BBC viewers left with same complaint after switching off new crime drama just minutes in
The BBC aired its "fun new crime spoof" series, starring Timothy Spall, for the first time on Sunday evening, but viewers were left unimpressed just minutes into the new show.
BBC viewers were left disappointed after settling down to watch a brand new comedy show only to switch it off just moments later with many vocalising the same complaint. Death Valley kicked off on Sunday evening on May 25, starring Timothy Spall as reclusive actor John Chapel famed for his role as a TV detective.
However, it transpires that he also has a talent for solving crimes in real life too. Despite his best efforts to live a peaceful and quiet life, he crosses paths with detective Janie Mallowan, played by Gwyneth Keyworth, who is investigating a mysterious death nearby.
It turns out she's actually the actor's biggest fan and the pair find themselves becoming an unlikely duo as they pair up to solve crimes. The BBC programme, which was filmed entirely in Wales, features a glittering cast alongside Spall and Keyworth.
It includes Gavin and Stacey star Steffan Rhodri, Alexandria Riley of Silo and The Pembrokeshire Murders fame, Sian Gibson known for her work on Peter Kay's Car Share plus additional writing from comedian and actor Sian Harries, the Express reports.
However, despite the fun premise and the show's promising reviews, some viewers were left unimpressed and flocked to social media to share their initial thoughts.
Despite The Guardian pitching the show as a "a fun new crime spoof for Ludwig fans," not everybody agreed.
One viewer remarked: "Just what I thought! It's too silly. The Guardian says people who love Ludwig will love Death Valley. NO! I LOVE Ludwig - this is absolute rubbish!"
Another chimed in: "Five mins & switching off - this is AWFUL. So bad."
A third viewer described the show as having "BBC1 weekday afternoon vibes to it."
Another person who tuned in wrote: "Hmm ... Not hitting the spot yet" while a fifth complained: "Ten minutes in...boring...screaming unintelligible actors...no thanks."
However, others had good things to say about the new programme with many hailing Timothy Spall's standout performance as the reclusive TV star, and others comparing it to other shows they had seen.
One viewer gushed: "Love Timothy Spall".
Another compared it to ITV drama, Professor T starring Ben Miller, as they remarked: "#DeathValley this is very much like #ProfessorT".
Ahead of the show's debut on Sunday evening, creator Paul Doolan described where the inspiration for the show came from.
He told the BBC: "I liked the idea of a TV actor who played a detective, and a fan of them, and the awkward relationship, but I couldn't really get beyond what else was funny about that.
"Then I thought 'what if they solve murders?', which is all really meta, and then started plotting it based around that."
Death Valley airs Sundays at 8.15pm on BBC One and iPlayer.

Doctor Who fans went wild last night when Billie Piper was revealed as the new Doctor on the sci-fi series, which Billie starred in previously as companion, Rose Tyler Eagle-eyed Doctor Who fans reckon Billie Piper was always destined to return to the BBC series after she was dramatically revealed as the new Doctor last night. Whovians across the country were sent into a frenzy when the current Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, regenerated in Saturday's show, and Billie, who played companion Rose Tyler in the series from 2005 to 2006, appeared in his place. Billie, 42, said she 'couldn't refuse' the opportunity to step back into the Tardis after her epic casting in the titular role was revealed and now fans say they've spotted a huge clue that the actress would return. During an unearthed fan convention for the sci-fi series in America in 2021, former Dr Who star, Christopher Ecclestone gives his take on who should be the next Doctor. As the audience lets out a squeal of excitement, he declared: "I think the new Doctor should be Billie Piper actually." Posting the clip on X, several fans hinted that Billie was always going to return to the Doctor Who as one shared a meme of Christopher saying: 'Absolutely fantastic' with the caption: "Chris looking at the TV yesterday be like." EastEnders dominates British Soap Awards with eight prizes
The ceremony, hosted at Hackney Empire in London by singer Jane McDonald, saw stars from the biggest soaps in the country go head to head for best scenes, performances and storylines. The popular BBC show won eight prizes on the night. It also took home the highly anticipated award for Best British Soap, with the trophy presented by Only Fools and Horses actor Sir David Jason. The Best Single Episode went to Phil's Psychosis, which saw him hallucinate scenes from the Mitchell family home in 1985. EastEnders also won Scene Of The Year, for Angie Watts' shock return as a ghost during its 40th anniversary episode. Other EastEnders wins were Navin Chowdhry, named Villain of the Year for his portrayal of Nish Panesar, and Patsy Palmer, who plays Bianca Jackson, who took home Best Comedy performance. Best On-Screen Partnership was won by Rudolph Walker, who plays Patrick Trueman and Angela Wynter, who plays his ex-wife, Yolande Trueman. Other awards on the night went to Hollyoaks, which won three, including an award for the abuse storyline between Osborne twins Jack Junior (JJ) and Frankie, played by Ryan Mulvey and Isabelle Smith. ITV's Emmerdale won Best Young Performer for 16-year-old Amelia Flanagan, who plays April Windsor. Emmerdale achieved a second award through Mike Plant, who won the Tony Warren Award. Coronation Street took home just one prize, with an outstanding achievement award for David Neilson, cafe owner Roy Cropper, who joined the show nearly three decades ago.
