DVS to review pork import proposal amid local supply shortage caused by ASF outbreak

KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) will review a proposal from the Federation of Pork Sellers Associations to import pork from Thailand, Brazil, and China as a temporary measure to overcome local supply shortages.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister (KPKM) Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the proposal comes after several pig farms in Selangor were closed due to an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF).
'Currently, Malaysia is still able to import pork from countries in Europe, Australia, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
'We encourage importers to source pork from these countries for now,' he said in a statement today.
Mohamad highlighted that the shortage has hurt local pig farmers and led to a sharp increase in fresh pork prices, impacting consumers.
Looking ahead, the minister said the ministry will work closely with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) to review proposals for pork price controls.
Price regulations, under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, are typically applied only during festive seasons when demand is high.
For a long-term solution to combat ASF, all industry players are urged to upgrade their farms to a Modern Pig Farming (MPF) system, which is proven to reduce the risk of diseases.
Mohamad welcomed support from the state governments of Penang, Perak, and Sabah for MPF implementation. He also noted that Sarawak and Negeri Sembilan are taking steps to establish special Pig Farming Areas (PFA) dedicated to the pig industry.
Both MPF and PFA use modern techniques to improve biosecurity and minimise the chance of disease outbreaks on farms.
While the transition to MPF requires significant investment, the ministry is ready to assist stakeholders through a streamlined process and plans to hold an engagement session soon.
'It is our hope that these measures will help stabilise the pork supply, benefit both consumers and farmers, and ultimately enable us to achieve a 90 per cent self-sufficiency rate in local pork production by 2030,' he concluded.

Speaking at the 34th Meeting of the Committee of Ministers of Trade and the 24th Meeting of the Ministerial Task Force on Regional Economic Integration in Harare, Zimbabwe's capital, SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi said the changing global tariff landscape had redefined trade dynamics, prompting the region to adopt pragmatic and strategic responses. "We must shape and determine our destiny going forward and swiftly attain robust negotiation skills that enable us to define trade and related aspects on our terms and for our benefit," Magosi said. He noted that most SADC member states that previously benefited from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), a U.S. trade program granting duty-free access to African countries, stand to lose significantly following the blanket 10 percent tariff the United States is considering imposing on all imported goods. "Further, the uncertainty over whether AGOA will be renewed this September compounds the existing challenge. I firmly believe that these recent geopolitical developments should serve as a powerful wake-up call for our region, a call for us to unite, cooperate, and integrate more," he said. Magosi expressed deep concern over low inter-regional trade within SADC, which stands at 18 percent, despite the establishment of the SADC Free Trade Area (FTA) in 2008. "The full implementation of the SADC FTA by all SADC member states remains critical in ensuring enhanced market access, leveraging on the gains from trade to grow our economies," Magosi said. The SADC is a 16-member regional bloc, comprising Angola, Botswana, the Comoros, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Malaysia boosts halal trade with Africa as exports to Algeria rise

NEW DELHI: Malaysia is looking at deepening halal trade links with African countries following an impressive growth in exports to Algeria, one of the region's top economies. Malaysia underscored its interest in boosting collaboration with African partners in various halal industries at the recently held Halal Economic Leadership Forum (HELF) 2025 in Algiers. The event was held in conjunction with the Islamic Development Bank's (IsDB) Annual Meeting and Private Sector Forum. "We had discussions on the need for capacity building and technical training, with Malaysia offering expertise and knowledge transfer to develop local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and certification bodies," Malaysia's ambassador to Algeria Rizany Irwan Muhamad Mazlan told Bernama. Co-organised by the Halal Development Corporation (HDC) under Malaysia's Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), the IsDB, and the Halal Products Development Company (HPDC), a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), the high-profile forum recognised Africa's strategic importance in the vast global halal economy. Malaysia's halal exports to Algeria in 2024 grew 24 per cent to reach RM156.30 million, with key segments being food and beverages, cosmetics, halal-certified ingredients and palm oil-based goods, Rizany told the forum. "Participants called for greater public-private collaboration and continued dialogue to advance halal economic integration and praised Malaysia's leading position in the global halal sector," he said. "Malaysia is committed to strengthen collaboration with Algeria and other Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states to improve halal supply chains, enhance trade integration and support shared socio-economic development," he said. Fostering entrepreneurship and encouraging innovation are seen as key to building resilient halal supply chains, with participants proposing the establishment of halal industrial zones to boost regional production capacity and world market competitiveness. Africa is seen as having significant potential both as a market and production base in the global halal business. Rizany said key agenda topics included mutual recognition of halal certification, enhancing Malaysia–North Africa trade facilitation, investment in logistics infrastructure and support systems for SMEs in halal businesses. The forum, moderated by Samer Elesawi, head of the IsDB Centre of Excellence, was attended by more than 300 stakeholders representing public and private sectors, financial institutions, development agencies and halal industry players in OIC countries. The participants included HDC Malaysia chief executive officer Hairol Ariffein Sahari, PT. ILTHABI Rekatama Indonesia chairman Ilham A. Habibie, Nigeria's Dar Al Halal Group Ltd chief Muhammadu Dikko Ladan, Turkiye's Yildiz Holding general manager Rohaizad Hassan, Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican, secretary general of the Treasury of Malaysia, and Issa Faye, IsDB's director general for global practices and partnership. — BERNAMA
