Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani killed in Air India flight crash at Ahmedabad
AHMEDABAD: Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was killed in the Air India flight crash near Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon.
The London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner, operating as flight AI 171, crashed in a residential area near Meghani Nagar just minutes after departing from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1.38 pm.
Rupani was travelling in Business Class (Z category).
Sources close to the former Chief Minister informed about his plans to bring back his wife, Anjali Rupani, from London.
Rupani, 68, was CM for two terms from August 7, 2016 to September 11, 2021, after winning the Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections from Rajkot West seat.
The tragic fate of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, now the second to perish in an air disaster after Balwantrai Mehta in 1965 when his aircraft was shot down during the India‑Pakistan war has brought back memories of that earlier, sorrowful incident.

Shah in Lucknow today to give job letters to cops in UP's biggest-ever hiring drive
Lucknow: In a first, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will give appointment letters to newly recruited constables of the UP Police in a grand ceremony in the state capital on Sunday. As many as 60,244 cops were recruited by UP Police, marking the completion of the largest single police recruitment drive ever undertaken by any state police in the country. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took stock of preparations at Sector 18 of Lucknow's Vrindavan Yojana on Saturday. "Recruits from all 75 districts of the state will gather for the large-scale programme. The recruitment process was completed under Rajeev Krishna as the director of the UPPRPB after the removal of the previous director, Renuka Mishra, following a question paper leak. The state govt cancelled the written examination on February 24 and directed that it be re-conducted within six months. The written examination was then conducted in August 2024. Additional forces from adjoining districts Gonda, Kanpur, and Barabanki have already been stationed in Lucknow police lines along with senior officers. CRPF officer killed in IED blast near Jharkhand border
1 2 3 4 Rourkela/Ranchi: An assistant sub-inspector of CRPF was killed in an IED explosion during an area domination exercise in Sundargarh district near the border with Jharkhand early on Saturday. The deceased, Satyaban Kumar Singh (34) from Kishinagar, Uttar Pradesh, was critically injured when the IED, suspected to have been planted by Maoists, detonated around 6 am at Silikuta near Banko Langalakata in Saranda forest. Singh, who was posted with CRPF's 134 Battalion, died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Rourkela. The operation was launched following intelligence inputs about Maoist movement in the area. A joint team of CRPF and special operations group (SOG) was conducting the operation when the IED blast took place. "A case has been registered at K Balang police station and investigation has started," said Nitesh Wadhwani, SP (Rourkela). DIG (western range), Brijesh Kumar Rai, visited the site following the incident. The area has been under heightened security following the looting of around 5 tonnes of explosives by Maoists from the Banko stone quarry on May 27. Security forces have since then recovered about four tonnes of the stolen explosives. On May 30, a security personnel was injured in a landmine explosion during a joint search operation, while a villager sustained injuries in a similar incident the following day. Singh's body was airlifted to Ranchi, where he was accorded a guard of honour before being handed over to his family members. Jharkhand governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, chief minister Hemant Soren and senior officials on Saturday laid wreaths on the mortal remains of martyred CRPF officer in Ranchi. Speaking to the media, Gangwar said it was distressing to learn about the incident. "The state govt is trying to prevent such occurrences," he said. Soren said anti-Maoist operations are going on in Jharkhand and neighbouring states and police have achieved successes in several of them. "The incident leading to Singh's martyrdom is heartbreaking.
