Hannah: No official target, but perform your best in Paris

PUTRAJAYA: No official target has been set for the national shuttlers at the World Championships in Paris next week, but those under the Road to Gold (RTG) programme will still be monitored. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, who is also the RTG chairman, said that while the world meet is not part of the players' key performance index (KPI), they are still expected to perform as the government has invested significantly in them. Of the 13 players bound for Paris, six are in the RTG programme – 2022 world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun (men's doubles), Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah (women's doubles), Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (mixed doubles). 'Our KPI is not tied to the World Championships but to world rankings. For RTG athletes, we have two years to evaluate their rankings, and they are being monitored by Datuk Dr. Ramlan Abdul Aziz and P. Vellapandian from the RTG committee. 'My main concern is the packed badminton calendar. I worry they may suffer from fatigue as they are constantly competing. For the RTG shuttlers, I always pray they remain injury-free because injuries would make things very difficult. 'We are monitoring them closely because whatever they need has already been provided. The RTG shuttlers lack nothing,' said Hannah. She also reminded the players not to focus too much on potential rewards, stressing that winning medals must come first. 'When competing, don't think too much about rewards. Even if there are none, I believe they will still give their best because the government has already invested heavily in them,' she added. When Aaron-Wooi Yik created history by clinching the world title in 2022, they received RM300,000 in incentives from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

Kuching dart competition unites generations in National Month celebration

THE War's 15 Petrajaya Dart Club has added a unique touch to National Month celebrations for nine years with its annual dart competition. Ahmad Tarmizi Hamdi, the club's chairman, shared that the event began in 2017 and has since become a staple in August. He explained that the competition was designed to diversify National Month activities while engaging all age groups. 'It also serves as a medium to foster unity compared to the conventional events before this,' he said. The Merdeka Double Dart Challenge 2025 finals drew over 150 participants in Kuching yesterday. Initially, the competition was limited to local clubs and small communities before expanding with support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Sports clubs from Kuching, Sibu, Mukah, and Miri also contributed through promotions and logistics. This year's event saw participants ranging from 12 to 78 years old, highlighting darts' intergenerational appeal. Ahmad Tarmizi noted that the competition helps promote darts beyond Kuching to other districts. 'Prizes and entry fees were also adjusted to encourage more participants,' he added. Jaafar Bujang, 78, a retired Customs officer, praised darts for sharpening focus and maintaining health. Firash Zafran Majid, 12, expressed excitement about testing his skills in his first major competition. Team X 11 claimed the Gold Doubles title, winning RM2,000, while 13 Dart Madshot triumphed in the Silver Doubles category. - Bernama

Amirudin (second left) after the presentation of appointment letters under the Selangor Sukma contingent's 'Bapa Angkat' (Foster Father) programme. — LOW BOON TAT/The Star Selangor government will increase cash incentives by RM2,000 for its athletes who win at next year's Malaysia Games (Sukma), if the state emerges as overall champions. Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said individual gold medallists would receive RM12,000, while athletes in team events with fewer than three players would get RM7,000 each. For teams with more than three members, each athlete would be awarded RM5,000 for a gold medal. 'The amount could still go up as there is still a year to go,' said the Mentri Besar. He was speaking to reporters after launching the 'Road To Champions 2026' programme at Bangunan Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in Shah Alam on Saturday. The programme aims to ensure Selangor takes the overall title at Sukma 2026, which will be hosted by the state. 'This is being done through a structured approach that covers athlete development, strengthening coaching capacity and comprehensive support from all stakeholders,' said Amirudin. During the event, Seri Serdang assemblyman Abbas Salimmi Che Adzmi@Azmi was appointed as contingent head, while Selangor Deputy State Secretary (Development) Datuk Johary Anuar was made deputy contingent head. The event also featured the presentation of appointment letters for the Selangor Sukma contingent's 'Bapa Angkat' (Foster Father) programme. 'Through this programme, each state sports association will receive moral, logistical and financial support from 'adoptive fathers'. 'They include Selangor assemblymen and representatives from local authorities, district and land offices and several state-linked companies (GLCs),' Amirudin said. In the last Sukma, Selangor placed third with 56 gold, 64 silver and 61 bronze medals. The state last won the overall title at the 18th Sukma in 2016, held in Sarawak.
