A Bangladesh air force training aircraft has crashed into a college and school campus in the capital Dhaka, killing 20 people including the pilot, the military said in a statement.
The F-7 BGI aircraft crashed into the campus of Milestone School and College in Dhaka's Uttara neighbourhood at about 1pm (07:00 GMT) on Monday, when students were taking tests or attending regular classes.
The pilot, Flight Lt. Mohammed Toukir Islam, made 'every effort to divert the aircraft away from densely populated areas toward a more sparsely inhabited location,' the military said, adding that it would investigate the cause of the crash. It said 171 people were injured in the incident. Most of the injured were aged between eight and 14, said Mohammad Maruf Islam, joint director of Dhaka's National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute where many victims were treated. (Agencies) page 5

Suspect in custody after five soldiers shot at US Army's Fort Stewart

Five soldiers were shot during an incident at the United States Army's Fort Stewart in the southern US state of Georgia before the suspected shooter, identified as Army Sergeant Quornelius Radford, was taken into custody, military authorities have said. Parts of the base were placed on temporary lockdown on Wednesday after reports of an active shooter. The five wounded soldiers were treated at the site of the shooting before being transferred to Winn Army Community Hospital. Brigadier General John Lubas, the commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, said that the five soldiers who were shot in the incident are currently in stable condition. Lubas said that the alleged shooter opened fire on his workplace but was tackled 'immediately and without hesitation' by soldiers who saw the shooting taking place. The motivations of the attacker are not yet clear, but the general says the attack was carried out with a personal handgun rather than a military-issued weapon. The injured soldiers were described as Radford's co-workers. Fort Stewart says that law enforcement first responded to reports of a possible shooting in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area at 10:56am ET (14:56 GMT). The base was locked down shortly after 11:04am (15:04 GMT), and the alleged shooter was apprehended at 11:35am (15:35 GMT). The lockdown was in place for about one hour, and three schools outside the base were also placed on lockdown out of what the Liberty County School System said was an 'abundance of caution'. Located about 64km southwest of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest US Army post east of the Mississippi River. It's home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army's 3rd Infantry Division and their family members. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said in a social media post that he was 'saddened by today's tragedy'. 'We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers,'Kemp added. (Agencies)

Ukrainian officer allegedly spied on Western jets for Russia

DPA Kiev A Ukrainian air force officer is said to have spied on the locations and deployment plans of the country's few Western fighter jets for Russia, Ukraine's SBU intelligence service has claimed. The major collected data on the F-16 aircraft from the United States, Mirage jets from France and also Ukrainian Su-24 planes, the SBU said in Kiev on Wednesday. The officer - who had served as a pilot trainer in the Ukrainian air force - allegedly helped Russia to plan missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian air bases. He was detained for treason. There were no independent reports on the case. 'Whoever chooses the side of the occupiers will feel the righteous strength of Ukrainian justice,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. Ukraine, which has been under all-out attack from Russia for more than three years, only has a few dozen Western fighter jets. In the case of the F-16, 42 deliveries are publicly known, the majority of which were delivered by the Netherlands. The aircraft are used less by Ukraine in its own attacks, but play a major role in intercepting Russian drones and missiles. Russia hunts down these jets. For example, it repeatedly fires on the Starokostyantyniv airbase in western Ukraine, where the foreign aircraft are believed to be located.

3 killed in France as car veers off road in local race

DPA Paris A third person has died after a racing car at the Rallye de la Fourme in central France struck several people who were watching the event, reports said on Saturday. The car veered off the road during the event in the Puy-de-Dome region, local officials said in a post on X. After two people were killed at the scene, a third person who was seriously injured died later in hospital. Two of the people who died were brothers, aged 60 and 70, according to reports citing the public prosecutor's office. They said the third person was a father, 44. 'Several people' who were present at the time of the accident were also in shock and were attended to by medics, reports said. An investigation into negligent homicide has been launched, according to broadcaster BFMTV, citing the public prosecutor's office. The car was driven by a 22-year-old woman accompanied by a 51-year-old co-driver, the reports said. The rally was immediately stopped, said local official Joel Mathurin, according to a video broadcast by French channel BFMTV. The race organisers confirmed this in a brief post on Facebook, saying the race was stopped shortly before 11 am (0900 GMT). 'There will be no award ceremony,' they said. The accident affected spectators who were in a cordoned-off area, reports said. An investigation has been launched to clarify the circumstances, Mathurin said in the video on BFMTV. Psychological support was also being provided nearby. The same rally was overshadowed by a fatal accident last year, when a race car hit a man responsible for securing the track, the organizers said.
