Customs Dept foils attempt to smuggle over 50kg of drugs via air courier

The Star26-06-2025
SEPANG: The Customs Department at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) foiled an attempt to smuggle over 56.81kg of cannabis, estimated to be worth RM5.56mil.
This followed the seizure of the cannabis in operations conducted at several air cargo terminal operators in the KLIA Free Trade Zone last April and May.
KLIA Customs Department director Zulkifli Muhammad said a total of 19 parcels, which were later found to contain substances suspected of being cannabis flowers, were seized during the operations.
"The drugs were believed to be smuggled into the country and then out to various countries using air courier services," he said in a statement on Thursday (June 26).
He said the case was being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides the death penalty or life imprisonment and at least 12 strokes of the cane if not sentenced to death, upon conviction.
In another development, Zulkifli said his team also foiled an attempt to smuggle 1.54 million white cigarettes of various brands, estimated to be worth RM154,000, with unpaid duties and taxes amounting to RM1.03mil, in a raid in Klang, Selangor, last May 9.
He said the contraband was seized from two lorries following information and intelligence gathering by his team.
"The syndicate's modus operandi is to use bonded lorries to distribute the smuggled cigarettes, and the cigarette deliveries are carried out at night to avoid detection by the authorities," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967, which iprovides a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the goods or RM100,000, whichever is higher, and not more than 20 times the value of the goods or RM500,000, whichever is higher, or imprisoned for not more than five years, or both, upon conviction. - Bernama

Psychology consultant loses over RM260,000 to lottery scam syndicate

TANGKAK: A freelance psychological consultant lost over RM260,000 after being duped by a scam syndicate offering fake online lottery cash prizes. Tangkak OCPD Supt Roslan Mohd Talib said the 58-year-old woman was tricked after receiving a WhatsApp message offering lottery winnings worth RM1.5mil, allegedly from a temple. 'The victim then made 20 transactions, transferring a total of RM261,640 of her savings into a mule account between May 31 and Aug 8,' he said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 13). The victim realised she had been deceived after discussing the matter with her sibling and subsequently lodged a police report on Tuesday (Aug 12). The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction. 'The public is advised to remain vigilant and not fall for online lottery cash prize scams. Always verify such offers beforehand to avoid becoming a victim,' said Roslan. He also urged the public to stay updated on the latest scam-related information through the Commercial Crime Investigation Department's social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Those who have fallen victim to scams should contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997 immediately to block the outflow of funds from the suspect's account.

'Why so late?': Syed Saddiq slams authorities' delayed response to student bullying death

He warned that bullying has become systemic, with wardens neglecting their duties, principals turning a blind eye to protect their school's reputation and students normalising such behaviour as a tradition passed down from seniors. 13 Aug 2025 05:44pm Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (left). Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR – Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has slammed the authorities' delayed response in the death of 13-year-old student, the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. The student was suspected to have died due to bullying at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Datuk Mustapha, Papar, Sabah, on July 16. Zara Qairina was reported to have fallen from the third floor of a religious school dormitory building in Papar on July 16, before being pronounced dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital. 'Only after it went viral and there were protests did they have the courage to replace the principal, the warden and the investigating officer and to carry out a post-mortem. "My question is, why so late? Why wait two to three weeks before taking action?' he asked during the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) debate in the Dewan Rakyat. He warned that bullying has become systemic, with wardens neglecting their duties, principals turning a blind eye to protect their school's reputation and students normalising such behaviour as a tradition passed down from seniors. 'Imagine parents wanting to send their children to fully residential schools (SBP); of course they will worry about bullying. "There are also dozens of other bullying cases out there that do not get wide media coverage – what will happen to those victims?' he asked. Syed Saddiq stressed that action should not depend solely on public pressure or media attention. 'If parents can face criminal charges for neglect at home that results in injury to their child, the same standard should apply to school authorities whose negligence leads to serious injury or death. 'The responsibility carried by parents should also be placed on school administrators so that bullying is taken seriously. In short, all forms of support for bullying must stop," he added. He also cautioned that the growing problem could deepen negative perceptions of national schools. 'That is why drastic measures are needed so that primary schools, secondary schools, and national universities remain the top choice for parents. 'Ten years ago, only the T20 group sent their children to private or international schools. Today, even the M40 group, earning only RM3,000 to RM3,500, are willing to spend a quarter of their income on such schools. "This is happening because the negative perception gap towards national schools is getting worse," he said.

Arsonist for Singapore loan shark nabbed after fatal Johor blaze

JOHOR BARU: A Singapore-based loan shark's hired arsonist has been arrested for a house fire that killed a 72-year-old woman in Segamat last month. Johor police chief Commissioner Ab Rahaman Arsad said the 21-year-old suspect and his 19-year-old girlfriend were detained in Subang Jaya, Selangor, about a week after the incident on July 25. Investigations showed the man was paid RM1,000 to hurl a Molotov cocktail at the intended victim's home in a debt-related intimidation attempt. The blaze destroyed five houses and caused an estimated RM1.2 million in losses. The intended victim was not home, but the fire spread to a neighbouring house, trapping and killing the elderly woman. "We seized a car, mobile phones, clothing, face masks, gloves, a lighter, pieces of cloth, and a petrol container believed to have been used in the crime," Ab Rahaman said at a press conference at the Johor police contingent headquarters today. The woman was released on bail as a prosecution witness. Her boyfriend will face 13 charges, including murder without intent under Section 304B of the Penal Code, arson under Section 436, and four counts of criminal intimidation under Section 507. Nine charges will be filed in the Segamat Magistrate's Court tomorrow, with the remainder in Johor Bahru. Police believe the suspect had been active in Johor and Selangor since July, targeting debtors on behalf of the syndicate, which is based in Singapore but operates locally.
