Darwin Nunez makes the most of Saudi switch as Liverpool awaits Alexander Isak resolution

Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is already taking well to life in Saudi Arabia. The mercurial Uruguayan forward has scored in consecutive friendlies for his new side Al-Hillal after securing a €53 million ($62 million) move from the Reds in July. Nunez scored 40 goals in 143 games for Liverpool, but often underperformed from his expected goals tally and struggled for confidence in front of goal. His transfer comes amid speculation that the Reds are pursuing Newcastle forward Alexander Isak. The Swedish international is still under contract with the Tyneside club, but Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Isak has "no intention" to play for Newcastle this weekend. READ MORE: Alexander Isak could be given transfer lifeline thanks to PSG READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE: Alexander Isak latest, Luis Diaz talks, Harvey Elliott admission "Alexander Isak's plans remain clear: no intention to be part of the squad against Aston Villa, same against Liverpool next week," Romano wrote. "Isak keeps rejecting new deal approaches as his clear desire remains to join Liverpool asap." Nunez didn't necessarily score against the stiffest competition: his goals came against FC Aarau (a second-tier Swiss side) and SV Waldhof Mannheim (a German third-tier side) in 6-0 and 3-2 wins, respectively. Nunez's goal against Waldhof Mannheim was the third in quick succession (33rd minute) after fullbacks Theo Hernandez (21st) and Joao Cancelo (25th) found the net a minute before. The Uruguayan finds himself in an Al-Hillal side loaded with talent, including Salem Al-Dawsari, Ruben Neves, Bono, Malcom, Kalidou Koulibaly, Hernandez, and Cancelo. His exit from Liverpool was bittersweet, as Nunez often teased the potential that made former manager Jurgen Klopp sign him from Benfica for an initial £64 million in 2022. Mohammed Salah posted an emotional message for his teammate on X. 'I consider myself lucky to have had you as a teammate and friend," the Egyptian wrote. You made us laugh and showed heart in everything you did. You will be missed, and I wish you the best in your new club.' The club also sent Nunez off with a message. "The Uruguayan's three-year spell with the Reds concludes after he finalised a switch to the Saudi Pro League side today," it read. "Everybody at the club would like to thank Darwin for his contributions and wish him and his family all the best for the future."

Wayne Rooney hits back at Tom Brady: ‘He does not understand football well'

Wayne Rooney has hit back at Tom Brady questioning his work ethic whilst at Birmingham City, saying the NFL legend does not 'understand football well'. Brady, a minority owner of Birmingham, called out Rooney's dedication in the club's Prime Video series Built in Birmingham: Brady and the Blues, where he is heard saying: 'I am a little worried about our head coach's work ethic.' The former New England Patriots quarter-back appointed Rooney in October 2023 before sacking him four months later after he only managed two wins in 15 matches. 'I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game where the days are a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well,' the former Manchester United and England striker said on his new BBC Sounds podcast 'The Wayne Rooney Show' which launches Friday. 'But what he does understand is, he's a hard worker, we know that. Football is not NFL – NFL works for three months a year. Players do need rest as well, so I think he's very unfair, the way he's come out and portrayed that. 'Listen, I respect Tom Brady massively. He's one of the greatest, if not the greatest athletes of all time and Birmingham do look like they're getting it right now, which is good and I think what they have done is got the players out that they needed to get out.' Credit: BBC, The Wayne Rooney Show Birmingham were taken over by Knighthead Capital in June 2023 with Brady buying a stake in the club two months later and controversially sacked manager John Eustace for Rooney despite the club sitting sixth in the Championship. The side quickly plummeted down the table and Rooney was then replaced by Tony Mowbray but had to leave the club after being diagnosed with bowel cancer after eight games. 'When I went into Birmingham, they were in a mess really,' Rooney added. 'Hence the fact that the players weren't really the players who could take the club forward. You had Tony Mowbray, Gary Rowett after me, who also struggled as well.' Under new manager Chris Davies, Birmingham broke the League One record for points last season (111) after they were relegated and have re-entered the Championship with ambitions of reaching the Premier League. 🎶 Pop predicts Premier League 25/26: Good Neighbours (West Ham) 🔮

The new Premier League season is almost upon us and to celebrate, we have enlisted the help of some football-loving pop stars to preview and predict the coming campaign. Click here to read all of the interviews! Today we've got Oli Fox, a West Ham fan and one half of Good Neighbours! Hi Oli. What are you hoping to see from West Ham in the 2025/26 Premier League season? I'm hoping to see just a little more cohesion and consistency in our squad. Last season saw us with a talented squad that didn't know how to be a team, so I hope Potter has drilled that into the boys. What is your hottest take or boldest prediction for West Ham's 2025/26 Premier League season? I hate to say that it's now a 'hot take' but I believe we've recruited in such a way to secure a top half finish? I'd dream of a Europa spot but there's been a lot of decent transfers from our main competition. If you were going to bet your life savings on something definitely happening to West Ham in the 2025/26 season, what would it be? There's a few things that I know will happen. Bowen will get into double figures, the fans will turn on Potter a couple of times, and we will have a decent FA Cup run but get knocked out by a silly club. Other than your own, which team or player are you most excited to watch in the 2025/26 season? I'm actually very interested to see if Man United can do anything with a new look team. I really don't like them as a team but some of the players they've employed like Mbeumo and Cunha deserve a shot at the big time. It's an exciting time for the Premier League. What do you predict will be the first managerial change of the 2025/26 season? Regardless of the team, I'm not sure Ruben Amorim is the right manager for United. I can see him seeing the door mid-season. Who will turn out to be West Ham's signing of the summer? El Hadji Malick Diouf. He's had a steady start in pre-season but I really think he's going to come into his own. We haven't had an athlete like him in wing back for a while, so I'm excited to see how he shapes our attack. Who will finish as the Premier League's Player of the Season? Very tough. I think it'll be Wirtz for Liverpool, but he faces competition from the likes of Mo Salah and other 10s like Cole Palmer. Who will win the Golden Boot? Mo Salah is the obvious shout but I'm going to go with João Pedro as an outside vote. Which club will win the Premier League title? Liverpool. Finally, which three clubs will be relegated? Sunderland, Wolves, Leeds. Good Neighbours' debut album, Blue Sky Mentality is out September 26th. Listen to track Suburbs now.
