, England and Austria in the 24-team JWC.
MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said that is because there is no long term training programme to prepare the current national junior team for this.
"More than 10 years ago we had a four-year training programme and also had money to prepare a good team which finished fourth in the JWC under coach K. Dharmaraj (in New Delhi in 2013).
But for the 2027 JWC, the MHC plans to have a well prepared team. "We need to plan long term for the juniors for the 2027 JWC. Nor Saiful Zaini will be in charge of the Under-18 team for 2027.
"We are going to keep the players for the next two years and we are also going to look for more talent for the 2027 JWC."
Meanwhile, Nor Saiful said his team have a semi-finals target in the boys' Under-18 Asia Cup in Dazhou, China. Malaysia are drawn in Group B with Japan,
Taiwan, Uzbekistan, Indonesia and Kazakhstan while Group A comprises Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong.

Cricket-Gill and Bumrah in India's Asia Cup squad, Jaiswal ignored

FILE PHOTO: Cricket - ICC T20 World Cup 2024 - Final - India v South Africa - Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados - June 29, 2024 India's Jasprit Bumrah in action bowling REUTERS/Ash Allen/File Photo NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Defending champions India named top order batter Shubman Gill and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in their Twenty20 squad on Tuesday for next month's Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and middle order batter Shreyas Iyer, however, could not make the cut in the 15-member squad led by Suryakumar Yadav. India's test captain Gill has not played a T20 International since July last year when he was Suryakumar's deputy on the tour of Sri Lanka. "That's where we started a new cycle," Suryakumar, who took over T20 captaincy from Rohit Sharma after India won the 20-overs World Cup title last year, told reporters. "After that he got busy with all the test series and he didn't get an opportunity to play T20s because he was busy playing test cricket and Champions Trophy. "So he's there in the squad and we're happy to have him." India also included Bumrah, whose workload has been a major concern for the team think-tank, which played him in three of the five tests in England earlier this year. With three opening options in Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson - India could not accommodate Jaiswal. "With regard to Yashasvi, it's just unfortunate again," chief selector Ajit Agarkar said. "There's Abhishek Sharma, what he's done over the last year or so, plus he can bowl a little bit, he gives us that option if required. "One of these guys was going to miss out, Yashasvi just has to wait for his chance." Samson and Jitesh Sharma are the two wicketkeepers in the side, which also includes left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav. India begin their Group A campaign against hosts United Arab Emirates in Dubai before meeting arch-rivals Pakistan at the same venue four days later. India squad: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (Reporting by Amlan Chakraborty in New Delhi; editing by Christian Radnedge)

A keirin spot at the SEA Games in December is at stake for the riders when they compete at the Track Asia Cup as national track cycling team head coach Harnizam Basri is selecting the second rider to race the keirin. Harnizam will pick the second rider for the SEA Games based on their performances at the Asia Cup. The squad will leave for the Asia Cup, which is a UCI ranked Class 1 event, on Monday. Mohd Shah Firdaus Sahrom and Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri, who are the only cyclists under the Road to Gold programme, will not be competing at the Asia Cup though. "We have decided not to send Shah and Izzah as we want them to focus on preparations for the World Championships in Santiago, Chile (Oct 22-26)," said Harnizam. "We will be sending Mohd Fadhil Zonis, Mohd Ridwan Sahrom and Akmal Jusena Nazimi for the Asia Cup. "They will compete in the men's team sprint, keirin as well as the individual sprint events. "We will be choosing the second rider for the SEA Games keirin based on their performances at the Asia Cup, so they will have to compete with each other for that slot. It has to be earned on merit. "For the women's team, we have selected Anis Amira Rosidi, Nurul Aliana Syafika Azizan and Nur Alyssa Mohd Farid and they will compete in the same events as the men's in Suphanburi. "We want to gauge our performances in both the men's and women's team sprint events, especially as our men's team will be competing in the team sprint event at the SEA Games. "It will also be Aliana's first international competition since coming back. She has been doing well in training," added Harnizam. Aliana spent months recovering after suffering a fractured rib and concussion after crashing in a local race in October last year. Shah Firdaus has also been on the comeback trail as he has been battling tendonitis in his right knee since February but has shown improvement in recent months. The men's keirin and men's team sprint are the only sprint discipline events that have been included for the Thailand SEA Games this year. Malaysia though are hopeful of dominating the track cycling events, which offers five gold medals.
