Independent3 days ago
The nominees for the 2025 Ballon d'Or have been announced, with PSG duo Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha leading the 30-player nominations alongside Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal.
PSG's treble-winning season and maiden Champions League win means that members of Luis Enrique's squad dominate the nominations, with 10 players nominated including Dembele, Vitinha and midfield partner Fabian Ruiz and full-back duo Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi.
Mo Salah and Cole Palmer headline the Premier League contingent, with the former producing a record-setting season as he led Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th top-flight title while Palmer was instrumental to Chelsea's victorious Club World Cup campaign.
Barcelona's domestic double and impressive Champions League run sees Raphinha and Pedri nominated alongside emerging star Yamal, while Scott McTominay is one of the new names on the nomination sheet, with the former Manchester United man having led Napoli to a Scudetto with 12 goals and six assists in Serie A.
The women's award – known as the Ballon d'Or Feminin – is dominated by players belonging to Euros finalists England and Spain, with 10 nominations between the two.
Unsurprisingly, Euro winners England have three nominees, including captain Leah Williamson, Chloe Kelly and Alessia Russo, who is among the favourites after also leading Arsenal to a second win in the Women's Champions League.
Two-time Ballon d'Or winners Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati – the current holder – are among the favourites, with Patri Guijarro and Esther Gonzalez among the other Spanish players to earn a nomination.
The Ballon d'Or ceremonies takes place at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on 22 September, with the main gongs presented alongside awards for the best young player (known as the Kopa Trophy), the best goalkeeper (the Yashin Trophy) and the best men's and women's coach and clubs.

Wolves pay tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva ahead of friendly against Celta Vigo at Molineux

Wolves paid an emotional tribute to their former player Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva ahead of their pre-season friendly against Celta Vigo at Molineux on Saturday. Jota and his brother passed away in a car crash in Spain on July 3. Wolves were playing at Molineux for the first time since the brothers passed away, with a minute's silence being held ahead of the game. Floral wreaths were also laid on the pitch. Jota initially joined Wolves on loan in 2017 before signing permanently the following year. He was part of the Wolves squad that won the Championship title in the 2017-18 campaign and went on to feature for the club in the Premier League prior to joining Liverpool. During his time at Wolves Jota made 131 appearances, while he scored 44 goals and provided 19 assists. Wolves are planning further tributes ahead of their opening game of the Premier League season at home to Manchester City next weekend. Hibs stand to benefit if John McGinn is allowed to leave Aston Villa this summer - with Everton one of the sides keen. The Scotland hero started out at St Mirren and moved on to Easter Road for a memorable three year spell, where he won the Scottish Cup and Championship. McGinn has now made himself Aston Villa captain, remaining with the Villans since joining them in 2018 while playing Championship football, embarking on a journey that's included Champions League action. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Now Everton boss David Moyes is said to be keen on a deal, with Newcastle United also monitoring the situation. Talk of an £18m bid has surfaced and the interested has been addressed on Sky Sports, with Hibs likely keeping track of developments. As part of the deal that clinched a move to Aston Villa, Hibs bagged a sell on fee of 15%, with St Mirren due 30% of that. Even with the Buddies taking a chunk, a substantial eight figure move would spark a cash windfall in Leith. John McGinn to Everton addressed Presenter Mark McAdam said: 'If you speak to anyone at the top of Aston Villa, they'll say not for sale. Club captain, absolutely no chance. We don't want to lose him. He's going into the final two years of his Aston Villa contract. We know how important he is to Unai Emery and that team, not just on the pitch, but off the pitch as well. He's an exceptional captain, exceptional leader, and someone that really brings and gels that dressing room together. 'But you can understand why there is interest in a player of his calibre and quality. David Moyes loves his leadership skills, loves his experience, and of course, that versatility, because he can play in multiple positions as well. So that's why there is that attraction to someone who I guess they maybe felt like they could tease out of Aston Villa. We know that Aston Villa have to be respectful and mindful of FFP and PSR at the moment as well because of their current situation. 'And maybe there will be one or two clubs that just try and tempt them with an offer. He is 30 years old. Now, he's not got a huge resale value, although we've been saying for years that resale value doesn't exist. Look at Son-Heung min going to LAFC for £20m at 33. So, if you're the right type of player, you've got the right type of global profile, there is still value there. Every time I talk about John McGinn, Hibs fans message me and say, what's happening? What's happening? Is he going? Because obviously for them, that chunk of money could be quite substantial for them to reinvest as well.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad John McGinn transfer prediction Former Wales striker Robert Earnshaw was also on the panel and made a prediction that would be music to the ears of the Easter Road coffers. He wonders if £30m could tempt Aston Villa into selling to Everton, which would bank Hibs a cool sum just over the £3m mark even with the St Mirren percentage to factor in. He added: 'There's still value there. John McGinn is an interesting one because this is my take on it. Everton have gone in and said, listen, would you take 18 million? I think if they up it, there'll be more of a discussion because he's a quality player, quality leader, fits Everton perfectly. Does £30m tempt you? I think there'll be more conversations with that. 'He's excellent. What you're going to get from McGinn is absolute heart, quality at the right time, leadership. But also, I think he's underrated in terms of he's all round, he's tackles, he's creating, he'll give the pass before the final pass. He adds so much to a team and of course, Aston Villa is not going to want him to leave, absolutely not. Maybe the right price, they might look at it, but as footballing-wise, no, no chance. I don't think he actually leaves, but there'll be some discussions and temptation for sure if the price goes up higher.'

Rampant Red Roses make World Cup statement with warm-up thrashing of France

England ran in six tries as they completed their preparations for the Women's Rugby World Cup with a 40-6 win over France. The Red Roses, who kick off their campaign against the United States at Sunderland's Stadium of Light on Friday 22 August, were made to work hard for a 27th successive victory in Mont-de-Marsan by a French side missing first-choice scrum-half Pauline Bourdon Sansus through suspension. England's forward power proved irresistible during the first half as they established a commanding lead, but having seen France all but reel them in before holding on to win their Six Nations grand slam decider in April 43-42, they headed for the dressing room taking nothing for granted. Sadia Kabeya provided the finishing touch to a fourth-minute rolling maul after second row partner Abbie Ward had secured possession at an early line-out, and hooker Amy Cockayne repeated the dose at the end of a powerful 15th-minute drive with Zoe Harrison adding the conversion. Handling errors and imprecision cost John Mitchell 's side further tries as the French conceded a series of penalties which eventually saw lock forward Manae Feleu yellow-carded, and although Morgane Bourgeois reduced the deficit with a penalty in her absence, prop Maud Muir touched down from another rolling maul and Harrison added the extras to make it 19-3 at the break. Bourgeois kicked a second penalty to capitalise on Teani Feleu's rampaging early break as the second half got under way, but scrum-half Natasha Hunt's quick thinking after her pack had forced a scrum penalty sent centre Meg Jones over and Harrison obliged once again. France started to throw the ball around, with half-backs Carla Arbez and Alexandra Chambon both making dangerous breaks and as the England scrum came under pressure, the visitors were starved of meaningful possession. But catch and drive did the trick once again with six minutes remaining for replacement hooker Lark Atkin-Davies to go over, and she added a second three minutes later to allow Harrison to take her tally to 10 points with two more successful kicks.
