Jonathan Milan avoided a late crash in Valence to sprint to his second victory of this year's Tour de France and strengthen his grip on the green jersey while Tadej Pogacar stayed safe in yellow.
Several riders went down in wet, slippery conditions entering the last kilometre of the 160km stage from Bollene, blocking the road and leaving less than a dozen riders to contest the sprint.
From their number, it was no surprise to see the in-form Milan hold off a late charge from Jordi Meeus.
It was a victory Milan needed in the fight for the points leader's green jersey as his advantage over Pogacar at the start of the day was 11 points, and given this could prove to be the last chance for the sprinters with the Montmartre climb added to Sunday's final stage into Paris.
The late crash meant that general classification times were neutralized for those in the front group, allowing Pogacar to roll home still four minutes and 15 seconds clear of Jonas Vingegaard going into two big stages in the Alps.
Biniam Girmay was among the sprinters caught in the crash and the Eritrean looked in some discomfort after receiving treatment.
Tim Merlier did not go down but was held up, unable to contest the sprint.
'I'm really happy, I'm without words,' said Milan, who credited his Lidl-Trek team-mates after getting through Tuesday's stage to Mont Ventoux. 'I didn't survive alone, it's always with the help of team-mates. Without all of this, I already would not be here ...
'They also helped me when I was dropped on the first climb and then on the second climb did a really good pace.
'It was a difficult final because of the weather and the roundabouts, I was a bit scared but they helped me and this is really fantastic, it's really a team victory.'
In a Tour which has offered relatively few sprint opportunities, the fast men knew they needed to take this one, and particularly Milan, given the criticism directed at his team after they failed to fight for the points at Tuesday's intermediate sprint before Ventoux.
Milan was dropped by the peloton on the first of two categorised climbs on this stage which had left open the possibility of a breakaway prospering here.
But he recovered with the help of team-mate Quinn Simmons, who then put in another big turn to help reel in a four-man group up the road.
The last of those escapees, Jonas Abrahamsen, was reeled in 4km from the finish but by then rain was falling heavily, creating the treacherous conditions that led to the crash which effectively blocked the road under the flamme rouge.
Milan's points lead ballooned to 72 points, but he will still need to target the intermediate sprints in the mountains to be sure of holding off Pogacar, who has a narrow opportunity to become the first man to win all three major classifications at a Tour since Eddy Merckx in 1969.

Raducanu ‘excited' working with her new coach Roig

PA Media/DPA London Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu is 'very excited' to be working with Rafael Nadal's former coach Francis Roig. The 22-year-old has worked with British coach Mark Petchey on an informal basis since March and has now added Roig to her team. Spanish coach Roig worked alongside Nadal and with Nadal's uncle Toni for the majority of his career, where he won 22 grand slams. Speaking about teaming up with Roig, Raducanu told Sky Sports: 'It's going really well, it's my second day here with him here, but I did a few days in London before I came out here. 'He's obviously got a bank of experience and I'm very excited to continue working with him and to have him on my side.' Roig joins Raducanu's coaching set-up as she continues preparations for the US Open, the tournament she won in 2021. Recently, the Briton followed a round-three exit to Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon with a semi-final showing at the Citi Open, where she was eventually beaten by Anna Kalinskaya. Up next for Raducanu is the Cincinnati Open, where she received a bye in the first round and will then face either Katie Boulter or Olga Danilovic. The US Open begins later in August and Raducanu revealed that she is working with Roig on certain areas to improve. She added: 'I'm working on the quality of my shots to be better. I think against the very top that's what it needs, it needs to improve. So I'm hoping that with time - I'm pretty patient, I'm going to try and be pretty patient - that it'll improve.'

Maresca urges Chelsea fans not to put too much pressure on Estevao

PAMedia/dpa London Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca urged supporters not to place too much pressure on Estevao Willian following the Brazil international's move from Palmeiras. The 18-year-old's £29 million ($38.79 million) move to Stamford Bridge was first agreed in May 2024 but he remained in Brazil for a year, scoring against his new club in the United States when the teams met in the Club World Cup in July. He finally made the move to west London this week having scored 27 goals and recorded 15 assists in his 83 appearances for Palmeiras. Considered one of the brightest talents to come out of Brazil in recent years, Maresca is eager that expectations surrounding Estêvão are moderated ahead of the new season. 'We need to pay a little bit more attention, because first of all he's from the other part of the world and also he's very, very young,' he said. 'So we need to pay attention. 'As I said, (he is) not under pressure, give him happiness, give him time, he needs to adapt. Hopefully we can give him minutes, so he's even more happy. But for sure, he's a talented player. 'For me, the biggest mistake we can do with him is to put him under pressure. He's very young, he needs to adapt. 'I met him for the first time in the US when we played against Palmeiras. He's a fantastic player, he's very young, he's a happy boy. He's always laughing, typical from a Brazilian guy, and we need to keep him happy.' Estêvão is one of six summer signings expected to be part of Maresca's squad this season. And with 10 departures it has been another summer of change at the club's Cobham training base.

Antonio a free agent after West Ham decide against offering new deal

PAMedia/dpa London West Ham United forward Michail Antonio is to leave the club after 10 years and 323 appearances as the Hammers decided not to offer him a new deal. The 35-year-old has not played for the club since being involved in a serious car accident in December which left him with a broken leg. He has been out of contract since the end of June, with head coach Graham Potter confirming this week that he was not a part of his plans for the new season. The club said they are exploring options for Antonio to remain at the London Stadium in a non-playing capacity. In a statement, West Ham said: 'Michail will always be a much-loved and respected member of the West Ham United family. 'As has been the case since December, the club will continue to support and assist him in his ongoing rehabilitation, offering him access to training, facilities and medical care if needed. 'Dialogue continues over his future involvement with the club in an alternative capacity - including one that would enable others to benefit from his experience and leadership qualities - and he will forever hold a special place in our 130-year history. 'Everyone at West Ham United would like to sincerely thank Michail for his outstanding, dedicated service in a claret and blue shirt over the last 10 years. 'Further recognition of his magnificent contribution will appear across Club channels in the coming days and weeks.' His departure brings to an end a hugely-memorable decade in east London for the Jamaica international, who joined from Nottingham Forest in 2015. The pinnacle of his time at the London Stadium came when he helped the club to a first trophy in 43 years with victory over Fiorentina in the Conference League final in 2023. He was part of three European campaigns under former boss David Moyes, which also included a run to the Europa League semi-finals in 2022 where they eventually lost to Eintracht Frankfurt. He scored the club's first goal in Europe in 22 years when he netted away to Dinamo Zagreb in September 2021. In all, he scored 83 goals for the club including 68 in 268 Premier League appearances, one of which came in West Ham's final match at their former Upton Park home, a 3-2 victory over Manchester United in 2016. His final appearance in claret and blue came in a 3-1 defeat away to Leicester on December 3, four days before the collision which left him with a broken leg, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
