IT'S the never-ending question in homes across the country – what should we have for dinner?
Luckily, one children's charity in Canterbury, Kent, is more than happy to provide the answer. It offers families the chance to learn some tasty new recipes that the whole crew will love – and that won't break the bank.

'We asked parents, like Ellie, what they would like to see us do,' says Ann Lamkin, the family support practitioner who runs the course with colleague Jo Horley at Canterbury and District Early Years Project.

The course gave mums including Ellie lots of ideas and some great recipes
'And one of them said: 'Oh, we just need some basic meals, some basic cookery. We're fed up with doing the same old, same old food.'
'So we put together a six-week course where we not only cook, we look at things like the importance of sitting around the table and eating together, or how to save time and money, like with batch cooking.
'Now they've got one extra or maybe five extra new things to add to their repertoire.'
The course, helped off the ground with a £1,000 Tesco Stronger Starts grant, takes place three times a year.
It's been a roaring success, with proud parents posting their dishes to the Facebook page.
One person asked how to make pastry, which they then turned into cheese straws. 'These skills get lost over time,' says Ann.
'There is nothing wrong with convenience foods, but we want to show that actually cooking from scratch can be cheaper.
'You probably end up with three times as much. And parents tend to find that it's not actually as hard as they think it is.'
Around 12 families attend each session. While parents cook, their children play in the free crèche.
Costs are kept to a minimum, at just £10 for the whole course – ingredients included – and there's a free food bank.
Healthy chicken nuggets rolled in cornflakes go down well, as does a moreish macaroni cheese using a homemade white sauce that can be the base of other dishes.
'We made a delicious bean and vegetable hotpot, which the children love,' says Ann.
'We asked our parents to guess the cost. It was just £2.30 for a family of four.'
Ann's top tips? Have a ready-made pantry at home with basics like rice, pasta, mixed herbs, chilli and tinned tomatoes, shop with a weekly meal plan – and don't hit the aisles when you're hungry.
'We reckon over the three courses it's between 53 and 60 children benefiting from having a meal that's cooked by their parents.'
Tesco Stronger Starts has awarded over £13million to almost 12,000 community projects, with grant recipients chosen by more than 330 million customer votes using blue tokens in stores across the UK. Applications for Cooking for All grants close on May 30.
A Tesco Cooking for All grant supports children by providing food access and education on nutrition and cooking.

'Mindless' vandalism of UNESCO World Heritage Site damned

Photos shared on social media on Sunday show the Vinnie sculpture, information board and bench at the Antonine Wall World Heritage Site in Old Kilpatrick, graffiti-ed in an act that has been damned by West Dunbartonshire Council. It is also understood that the same kind of blue spray paint was on the steps outside the Mildam Park in Faifley at the weekend, reading 'Stop the Boats'. Vinnie statue in the Lusset Glen. (Image: Supplied) An information board at the site was also vandalised. (Image: Supplied) Councillors in the area have since hit out at the vandalism, which was reported to the local authority. Cllr William Rooney for Kilpatrick, said: "I'm disgusted to see this kind of vandalism in our community. I've escalated the matter to the chief officers at the council so this can be removed immediately. "The installation in Old Kilpatrick was added only in the last couple of years as part of the Rediscovering the Antonine Wall project, and it has already been targeted by vandals. "It's a crying shame to witness such mindless vandalism in Old Kilpatrick and Faifley." It is understood that a kind-hearted local woman who saw the images on Facebook went up to the monument shortly after seeing the damage and cleaned up the site. A council team have also visited the site and carried out any repairs and clean-up work. "I got in touch with the council's vandalism team straight away, and I've been advised that they'll be out today to assess for any damage and finish any clean-up that's still needed. I also know some kind residents have already been down to help tidy things up - thank you so much for taking the time to do that. "Grateful to everyone who brought this issue to my attention, and hopefully this isn't a situation we need to deal with again." They said: 'The council is disappointed in this mindless act of vandalism at Lusset Glen in Old Kilpatrick. "The sculpture is located in close proximity to the Antonine Wall World Heritage and reflects the rich Roman heritage of the area. "The bench and area have been fully cleaned up and restored.'

Rats will stop visiting gardens once and for all if you use £1 kitchen essential

Rats are not only a nuisance, but they also spread disease and can cause damage to your garden. But a kitchen staple can stop them from visiting your garden for good Most property owners or green-fingered enthusiasts will admit to feeling a sinking feeling when they spy rats scurrying in their garden. These pesky critters wreak destruction on beloved plants, spread nasty diseases, and leave homeowners feeling thoroughly rattled. ‌ With their massive breeding rates, rats are the most prolific nuisance you're likely to encounter lurking in your garden. And that's not to mention the fact that they sometimes even sneak indoors. ‌ Whilst bird feeding stations aren't a guaranteed invite for these tricky rodents, once they clock your garden as a dependable grub source, they'll likely outstay their welcome - as one frustrated gardener discovered, reports the Express. ‌ Posting on the Facebook group Garden Makeover Ideas On A Budget, member Tina Hill pleaded: "Does anyone have any tips to deter or stop rats from coming into my garden. I really love my bird feeder and really don't want to get rid of it, but I also don't want more rats in my garden." The overwhelming response from fellow gardeners pointed to one fool-proof solution that "never fails" - sprinkling chilli powder. ‌ One follower revealed: "Chilli powder in with the bird food, mammals can taste it, but birds can't. I use it to stop rats and squirrels." Another chimed in: "They don't like chilli powder, and I found that birds don't mind it." And a third suggested: "Make it impossible for them to eat your bird feed by adding in a sprinkling of chilli powder." ‌ She added: "I added chilli powder to areas of my garden and they never came back. They were eating my herbs." Pest control experts at Rentokil's blog suggest the use of chilli powder as a deterrent, stating: "Rats are not fans of spicy scents. Chilli pepper flakes, cayenne pepper powder, or even a strong chilli oil can irritate their respiratory systems." They advise: "Sprinkling these spices around entry points, like air bricks, pipe entries, or under sheds, can create a barrier. Reapply after wet weather for continued protection." Similarly, the professionals at Enviro Safe Pest Control endorse this natural method of rat deterrence, asserting: "Chilli is known to irritate the respiratory tract of the rats when inhaled. Simply sprinkle the chilli powder in the rat-infested areas. When the rodents smell and ingest chilli powder, they won't return to the same area."
