Death of Drag Race star The Vivienne was misadventure, rules coroner

Yahoo30-06-2025
Popular drag queen performer The Vivienne's death was from misadventure after suffering cardio respiratory arrest after taking ketamine, a coroner has ruled.
James Lee Williams, 32, was found in the bath by a neighbour at their home in Chorlton-by-Backford, Cheshire, on Sunday January 5.
The last time anyone had contact with them was on the previous Friday evening, when their friend, Bobby Musker, told Warrington Coroner's Court it was evident the entertainer had taken ketamine.
The inquest into their death heard that five drug snap bags were found in the property, including in a bedroom draw and a bin in the bathroom.
Although the performer had struggled with drugs in the past, Williams' family told the hearing they should not be remembered for their use of ketamine and that drugs did not define the person they were.
Friends and family had no worries about Williams' mental health, the hearing was told, and the performer was looking forward to future roles on TV and in the theatre, although did 'occasionally' take ketamine.
Jacqueline Devonish, senior coroner for Cheshire, concluding the inquest, said: 'The medical cause of death is cardio-respiratory arrest due to ketamine use.
'The conclusion, on the balance of probabilities, I'm satisfied that James Williams' death was a misadventure, he took ketamine but he did not intend to take his own life.'
Williams, who was born in St Asaph, North Wales, was the winner of the first series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK and years later admitted having been a drug addict.
An officer of the coroner's court told media that Williams' family would like the media to use 'they/them' pronouns for their loved one.
The coroner said Williams had probably died in the bath on the Friday evening after taking ketamine, two days before his body was discovered by a neighbour after concerns were raised about a lack of contact.
She added: 'However the toxicology results indicate that the concentration found in the post-mortem, despite two days having lapsed, was still fairly high, which suggests he may have reached a fatal level on the Friday, I would describe that concentration as acute.
'He made a name for himself in the performing arts as a drag artiste, known as The Vivienne.
'He was very bold in the pursuit of all his dreams and used his platform to make a difference.'
The inquest heard medical records showed Williams had struggled with drug use in the past, including with the use of ketamine, cocaine and alcohol but did stop taking drugs for a number of years and before his death he did not routinely take ketamine.
At the time of his death, Williams was in the Christmas break from performing in Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang, finishing in Blackpool on December 30 before the show's tour began again in March.
Earlier, Bobby Musker described himself as Williams' best friend, who he had known for 16 years, first working as drag queens in Liverpool.
Mr Musker said he was aware his friend used ketamine, but he had gone 'years' not using the drug – but would occasionally take the substance.
He said: 'I knew he was not sober. He didn't want to be taking it. He wasn't taking it constantly.
'He struggled with his sobriety but he really tried his hardest not to do it. It was not a constant thing.'
Mr Musker said he was the last to see Williams in a video call around 8.30pm on the Friday evening before his body was found on the following Sunday.
He added: 'I could tell when he was on it. He mentioned he had been to Liverpool in an Uber. I knew that he had been to get ketamine.'
Mr Musker said he understood his friend planned to get a takeaway meal and have a bath.
But he alerted Williams' neighbour, Janine Godbold, to go round to his house around lunchtime on Sunday, after concern over a lack of contact.
Ms Godbold, told the court she became good friends with Williams after the entertainer moved to the village where she lived and they became near neighbours.
She had keys to Williams' home, Swallow Barn, and went with her son Ryan, letting herself in.
Ms Godbold broke down in tears as she told the court she found Williams in the bath.
'He just looked like he was sleeping, I ran over to him and put my hand under his head,' she said.
'I kept hold of him, I kept talking to him.'
Paramedic Daniel Davies told the hearing he was called to the house but it was quickly apparent there was no pulse and no medical intervention could help.
Det Sgt Thomas Philpotts, from Cheshire Police, said he was called to the scene due to the 'unusual' circumstances.
When officers searched the house, Mr Philpotts said, 'several' snap bags which he believed had contained drugs were found in the bathroom bin and in a draw.
The officer said he concluded there was nothing suspicious and no suggestion of a third-party involvement, and it was likely Williams had died after a medical episode in the bath, possibly brought on by drug use.
A report from toxicologist Dr Kerry Taylor said tests showed a relatively high level of ketamine, but not at a level normally causing death.
However, the drug can cause drowsiness, seizures and heart stimulation and the concentration may have dissipated over time.
Dr David Butterworth, the pathologist who carried out the post-mortem, said there was no evidence of drowning.
His report said the use of ketamine could have contributed to toxicity and death, and the amounts found in Williams' body could have been higher when he was alive than the levels found after death due to the passage of time.
Dr Butterworth concluded: 'This man has died form the effects of cardio respiratory arrest due to the use of ketamine.'
His father, Lee Williams, told the hearing: 'He was just an outgoing character who was full of life, he just wanted to make people laugh.
'He achieved his goals. He had future goals he wanted to achieve. Along the way he always wanted to try to help his community, which he did and try to help other drag queens.
'He was always available. He never turned anybody down. He never turned his back on anybody. He never said no.
'He loved the stage, that's where he saw the rest of his career being, on the stage, in the theatre. 'That's what he loved to do.'

HBO's HARRY POTTER Series Reveals First Look at the Weasley Family with New Cast Announcement — GeekTyrant

The Weasleys are officially stepping into the spotlight in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series remake, and the magical family is already looking pretty great. While we've seen a steady stream of casting news for Hogwarts students, the red-headed wizarding clan is now starting to take shape, and we have a first look. We already knew that Alastair Stout would be playing Ron Weasley, Harry's loyal best friend, and Katherine Parkinson would take on the role of Molly Weasley, the loving matriarch. Now HBO has unveiled the young actors playing four more of Ron's siblings. Stepping into the roles of the mischievous twins Fred and George are real-life brothers Tristan and Gabriel Harland, while Ruari Spooner has been cast as the rule-abiding Percy Weasley. The youngest sibling, Ginny, the only daughter in the family, will be played by Gracie Cochrane. HBO revealed the cast with a fun selfie featuring the four newcomers alongside Stout, shared on Instagram. The Weasley family plays a major role in the Harry Potter universe, and since HBO is aiming for a more faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling 's books, their presence will be even more significant. These newly announced characters all appear in the first book, but there are still a few Weasleys left to cast. Arthur Weasley, the quirky and loveable patriarch, hasn't been revealed yet, but since he becomes a major player starting with the second book, he'll need to be cast soon, likely before production begins on Season 2. There's also Charlie Weasley, who might at least get a name-drop this season. In the book, Charlie plays a part in helping smuggle the baby dragon Norbert out of Hogwarts, a scene the films trimmed down, but one that the series now has time to explore more fully. Charlie doesn't physically appear until the fourth book, so his casting could wait unless HBO wants to show photos of him in the Weasley household. That same question goes for Bill Weasley, who becomes a bigger part of the story beginning in Goblet of Fire and shows up consistently through to the end. Whether the series casts him and Charlie early on just for background family moments, like Molly's magical 'grandfather clock', is still up in the air. In the movies, the clock featured photos of each family member, but the show might take a simpler route with names instead. For now, we've got a solid Weasley lineup to start the journey with Harry. HBO's Harry Potter series is currently filming and is slated to premiere sometime in early 2027.

Missing Texas woman found living among lost ‘African' tribe in Scotland

A Texas woman reported missing by her family has been found living among a lost 'African' tribe in a Scottish forest. Texas native Kaura Taylor has been found with the Kingdom of Kubala, a group living in a forest in Jedburgh, about 41 miles south of Edinburgh, that is trying to reclaim land stolen from their ancestors, UK-based media group SWNS reported. The group is led by King Atehene, 36, who was once an opera singer under the name Kofi Offeh, his wife, Queen Nandi, and their handmaiden Taylor, who now goes by Asnat, according to the outlet. 'To the U.K. authorities, obviously I am not missing,' she said in a video message from the group. 'Leave me alone. I am an adult, not a helpless child.' It's unclear when Taylor was reported missing or why her family was unaware of her location. The group said they've been served eviction notices and been targeted in an attack that involved someone setting one of their tents on fire. While they 'don't recognize local laws,' they say they only follow the rules of their God, who is named Yahowah, according to the outlet. 'We live a very simple life of returning to innocence,' King Atehene told the outlet. 'We connect to nature. We connect to the trees around us. We get grounded every morning. We bathe in the springwater. We are living a simple life of relying daily on the creator for food, shelter and clothing. We live in a tent without walls, but we are not afraid of anyone, for we have the protection of the creator, Yahowah.' According to King Atehene, Great Britain says it is tolerant — but not toward his group, which has 'suffered trials and tribulations at the hands of authorities, who do not understand or tolerate,' he told the outlet. The Kingdom of Kubala claims they are a lost tribe of Hebrews, and that their King descended from David the Messiah, according to the outlet. They say their ancestors were ostracized when Queen Elizabeth I deported native black Jacobites. The group now hopes to bring other 'lost tribes' back after 400 years, according to the report. 'We follow the laws of the creator, everything belongs to the ones who made it,' King Atehene added. 'We do not believe that any authority owns the land. The earth belongs to the father. We do not know about any eviction. All we know is that we are here to stay and establish our authority and power, just like our ancestors did.' He continued: 'The prophecy said, 'after 400 years, when my ancestors are destroyed from the land of Scotland, from the land of Great Britain, they will go into captivity and lose their identity.'' 'But after 400 years, I will come and bring them back to the land of promise. I am following the ancestral call and the call of the gods. The calling from our creator to embark on this journey, is the most important thing in our life. It is a journey of hope — a pilgrimage.' His wife, Queen Nandi, a 43-year-old born Jean Gasho, wrote on social media that the group had 'returned to claim Scotland as our homeland, a land stolen by Elizabeth the first 400 years ago when she deported all black people from Scotland and England, who were not Africans but natives of the land.' 'Jacobites were black, from their ancestor Jacob, Yacobho, a black man. According to our Prophet Atehene, Jerusalem is in Scotland, and that he is the seed and offspring of David, the Messiah. The old world is going, the Second Exodus has begun, only those who live off grid, in Tabernacles will be saved, as we enter the Millennium Kingdom of Kubala, and the world is left behind,' she continued, according to the outlet. It was not immediately clear how many people are part of the Kingdom of Kubala and how many are currently living in the forest in Jedburgh. Meanwhile, Scottish Borders Council says it is 'working with Police Scotland' to manage the situation. 'This has included the provision of advice and information about housing options and other support services,' a spokesperson told SWNS. Solve the daily Crossword
