New Rust documentary reveals doubts over armorer's ‘little experience' were overlooked due to famous father

Independent10-03-2025

Rust first assistant director Dave Halls has said he knew armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was inexperienced, but concerns were 'tempered' by her father being stuntman and film armorer Thell Reed, according to a new documentary.
Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust and given the maximum sentence of 18 months in prison.
Halls was sentenced to six months of unsupervised probation after being charged with negligent use of a deadly weapon.
Speaking in the new documentary Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna, Halls says, "I knew that she had little experience, but concern over lack of experience was tempered by knowing that her father was Thell Reed."
Last Take premieres on Hulu on Tuesday, March 11, and features a new interview with Halls.
The movie's director Joel Souza, who was hit by the same bullet fired from Alec Baldwin's weapon as Hutchins, actors Frances Fisher, Josh Hopkins, and Devon Werkheiser, and Hutchins's mother Olga also speak out in the documentary.
Gutierrez-Reed, who was 26 at the time, was sentenced last April.
During the hearing, she was required to listen to victim impact statements. Gutierrez-Reed, who had maintained her composure throughout almost all of her trial, was brought to tears numerous times as Hutchins' loved ones explained in detail the pain they felt in the aftermath of the fatal shooting in 2021.
The family's attorney, Gloria Allred, read a statement in court from Hutchins's mother, Olga Solovey, who lives in Kyiv, Ukraine. Videos of the family were also played.
'Time does not heal, it simply prolongs my pain and suffering,' Allred said, on behalf of Ms Solovey. 'I have hope that the guilty, those that are responsible for the death of my daughter, will be punished fairly and be sentenced justly. Justice must prevail.'
Souza also addressed the court, saying that he wished for Hutchins to still be alive and for all of the people affected by the shooting to be at 'peace.'
'I want everyone damaged by Ms Reed's failures that day to find peace ... I want the pain to go away, I want to be the person I was before this happened, and above all I want Halyna to be back with her husband and son in the home she never got to live in,' he said.
Gutierrez-Reed stated to the court shortly before her sentencing, saying she hoped those affected by 'this god-awful tragedy' found peace and that she was thankful Souza survived the incident. She also said that Hutchins was and continues to be an inspiration to her.

A new trailer from Hulu titled Call Her Alex has been released and will explore the Call Her Daddy podcaster, who has gone from success to success in recent years. The synopsis reads: 'Alex Cooper is at the top of her game, signing one of the biggest deals in podcast history. 'This revealing two-part docuseries gives audiences a behind-the-scenes, intimate look at her journey and the defining moments that shaped her influential voice. All episodes of Call Her Alex stream June 10 on Hulu.' Alex, 30, founded the podcast in 2018 and since its inception has welcomed the likes of Kamala Harris, Hailey Bieber, Miley Cyrus, and Chelsea Handler. The series will explore her recent multi-million dollar deal that saw the podcaster rake in the big bucks. In August 2024 it was reported that the podcaster was set to sign a massive contract with SiriusXM in August be worth around $125m. Before this, Alex had signed a $60m three-year deal with Spotify. Speaking about why she moved on from the brand, she explained that she wanted to grow the podcast, and her brand Unwell. 'The brand had only grown since being at Spotify,' she told Forbes in December 2024. 'I knew the money would be there. The deal was more about what other things people can give Call Her Daddy and Unwell that will help us grow.' The star has also previously revealed that she once turned down a brand deal worth $8m. Speaking to Harry Jowsey on his Boyfriend Material podcast, a show on Cooper's Unwell network, she revealed she turned down the mega deal as she didn't want to 'put her face next to' the brand. It was estimated by CEO Today that in March 2025, Alex was worth around $25m. Page Six also estimated in April 2025 that the star was worth $22m. More Trending 'I was fortunate to grow up in a household where it was normalised to speak your mind,' she said. 'Playing sports and making videos in my basement, those were the two things I really loved.' The trailer suggests that the film will pick into some of the more challenging parts of Alex's life as she reflects on how she got to where she is now. Call Her Alex debuts on Disney Plus on June 10. Major changes coming to Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! after more than 40 seasons of the iconic shows

Two of America's most iconic game shows are finally headed to streaming. Starting this September, Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune will be available to stream on Hulu, Peacock, and Hulu on Disney+, Variety has reported. This marks the first time that the long-running shows will be accessible on major platforms the day after they air on television. The multi-year deal, made by Sony Pictures Television, includes both current and select past episodes of each series. That means fans will not only get to keep up with the latest game shows but also revisit memorable moments from past seasons. 'We are thrilled to bring America's favorite game shows to an even wider audience on Hulu, Hulu on Disney+, and Peacock,' said Keith Le Goy, Chairman of Sony Pictures Television. 'Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are two of the most successful game shows in television history and we look forward to giving fans the best possible streaming access to our shows this fall.' Streaming will begin as Jeopardy! hits its 42nd season and Wheel marks its 43rd. 'These deals will expand Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune's reach to a new generation of viewers while ensuring that existing fans can enjoy their favorite shows with greater accessibility, deepening the fandom overall for these formidable franchises,' Sony added in its release. Historically, the absence of the shows from the streaming world has puzzled viewers, especially given their massive popularity. However, the shows' syndication structure and the ongoing legal disputes between Sony and CBS have long complicated their digital distribution. In 2024, Sony filed a lawsuit against CBS, claiming the network engaged in acts of 'self-dealing' in its distribution of the popular game shows Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune. Sony claimed in the court docs that CBS breached agreements in making unauthorized transactions in Australia and New Zealand that garnered them revenues of $3.6 million they subsequently refused to share, according to Variety. CBS countersued weeks later, in which the company claimed Sony was 'attempting to obtain in court what it could not get at the bargaining table: the rights to the series for free, by finding any excuse it can muster.' In April, a judge ruled in favor of Sony taking over the distribution of the shows. However, just last week, the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, granted CBS a writ of supersedeas. That means CBS will remain the current distributor while the appeal is ongoing, effectively pausing the April decision until the legal process is complete. The news of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! coming to streaming follows another major program's signing of a streaming service deal. In January, WWE RAW finally made its long-awaited, $3.8 billion debut on Netflix. RAW has been running since 1993 and is broadcasted every Monday night. Netflix chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, said at the time: 'We are excited to have WWE RAW, with its huge and passionate multigenerational fan base, on Netflix. 'By combining our reach, recommendations, and fandom with WWE, we'll be able to deliver more joy and value for their audiences and our members. 'RAW is the best of sports entertainment, blending great characters and storytelling with live-action 52 weeks a year and we're thrilled to be in this long-term partnership with WWE.'
