Meeting of IATF, IPCC: IHC grants time to govt to submit reply
A single bench of Justice Raja Inaam Ameen Minhas, on Thursday, issued the directions during hearing of a petition filed by Lakki Foundation, a civil society organisation, highlighting the alarming rise in drug addiction among students in Islamabad and seeking the inclusion of anti-narcotics awareness in the academic curriculum of Islamabad's schools and colleges.
During the hearing, the Deputy Attorney General (DAG) appeared before the court and sought more time to submit the reply in this matter as counsel for the petitioner had previously contended that the IATF and Inter-Provincial Coordination Committee on Narcotics Control, constituted under the relevant Act, is one of the most important bodies responsible for regulating and ensuring effective control of narcotics throughout the country but no such meeting of IATF held.
At this, the DAG was directed to submit a report indicating when the last meeting of the Council was held and the decisions taken therein.
Similarly, Shafqat Ghafar, counsel for respondent No 9, had appeared and sought time to file a comprehensive report regarding the inclusion of narcotics related information in the curriculum.
On the last hearing, expressing serious concern that drugs are being delivered to students under the guise of items like pizza and snacks Justice Minhas remarked, 'Children order pizza and receive drugs along with it.' He added, 'Stop all direct deliveries to students. Any school or college that fails to comply should face legal action.'
Justice Minhas directed the authorities to monitor all courier services operating in and around educational institutions and ensure a ban on direct deliveries to students.
Acceding to the plea of DAG, Justice Minhas deferred hearing of the case after Eid holidays directing the authorities to submit the report.

The delegates also expressed a shared resolve to uphold peace, respect national sovereignty, and confront common threats, including terrorism, cyber insecurity, and violent extremism. Participants commended Pakistan's leadership and hospitality, terming the conference an important step in fostering inclusive and forward-looking defence diplomacy. The event underscored Pakistan's continued role as a key player in shaping a secure, interconnected, and cooperative regional security environment, anchored in mutual interests and regional solidarity. The development is seen as yet another sign of the increasing profile of Pakistan both at the regional and international fronts. Observers believe that Pakistan seems to be playing its cards well as it is currently having engagement with all big powers and other regional players. The army chief was in Beijing earlier this week where he held a series of meetings with the top Chinese civil and military leadership. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday held a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, highlighting Pakistan's diplomatic success. Secretary Rubio appreciated Pakistan's continued efforts to seek a mediation between the US and Iran while also lauded Islamabad for preserving regional stability. Foreign Minister Dar told the Atlantic Council later that Pakistan wanted to play a role of bridge between the US and China. He recalled that Pakistan in the past brought these two powers close and was ready to play that role again.

USCENTCOM chief honoured
President Asif Ali Zardari has conferred the prestigious Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) award on General Michael E Kurilla, Commander of the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM), in recognition of his contributions to regional security and the strengthening of bilateral military ties, the military's media wing said on Saturday. According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), President Zardari presented the honour during a formal investiture ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr. General Kurilla was recognised for his "exemplary service and pivotal role in advancing enduring military cooperation" between Pakistan and the United States. "General Kurilla's visionary leadership has been instrumental in fostering mutual understanding, enhancing defence collaboration, and deepening counterterrorism cooperation between the Pakistan Armed Forces and USCENTCOM," the statement read. The award reflects Pakistan's appreciation of General Kurilla's "unwavering support" and highlights the growing depth of the military partnership between the two nations. During his visit, General Kurilla met with senior Pakistani leadership, including President Zardari and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. Discussions focused on regional security, military-to-military engagement, and joint counterterrorism efforts, the statement added. Upon arrival at the Presidency, General Kurilla was presented with a Tri-Services Guard of Honour.

PHC seeks reply on PTI's independents petition
The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has issued a written order in response to a petition filed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, challenging the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) decision to declare Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers as independent members of the provincial assembly. The bench, comprising Justice Ijaz Anwar and Justice Faheem Wali, has sought a response from the Attorney General's Office. According to the written order, the Additional Attorney General has been directed to submit a reply before the next hearing. The court also ordered that this petition be heard alongside other related petitions filed by the Chief Minister and the Speaker of the K-P Assembly. The hearing has been adjourned until August 5. Chief Minister Gandapur filed the constitutional petition against the ECP's decision to strip PTI-affiliated assembly members of their party status and designate them as independents. In a related matter, the Chief Minister and the Speaker have also challenged the oath-taking of women elected on reserved seats at the Governor House, requesting the court to declare the move null and void. In his petition, Gandapur contended that PTI remains a functioning political party and still holds a majority in the K-P Assembly. He argued that the ECP's exclusion of PTI from the legal definition of a political party is unlawful. According to the ECP rules, a party must possess an election symbol to be officially recognized; however, Gandapur pointed out that under the Elections Act, 2017, the presence of an election symbol is not a mandatory criterion for political party recognition. He maintained that where there is a conflict between election rules and the Act, the provisions of the Act must prevail. The petition asserts that the ECP has no authority to declare PTI candidates as independents, and it requests the court to declare PTI lawmakers as legitimate party members. Furthermore, Gandapur urged the court to nullify the allocation of reserved seats, alleging that PTI was unjustly denied its rightful share despite being the majority party. The petition also calls for multiple ECP orders to be declared unlawful, citing deliberate exclusion of PTI in the distribution of reserved seats and allocation to rival parties. Meanwhile, PHC on Saturday deferred further proceedings and transferred the case to another bench regarding a petition filed against the sharing of videos from an event at Women University Swabi on TikTok. During the hearing, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Swabi Nasrullah, Additional Assistant Commissioner Fakhar Alam, and representatives of Women University Swabi appeared before the court. The case was heard by a bench comprising Justice Ejaz Anwar and Justice Faheem Wali. The petition, filed by Advocate Muhammad Hamdan, alleged that videos from a university event, attended by the DC and other officials, were later uploaded to the DC's personal TikTok account. The petitioner argued this act violated several articles of the Constitution and the official Code of Conduct, which may warrant penalties including dismissal from service. Advocate Hamdan contended that the DC's actions were contrary to social and cultural norms, sparking concern among the local community.
