Singapore Air, Cathay Split on Banning Power Bank Use on Flights

Bloomberg13-03-2025
Singapore Airlines Ltd. will ban the use of portable power banks on flights from next month, splitting from regional rival Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., after batteries were suspected to have led to fires or smoke in planes.
The Singapore Air group, which also includes budget carrier Scoot, said customers won't be allowed to charge power banks via onboard USB ports or use them to charge personal devices throughout the duration of a flight. Power banks must be carried in cabin baggage on all flights and aren't permitted in checked luggage, according to a post on the company's X account on Wednesday.

Acer 4-Port USB Hub Crashes to Under $10, Might As Well Grab One While Supplies Last

I've got a bone to pick with modern laptop designs. As manufacturers look to make their devices thinner, sleeker, 'cooler' looking, they are dropping useful features and connectivity options. Laptops that used to have multiple USB ports are dropping down to just one, or in some cases, none. Don't even get me started on phones dropping the AUX port (I'll never get over that). In any case, if you're not ready to say goodbye to having multiple accessories connected to your laptop at once, you may find a USB dock especially helpful. This 2ft option will split one USB-A slot into four, and right now, it's gone down in price by 57%. That brings its down from $23 to just $10 — saving you $15. See at Amazon There are a couple other options on sale as well. You can find the 0.7ft USB hub has gone down from $15 to $13 while the 4ft option has dropped from $20 to $17. The starting prices and discounts of each compared to one another make no logical sense, but the 2ft dock mentioned up to is currently the cheapest. With this four-way USB-A splitter, you can easily connect some additional peripherals to your laptop or PC such as a mouse, keyboard, printer, or thumb drive. You'll experience transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps which will allow you to move movies, photos, and other large files from one hard drive to another in just seconds. The LED light will let you know it's successfully plugged in and working. It does have a singular USB-C port but that is not meant for charging devices or transferring data. It's sole use is to power the hub only. And if you should only use a 5V input for it otherwise you risk overheating, melting, or damaging your devices. Not exactly ideal, but this is just a $10 dock after all. The dock is built with an advanced GL3510 chip which is designed for good thermal design with the intent of keeping your plugged-ion devices safe. It's just plug and play without the need for installing a dedicated driver. The Acer multiport adapter is super lightweight and compact in nature which makes it easy to travel with. Fit it into a bag or briefcase alongside your laptop no problem. So if you're hoping to expand the number of options for what you can connect to your laptop, this USB-A dock from Acer is an affordable option. Get it today for under $10. See at Amazon

Twelve South's 120W charger with Apple Find My support is nearly half off

It's not every day you come across a wall charger that can both power and help you keep track of your devices, but that's the beauty of Twelve South's 120W PlugBug. The slim wall charger with four USB-C ports can double as a location tracker when needed, and it's currently on sale at Amazon for $67.12 (about $53 off) when you clip the on-page coupon. This is a new low price for this high-end configuration. Although the 50W variant was recently on sale for just $19.99, it's since increased to $58.99 at Amazon, making it only $10 cheaper than the 120W model. The 120W PlugBug a better value overall, obviously, since the travel-friendly charger offers four USB-C ports as opposed to two, not to mention a lot more power. It's capable of quickly charging the latest MacBook Pro, as well as other power-hungry laptops. What really sets this GaN charger apart, though, is its compatibility with Apple's Find My app. If you own an Apple device, such an iPhone or iPad, you can track the location of the charger along with whatever bag it's in, just as you would an AirTag. It even beeps if you accidentally leave it behind, which can be a lifesaver during those frantic mornings when you're rushing out the door. It's worth mentioning that the PlugBug includes a coin battery that enables Find My. Sign up for Verge Deals to get deals on products we've tested sent to your inbox weekly.
