BOSTON — Unless Max Fried was going to pick up a bat, there was not much more he could have done to help the Yankees on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park.
But the left-hander, who had been especially good when pitching after a Yankees loss, was still left beating himself up essentially for not being perfect in a 2-0 loss to the Red Sox in which he gave up just two runs across seven innings.
'The way I see it is I needed to come out and be a little bit better and be able to match [Red Sox starter Brayan Bello],' Fried said. 'He was throwing a lot of zeros and in a game like that, I got to come out and be better and match him for those zeros.'
Bello stifled the Yankees across seven shutout innings while Fried gave up a single run in the first inning and another in the fifth.

Entering Sunday, the Yankees were 8-0 in Fried's starts following a loss. He had given up just five earned runs in 54 innings during those starts.
But they could not rely on Fried alone Sunday as their bats went silent.
'Gave us seven strong, he did everything he needed to do to give us a chance to win a ballgame,' manager Aaron Boone said.
In the bottom of the first, after Fried had erased Anthony Volpe's fielding error by getting a double play ball, Romy Gonzalez extended the inning with a triple to right field. Trevor Story blooped a single to left to bring him in for the 1-0 lead.
Rafael Devers doubled the lead in the fifth inning, sneaking a solo home run just over the Green Monster.
Fried said his 94 mph fastball missed the location he wanted — J.C. Escarra was set up on the inside edge and instead the pitch caught too much of the plate, though the lefty said he 'didn't hate where it ended up.'

'Put it in a spot where a really good hitter was able to hit the ball hard enough,' Fried said. 'If I locate that in the area I want, I think the result's probably a little bit better.'
Fried, who scattered six hits and two walks while striking out nine on a season-high 106 pitches, finished the day with a 1.89 ERA.
'I would say it's a good club over there,' he said. 'They're putting together really good at-bats and seem to have a really good plan. They were able to get two runs and made me work all day. A lot of deep counts. It was definitely a good battle.'
Giancarlo Stanton spent Sunday at Yankee Stadium, with Angels pitchers loaded up on the Trajekt pitching machine to simulate the arms he will be facing this week when he comes off the injured list.
The Yankees expect to activate Stanton on either Monday or Tuesday to make his season debut after missing the first two and a half months of the season with tendinitis in both elbows.
The Yankees are 8-11 against the AL East and 34-16 against every other team

Yankees lose another trade acquisition to injured list

NEW YORK — The Yankees' depth took a hit on Sunday morning as bench bat Amed Rosario was placed on the 10-day injured list with a chest contusion. Rosario got hurt when he crashed into the wall in right field on Friday night during Devin Williams' disastrous 10th inning. The official diagnosis from the Yankees is a left SC joint sprain. Catcher J.C. Escarra was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take the veteran's spot on the active roster. For Monday's Yankees game against Minnesota, the run total is set at 9 on FanDuel. Our FanDuel Sportsbook review provides an in-depth guide on how to use their platform. The expectation is that this will be a brief IL stint for the veteran utility man. Rosario feels day-to-day physically and is already improving since he ran into the wall on Friday, but the Yankees didn't want to play short for several days in a row while he's recuperating. 'The idea is to come back when the 10 days are up,' Rosario said through the Yankees' interpreter. Rosario was acquired from the Nationals in exchange for two prospects ahead of last month's trade deadline. He'll join outfielder Austin Slater on the IL, another deadline addition who got hurt over his first few games in pinstripes. Slater will miss four-to-six weeks with a hamstring strain, an injury he suffered this past week while running out a ground ball in Texas. With both Rosario and Slater unavailable, the Yankees have less of a right-handed presence on their bench. José Caballero is available — one more deadline acquisition for the Yankees — and Giancarlo Stanton hasn't been starting against righties lately, but manager Aaron Boone will be missing some of that late-inning flexibility while those bench bats are out. 'Hopefully it's just [the 10 days for Rosario],' Boone said. Thank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust. Please consider supporting us with a subscription. Yankees send bench bat down to Triple-A on off day

With veteran Amed Rosario expected to return from the injured list on Tuesday in Tampa, the Yankees needed to make room on their active roster. That's why backup catcher J.C. Escarra was optioned down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday afternoon. Escarra was called up from Triple-A when Rosario went on the injured list with a chest contusion (a left SC joint sprain was the official diagnosis). Rosario ran into the right-field wall during Devin Williams' 10th-inning implosion against the Astros at Yankee Stadium. While Rosario was day-to-day and avoided a serious injury, the Yankees moved him to the IL so they wouldn't need to play short on their bench. The plan was always for Rosario to come back to the big-league club when the minimum 10 days on the injured list expired. He'll be eligible to rejoin the Yankees on Tuesday as his IL stint was retroactive to August 9. Escarra only played in one game during Rosario's absence. He came off the bench for a few innings at first base in the Yankees' 9-1 win over the Twins on August 12. That late-inning appearance corresponded with Paul Goldschmidt's knee injury. The veteran bumped his knee and suffered a low-grade sprain while tracking down a pop fly in foul territory. If Goldschmidt needed to go on the IL, Escarra could've stuck around in pinstripes for a little while longer even when Rosario was activated. Goldschmidt didn't end up needing to go on the injured list, though. He returned to the starting lineup on Sunday in St. Louis, contributing three hits to the Yankees' sweep-clinching victory over the Cardinals. This season, Escarra is hitting .202 with a .629 OPS in 98 plate appearances. He's been on the big-league roster for much of this season, but has only played in 40 games, buried on the depth chart behind catchers Austin Wells and Ben Rice. Yankees make surprise Anthony Volpe decision for first time in 47 games

Yankees make surprise Anthony Volpe decision for first time in 47 games originally appeared on The Sporting News For much of the summer, Yankees manager Aaron Boone has had an easy spot in the lineup. Each game for the past 46 New York contests, Boone has written Anthony Volpe in as the shortstop. Not on Sunday, though. Instead, Volpe sits. Jose Caballero gets the start at short. It's a day off for Volpe, who has gone 0-for-9 with four strikeouts through the first two games of the Yankees' series in St. Louis. MORE: Juan Soto, Josh Naylor and Cal Raleigh are making stolen bases cool again On the season, Volpe's average has dropped to .215, with his on-base percentage at .283. Volpe does have 25 doubles, four triples, 18 homers, 65 RBI and 15 steals. He makes a lot of things happen on the stat sheet when he makes contact, but he also has 115 strikeouts. Volpe's defense has also left something to be desired at times, and although he'll surely be right back at shortstop soon, the Yankees are giving Caballero a shot for the day. New York got Caballero from the Tampa Bay Rays right before the trade deadline buzzer on July 31. He's capable of playing all over the field. MORE: Phillies' pitcher Matt Strahm has the funniest reason for investing in Pokemon cards Caballero is most known for his speed, and in nine Yankees appearances, he's already 5-for-5 stealing bases. Caballero is 5-for-14 (.357) in his limited New York action so far. A Sunday afternoon game is often the perfect time for teams to give their lesser-played options a start, and that's what the Yankees are doing with Caballero. It's unlikely he'll unseat Volpe anytime soon, but this is a chance for Caballero to at least prove he deserves a few more looks down the stretch of the season as the Yankees try and heat up.
