Two State High students to present 'Belt Buddy' project for a chance to win $6,000 prize
CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Two State College Area High School students came up with an idea to encourage drivers to use seatbelts more, and now they are competing for a $6,000 prize.
The competition is through the PennDOT Innovations Challenge. This year, students were asked to develop a cost-effective, innovative solution to help PennDOT more effectively increase motorist awareness of seat belt safety. Kali Nicolas and Maya Toyokawa submitted their idea called 'Belt Buddy.' This is proposed as a mobile app that tracks your seatbelt usage. The app would detect seat belt chimes to determine if the occupants are belted in.
'We want to encourage drivers to get people that are in their car as well as passengers to wear their seat belts more,' Toyokawa said.
The two students presented their idea and were selected as the winners in the Clearfield-based, nine-county region.
The app would also have a point system and remind users of their streak of wearing a seat belt. The two students say this can create an opportunity for friendly competition.
'This can help people encourage their friends to wear seatbelts. So not only is the app encouraging it, but it's encouraging other people to tell other people to wear their seatbelt,' Nicolas said.
'It seems like we need an app for almost anything these days. But they took it a step further by bringing the competition aspect to it. They want the results to be visible to friends, and they want you to be able to see your friends' results so you can compete just like people compete to get their steps in,' Safety Press Officer for PennDOT District 2, Steve Harmic said.
On average, more than 350 unrestrained fatalities occur on Pennsylvania's roadways annually. And as new drivers, the two students are pushing their peers to buckle up.
'When you start driving, it's not just yourself that you're driving, but anyone that's in the car, you are responsible for as well. So, you want to make sure that they're safe,' Toyokawa said.
The two will present their 'Belt Buddy' project to the PennDOT Secretary and a panel of judges on April 30 for a chance to win the $6,000 prize.

TGL indoor league adds Detroit team for 2027 season
Two months after the inaugural TGL season, the indoor golf league has expanded. Motor City Golf Club representing Detroit will be the seventh team in TGL, the league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy as part of their TMRW Sports entertainment company. Advertisement Motor City will not start playing until 2027. It will join teams that represent Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Boston, Atlanta and Jupiter, Florida. Atlanta, with Billy Horschel and Justin Thomas, won the inaugural title. The Motor City ownership group is led by Middle West Partners. The principals are Michael Hamp, Peter Hamp and Kevin Kelleher, all with Detroit roots. The Hamp family has been longtime co-owners of the Detroit Lions. 'This is a great moment for Detroit sports and a proud moment for me personally,' Michael Hamp said. 'My grandfather, William Clay Ford Sr., was an avid golfer, and I believe bringing a new format of the game he loved would make him really proud.' Advertisement The ownership group includes Denver Broncos owner Rob Walton and Jordan Rose, president of Arizona-based Rose Law Group. Each team features four players (Woods is with Jupiter, McIlroy with Boston). A group representing Dallas was working on a bid last month. With Detroit not starting until 2027, it was unlikely for TGL to start next year with more than its current six teams.

Boeing Engineers Turn Startup Arc Into Marine Powerhouse With New $168K Electric Boat That Outpaces Gas Competitors
Arc, a California-based startup founded in 2021 by former Boeing (NYSE:BA) engineers Mitch Lee and Ryan Cook, announced on May 15 its third all-electric boat model, the Arc Coast, priced at $168,000. The new 24-foot vessel follows the sold-out Arc One and the still-available Arc Sport, originally priced at $300,000 and $268,000, respectively, and offers a more affordable entry point for recreational boaters. According to Electrek, this new model is aimed at broader recreational markets, offering simplified design and reduced material costs while still delivering the power and performance of its predecessors. Don't Miss: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — Peter Thiel turned $1,700 into $5 billion—now accredited investors are eyeing this software company with similar breakout potential. Learn how you can Arc Coast features a high-voltage 226 kWh battery, the same system used in the Arc Sport, which, according to Electrek, gives the boat a top speed of 50 miles per hour and a cruising time of four to five hours on a single charge. Instead of the large outboard engines common in traditional boats, Arc says it uses a compact sterndrive system. The open deck accommodates up to 10 passengers, creating more room for fishing, relaxing, or swimming without the bulk and noise associated with combustion engines, Electrek reports. Arc said in a statement that the center console format has long been used for fishing and sandbar outings, offering flexible movement and social space. The Arc Coast was designed from scratch to deliver quiet electric performance, streamlined software, and a simplified ownership experience compared to traditional gas-powered boats. The design also enables Arc to simplify the layout and reduce material costs. Trending: Invest where it hurts — and help millions heal:. 'People love center consoles, but the experience hasn't improved,' Lee said in the statement. 'The Arc Coast is what you get when you start from scratch: all the benefits of quiet and powerful electric performance, powered by advanced software, and paired with an ownership experience free from many of the headaches common with today's gas boats.' According to the Environmental Protection Agency, diesel-powered boats contribute significantly to marine pollution through oil leaks, ground-level ozone, and toxic emissions that impact coastal ecosystems. Electric boats offer a cleaner alternative because they are quieter, require less maintenance, and can be charged with energy from renewable sources, Arc says. Even when factoring in the environmental cost of lithium-ion battery production, a 2016 report suggests that electric marine transport remains more sustainable than extracting and burning billions of tons of fossil fuels each year. Arc says it reused its existing battery system to reduce development time and expects to bring the Arc Coast to market in less than one year from prototype to the $168,000 price tag still places the Arc Coast in the premium category, the cost is significantly lower than previous Arc models. The new model fits into a broader trend of electrification in transportation, where marine sectors are now undergoing rapid shifts toward battery-powered mobility, according to a 2025 report from Grand View Research. Interested buyers can reserve the Arc Coast directly through the company's website, with deliveries expected to begin in 2026.
