Carnevale di Ivrea, Europe's most underrated ‘food fight,' isn't for the weak

The sweet smell of citrus hangs heavy in the air, and while that might bring memories of warmth and sunshine to mind for many, for Ivreans, it conjures up visions of mayhem, soaring oranges, and the camaraderie of friends.
Every Carnival season, the charming Italian village of Ivrea, tucked in the foothills of the Alps, becomes a battleground. The city's population swells by the thousands, comprised of visitors and the infamous aranceri (orange-throwers) who are here for one thing—to wage war with flying fruit.
Eager crowds gather to witness the action as hundreds of citrus projectiles cloud the sky. The Carnevale di Ivrea is a multi-layered blend of history and legend that plays out over four days. Taking place in either February or March, depending on when Lent falls, the festivities are an unforgettable mix of parades, ceremonial fires, regional cuisine, and plenty of vin brulé to fuel the fun.

The folkloric origins of Carnevale di Ivrea
The origins of the Carnevale di Ivrea are a murky mixture of legend and history. Orange throwers battle in the name of Violetta, a medieval miller's daughter and folkloric protagonist. According to organizers at the Fondazione dello Storico Carnevale di Ivrea, local lore states that a notorious tyrant issued a prima nocta, the right to a bride's bed, on Violetta's wedding night. Rather than succumb to his evil ways, she proceeded to get the feudal lord drunk, severed his head while he slept, and presented it triumphantly to the townspeople, inciting a revolt.

Whether the rebellion against the tyrant and the medieval heroine was fact or fiction, Ivreans celebrate it all the same—even electing a modern-day Violetta each year. Presented to the town on Carnival Saturday, she'll make appearances throughout the festivities, throwing candy in parades and watching over the celebrations. However, customs have evolved over the centuries, with most of the festival's historic elements and traditions added later, including lobbing oranges, which didn't begin until after WWII.
'Generally speaking, the medieval origins claimed for such festivals as this are legendary and lack medieval documentation; many are later inventions…' says Professor Daniel Bornstein, who specializes in the religious culture of medieval Italy at the Washington University of Saint Louis.
While the tale of Violetta might be a myth, Bornstein does add that Ivrea's historic brawls could be rooted in fact. 'There were certainly occasional riots and factional street fighting in medieval cities, with whatever lay at hand used as a weapon.'
Battle of the Oranges
For three days, from Carnival Sunday to Shrove Tuesday, the aranceri will fight to the last peel, starting at 2 p.m. each day. Known formally as the Battle of the Oranges, or Battaglio delle Arance in Italian, these friendly conflicts occur in designated piazzas and streets throughout the city.
Nine groups of aranceri on foot, distinguished by their colorful uniforms and unique emblems, fling oranges one by one at horse-drawn carriages full of armored men who represent the tyrant and his guardsmen. Sourced from Sicily and other regions of Southern Italy, it's estimated that over 900 tons of oranges will be thrown throughout the festival.

Unlike La Tomatina and its soft and squishy tomatoes, the oranges at Carnevale di Ivrea pack a meaner punch. Revelers will undoubtedly walk away with bloody noses, sometimes worse, but it's all a part of the fun. 'As painful as it is (and it really hurts), I am aware of what I'm doing and how to protect myself in unpleasant situations,' says local photographer Alessio Ferreri, who has been attending the Carnevale di Ivrea since he was just three years old.
But he digresses, 'There are also many places to stay safe and fully enjoy the show.' Spectators watch from balconies, behind nets, and anywhere else that provides a safe haven to witness the scene unfold—and keep them protected from a rogue orange. Donning a crimson Phrygian cap, representing Ivrea's freedom from tyranny, will help the aranceri know you aren't a target.
By the end of the third day of battle, a thick, ochre paste of orange peel and pulp carpeted Ivrea's medieval squares and cobblestoned lanes. Like the city itself, the aranceri will smell like citrus for days, if not weeks, something that Milanese photojournalist Vittorio Sciosia remembers well 'The smell of oranges that spreads through the city's air, lingers for days even after the event ends. But not only that, the scent stays on you for days, even after taking a shower,' he says.
But the Carnevale di Ivrea isn't just a booze-fueled, slightly masochistic homage to a medieval heroine—it's become a part of Ivrean identity. 'While the orange throwing is visually stunning, especially when the light filters through the squares…the intensity in some of the gazes I've captured, across all ages, is unforgettable,' says Ferreri. 'People truly care about the Carnevale, about experiencing it fully, and passing down this passion.'

Symbolic Carnevale di Ivrea rituals and traditions
Recognized as an 'Italian event of international importance' by the Prime Minister of Italy, the Carnevale di Ivrea is nothing without its steadfast traditions and symbolic celebrations. While all eyes are on the Battle of the Oranges, multiple other events are taking place over the festival's four main days, from the Calzata del Beretto on Fat Thursday, when visitors are formally asked to don their Phrygian caps (beretto phrygio), to noshing on cod and polenta in Piazza Lamarmora on Ash Wednesday.

As the carnival comes to a close, festival-goers and aranceri alike gather in Ivrea's medieval squares for the burning of the scarli, a towering pole covered in heather and juniper and crowned with an Italian flag. Children who represent Ivrea's parishes (known as the Abba) set fire to individual scarlo (singular scarli) in three separate piazzas, beckoning everyone to lay down their oranges and come together in peace.
'People gather around. There's a sense of community in the air, and in the coolness of the night, the fire warms us all together,' says Ferreri, describing the burning of the scarli as the festival's most important tradition.
'Depending on how the scarlo burns and falls, it's seen as a sign of good or bad luck for the coming year. It's a beautiful moment to be together, warmed by a living flame in the middle of Ivrea's squares on a cold night.'
Even the festival's final words tell how deeply these annual traditions are felt. 'Arvedse a giobia a 'n bot,' a local dialect which translates to 'We'll see each other on Thursday at one,' is murmured by all as they take the final steps of the Funerary March, the Carnevale di Ivrea's closing ceremony, already anticipating next year's fun.

The 25-year-old rose to international fame during the pandemic without ever saying a word in his videos, which would show him reacting to absurdly complicated 'life hacks." He has over 162 million followers on TikTok alone. The Senegal-born influencer moved to Italy when he was an infant with his working class parents and has Italian citizenship. His internet fame quickly evolved. He signed a multi-year partnership with designer brand Hugo Boss in 2022. In January, he was appointed as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.

‘Walking Alongside' American Designer Claire McCardell in New Book

'Good fashion earns its right to be remembered.' Those words weren't just spoken by Claire McCardell, but she lived up to them too. Elizabeth Evitts Dickinson's new book, 'Claire McCardell: The Designer Who Set Women Free,' spells that out again and again. Progressive as a working woman, McCardell helped to pioneer American fashion, after studying at Parsons and living in Paris for a stretch. Her specialty was practical, stylish, affordable clothes that women could move through their days. McCardell's breakthrough look in 1938 was the Monastic dress, which flattered a range of body types. She also made leotards popular. As McCardell told Betty Friedan in her magazine writing days, 'You have to design for the lives American women lead today.' While many associate sportswear with the second generations designers like Calvin Klein, Halston and Donna Karan, the author noted how McCardell forged the path. Although her label was not carried forward after her death in 1958 at the age of 52, Dickinson said the lack of the magnitude of her influence was more due to 'the societal clapback about women being at the forefront of the industry. We've forgotten a lot of those women's names unfairly,' she said. Dickinson said, 'She never wanted to be out of the trenches. She enjoyed the work. Even when she was famous enough, well-off enough and partner in her firm, it was suggested that she take a step back, [but] that never appealed to her. She really was an inventor and an artist.' As much about McCardell's life as it is about her career, the Simon & Schuster biography will be released June 17. Dickinson will speak Thursday at a ticketed event at the New York Historical, which will be followed by a book launch at the Maryland Center for History and Culture on June 17 and an appearance at the Frenchtown Bookshop in Frenchtown, N.J., on June 24. Reading McCardell's writing, transcribing McCardell's archival letters and 'triangulating' them to cultural events and geographic locations enabled Dickinson to hear her voice and visualize her life at that time. Esoteric as that might sound, the author manages to relay McCardell's upbringing, career, marriage and pursuits with historical footnotes and entertaining asides. 'I wanted it to feel like you were walking alongside McCardell and not like you were spending time with a biographer telling you about her.' Pragmatism was paramount to all that she did. Dickinson said, 'She always had the lived experience of the woman in mind so that everything she was designing had a reason. She really wanted to be remembered for making clothes that changed people's lives and helped women to be more autonomous, ambitious, comfortable and confident.' Those reasons were aplenty such as creating a detachable hood to replace the hassle of traveling on an airplane with a hat, designing pockets to stash fidgety hands when speaking to her boss and generously cut dresses to allow subway riders to grab a straphanger without tearing her clothes. 'She was always thinking about the reality of living and moving through the world as a woman,' Dickinson said. While working at what is now known as the Maryland Center for History and Culture in the late 1990s, the author's first encounter with the designer was through an exhibition. Fresh out of college with no idea of who McCardell was or that she was one of the reasons behind much of what hangs in our closets, Dickinson said, 'I knew very little about the sportswear movement, and the women like Claire, who in the 1920s and '30s, were really building American fashion. I remember standing there in a really unfortunate suit that I'd been talked into buying by a salesperson. We've all been there. It doesn't fit. It's not comfortable. The color is trendy, but it's not good on you. And it didn't have pockets,' she recalled. 'I remember thinking, 'How did we go backward?'' Moreover, Dickinson questioned how the industry appears to have slid back again with men being installed as the creative directors of luxury houses — including Dior, Chanel and Gucci. But back to McCardell. What hooked the author was how McCardell's show made her question what women are expected to wear, why that is the case and who is dictating those mandates. 'Whose gaze are we prioritizing? Claire always prioritized the female gaze, the wearer,' Dickinson said. The fact that women were 'pretty much required' to wear wool swim stockings on public beaches in the 1920s to avoid the seeming indecency of bare legs, was news to the author. McCardell's daringness, as a teenager, to take her swim stockings off to take a plunge endeared her to the author. 'I loved that she was trying to push back on things that she thought were unreasonable,' Dickinson said. Another revelation in her research was just how difficult it was for a young single woman to maneuver her way around New York City without a male escort. 'I was fascinated to learn how art clubs and other places [like the Fashion Group International] emerged to support women like Claire and how Claire, in turn, tried to help other women throughout her career to find their footing in the city and in the industry,' she said. Readers will learn how the designer was at the nexus of a constellation of a lot of extraordinary women and entrepreneurs [like Elizabeth Hawes, Eleanor Lambert and Bonnie Cashin]. 'This really is the story of a group of women working together to build an industry,' Dickinson said. 'She was often years ahead of her time. She invented separates in 1934 and she kept at it, so that by the 1940s she got them out there. As one person I interviewed said, 'She is one of the most under appreciated, but important designers of the 20th century.' McCardell also approached her collection tactically. So much so that she once deconstructed a Vionnet dress that she bought at a Paris sample sale in the 1920s to get a better understanding of how it was made. That was all the more telling, given that American design students at that time were learning more about how to draw clothes than how they worked, Dickinson said. McCardell's personal archives include reams of letters from not just fans, the famous and customers. Amongst them was a lengthy handwritten one in which the writer said a McCardell suit failed her during an Italian vacation that she had saved up to go on for years. Dickinson said, 'I think she saved it to remind herself, who she worked for. She surely went back to [review] the design, to the manufacturer and to the fabric to figure out how to fix it.' When World War II called for rationing, McCardell made the most of every scrap of fabric for her designs, and used innovative aspects like mattress ticking and parachute materials that were left over from the military, Dickinson noted. At the request of Harper's Bazaar's editors Diana Vreeland and Carmel Snow, she created a design for American women whose lives had been upended with some pitching in with the war effort while also running their households. The 'Popover' dress in durable cotton that McCardell came up with had an oven mitt attached at the waist. More than 50,000 units of the New York made frock were sold in 1942. The designer was also a witness to history, having been one of the last designers to leave Paris before it fell to German troops. She also connected with leaders in the arts like Ernest Hemingway, and the actress Joan Crawford, who 'begged' the designer in letters to make clothes for her. And the artist Georgia O'Keefe wore her clothes. At heart, McCardell was an artist and an inventor, according to the author. To that end, the designer once said, 'I've always designed things I needed myself. It just turns out that other people need them too.' (NewsNation) — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reportedly detained the most-followed creator on TikTok on Friday. Khaby Lame, whose full name is Seringe Khabane Lame, is an Italian-Senegalese influencer. He was detained for immigration violations at the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to USA Today. Sly Stone, leader of funk revolutionaries Sly and the Family Stone, dies at 82 Lame, 25, is a current citizen of Italy and reportedly 'overstayed the terms of his visa,' ICE reported. ICE allegedly gave Lame the option to depart the country voluntarily after he was detained, and Lame chose to leave the U.S. Lame became famous during the COVID-19 pandemic when he was laid off from his job in Italy. He uses the hashtag 'learnfromkhaby' on most of his videos, and he follows along as another creator talks about a complicated hack. Once he watches the 'hack,' he shows himself easily completing it, typically without saying anything. Lame is reportedly an ambassador for the men's clothing company Boss. He is also an ambassador for Binance and UNICEF. Lame moved from Senegal to Italy as a baby, but as The Associated Press reported, he didn't gain Italian citizenship until 2022. In 2024, he was named one of People's Creators of the Year. He told the publication at the time, 'Before TikTok, I was working in a factory. I had a lot of different jobs. I was helping support my family — three little brothers, one older brother and my parents. Then my world changed completely. It's a whole different life now.' Lame's detainment is one small part of President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown.
