Jase Summy adds Western Amateur, the 'biggest win of my life,' to Walker Cup resumé

NBC Sports17 hours ago
Few players, if any, have had better summers than Ethan Fang. The Oklahoma State standout helped the Cowboys to an NCAA Championship in late May before flying across the pond and becoming the first American to win the British Amateur in nearly 20 years. After narrowly missing the cut at The Open, Fang co-medaled at this week's Western Amateur before storming through to the final with convincing wins over Huge Le Goff and Jacob Modleski, plus a hard-fought 3-and-1 result against Ben James.
Like James, Fang is already on the U.S. Walker Cup team that will compete at Cypress Point this September. So, too, are Jackson Koivun, Michael La Sasso and Preston Stout, which leaves five spots still up for grabs.
But on Saturday afternoon at Skokie Country Club, Jase Summy entered the chat.
Summy, a rising senior at Oklahoma, dominated Fang, 6 and 5, to win the 123rd edition of the Western Amateur and tie the championship record for largest margin of victory in a final, equaling 6-and-5 marks by Phelps B. Hoyt (1901 over Bruce D. Smith) and John Klauk (2002 over Adam Rubinson).
'This is the biggest win of my life – by far,' Summy said. 'I knew my game was there, but I hadn't quite broken through. Today, I did.'
Fang, ranked third in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, took just one hole against Summy, whom he grew up playing junior golf against in Texas. Fresh off a 19-hole victory over Florida's Zack Swanwick, Summy won five of the last six to end things before the 14th hole.
'It was a good week,' Fang said. 'Stroke play went great, and I was proud to co-medal. I did my best to stay focused, but I got a little tired and a little loose near the end. It didn't go my way, but that's golf.'
Summy is projected to rise to seventh in the world, and with a T-3 at the Southern Amateur and T-12 at the Northeast Amateur this summer following a junior season that included a win and six other top-10s, he should feel confident about getting the call for Cypress. The final five Walker Cuppers are named after the U.S. Amateur, which begins a week from Monday at Olympic Club in San Francisco.
With his win, Summy also received a sponsor exemption into next summer's NV5 Invitational, the Korn Ferry Tour stop outside of Chicago.
'This was a long, tough week,' Summy added. 'I prepared the right way, mentally and physically. I know I'm on the right path.'

Dez Bryant hits back at Jerry Jones after getting dragged into Micah Parsons saga: ‘We can have story time'

Dez Bryant and Roc Nation are calling out Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for dragging them into the messy Micah Parsons negotiations. Bryant called out Jones for being 'disrespectful' in comments made Saturday rehashing negotiations between the former wide receiver and the team's front office in 2015. 'Jerry Jones I don't think it's smart to mention my name,' Bryant posted Saturday on X. 'I kept quiet about a lot of unfair s–t…We can have story time if that's what we are doing. 3 Dez Bryant is pictured during a December 2017 game for the Cowboys. 'Do not mention my name about s–t.' Jones had brought up Bryant to reporters Saturday while being questioned about the recent trade request by Parsons, the Cowboys' four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher who had posted Friday on X that 'I no longer want to be here' and 'no longer want to be held to close door negotiations without my agent present.' When asked about the latter contention, the 82-year-old Jones told reporters, 'When we have a problem with the player, the agent is nowhere to be found.' Jones then brought up negotiations a decade ago with Bryant and Roc Nation Sports, the agency run by Jay-Z. 'Jay-Z said that Dez would make all meetings. Jay-Z and I negotiated the contract, spent hours,' Jones said. 'He said, 'Anybody in my organization is on time.' He said, 'My office used to be on the street corner, and I've always been early. So, they will be on time.' 3 Micah Parsons is pictured at Cowboys training camp on July 22. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect 'And what did I say? I said, 'I'm going to call you [if I have a problem].' He quit taking my call.' Bryant landed a five-year deal worth $70 million before the 2015 NFL season, but he was released in 2018. Roc Nation also issued a statement Saturday on X refuting Jones' claims. 'In 2015, at the 21 Club, on a napkin, Jerry Jones, Juan Perez, Shawn 'Jay-Z' Carter and Stephen Jones negotiated a five-year, $70 million deal, which included a $45 million guarantee and a $20 million signing bonus for Dez Bryant,' the post read. 'At the time, it was the second-largest contract for a wide receiver in NFL history. The claim that Mr. Carter or Roc Nation representatives did not return a call from Jerry Jones is not only a false statement, but it's also a comical one.'

Chet Holmgren meets Oklahoma legend Adrian Peterson

Enjoying his downtime, Chet Holmgren went on another side quest that involved a cross-sport interaction every Oklahoma sports fan loved. The calendar has flipped to August, which means the NBA is in its driest part of the year. Everybody around the league is on vacation for the next couple of months before the 2025-26 season starts. Holmgren traveled to the 2025 Panini VIP Party over the weekend. Panini America hosted the event. The company is known for selling sports trading cards, memorabilia and autographed merchandise. It includes about every collegiate and pro sports league you can imagine. At the event, athletes from across the globe attended. Holmgren took to social media to post some of the photos he had taken of players he grew up watching. One included Oklahoma and NFL legend Adrian Peterson. The future Hall-of-Famer is one of the greatest running backs ever. Peterson attended Oklahoma for three college seasons from 2004-06. He then spent nearly a decade with the Minnesota Vikings, where he carved out one of the greatest careers. He was a perennial Pro Bowl player and won the 2012 MVP award. Considering Holmgren grew up in Minnesota, it was a moment where the 23-year-old was likely starstruck. Both also have obvious ties to Oklahoma. In the seven-footer's case, he helped the Thunder win their first NBA championship this past June. Always fun to see the type of adventures NBA players go through when they have free time. So much of their lives is fixated on basketball. For Holmgren, his free time includes linking up with several other all-time athletes from various sports at a trading card company event.
