Fordham basketball hit with NCAA sanctions for improper benefits to recruits
The Rams were placed on three years of probation and must vacate 41 wins over the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons for impermissible benefits during recruiting visits. The program also was fined $35,000 plus 2% of the men's basketball budget.

Former director of basketball operations Trevonn Morton was hit with a three-year show cause for misleading NCAA investigators and former athletic director Edward Kull was hit with a one-year show cause.
Fordham said in a statement is cooperated with the NCAA Committee on Infractions and self-imposed sanctions prior to completion of the investigation.
The improper benefits included a photo shoot at Times Square, jet ski rentals and tickets to New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets and New York Giants games.
Urgo was fired on March 20 following the Rams' second straight losing season and a last-place finish in the Atlantic 10.

(AP) — Colby Thomas, Shea Langeliers and Nick Kurtz homered, rookie Jack Perkins had seven strikeouts in five solid innings and the Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angeles 10-3 on Friday night. The Athletics snapped an eight-game losing streak, which included seven this season, against the Angels. Thomas and Kurtz each had three hits and drove in three runs. Thomas, a 24-year-old rookie, hit a three-run homer in the third inning and Kurtz hit a three-run shot that capped the scoring in the eighth. Perkins (2-2) made his third career start and allowed three runs on five hits with three walks. He allowed three runs on three hits in six innings to beat Orioles 11-3 for first win as a starter his last time out. Langeliers hit solo homer off Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi (6-8) and added an RBI single. Kikuchi gave up five hits and four runs in four innings. Travis d'Arnaud doubled to drive in Yoán Moncada in the second for the Angels. Zach Neto homered after Bryce Teodosio walked on four pitches to lead off the fifth to trim their deficit to 4-3. Key stat The Athletics were 6 for 9 with runners in scoring position while the Angels were 1 for 7. NL West race heats up as Dodgers tie Padres for lead
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Things sure have changed since the last time the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers clashed, back in June. The Dodgers were running away in the NL West then with a nine-game lead. The Padres were in third place. Now, with 1 1/2 months left in the season, it's all tied up. San Diego came into Dodger Stadium on Friday night with a one-game lead over the defending World Series champions. It's the latest the Padres had led the division since September 2010 and the first time the Dodgers had been out of first this late in the season since Aug. 18, 2021. By the time it was over, the Dodgers won 3-2 to snap a four-game skid and gain a tie for first. 'We just played some bad games and we're fine moving forward,' winning pitcher Clayton Kershaw said. The Padres' five-game winning streak ended. 'The only day in the standings that ultimately matters is the last day of the season,' Padres manager Mike Shildt said before the game, 'but we've played good baseball and we feel good where we're at.' The last time the Padres won the NL West was in 2006, when their leadoff hitter was current Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. 'The reality is we got here by putting emphasis on every day being the most important day of the season and that's not going to change from my seat,' Shildt said. The Dodgers had been in first every day since April 27, but injuries, pitching woes and lack of offensive punch have derailed them. 'It just takes one to get going," Kershaw said, "and hopefully this was it for us.' Ever the optimist, Roberts is keeping the faith in his lineup. 'They just got to go out there and take good at-bats,' he said. 'They're motivated. I don't like to be embarrassed, I don't think our players do, so this series I'm expecting kind of high intensity and high performance.' The teams meet five more times over the next nine days. 'The division isn't won or lost in the next 10 days but it will make an impact and we know that,' Kershaw said. 'We just got to keep playing. You can't put any more or any less on it. Hopefully, our talent and our team will take over, which we know it will.' The series opener Friday was devoid of the fireworks that occurred in June, when the Dodgers took five of seven games during the teams' first two series. Ten batters were hit, including Padres slugger Fernando Tatis Jr. three times. The last time cleared the benches. Roberts and Shildt were ejected following a tense back-and-forth exchange. This time, Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia hit Jose Iglesias and Jake Cronenworth back-to-back to open the eighth, but there was no retribution by the Padres. 'It was a high intensity game but it was certainly kind of tempered as far as internally,' Roberts said afterward, 'but I think that I could see it as far as on the field. I could feel it. Our focus was keen.' Roberts said beforehand that he and Shildt had not spoken since the contretemps. 'I'm past it,' Roberts said before the game. 'I just want us to play well.' Shildt said, 'I'm not a grudge guy. I'm not a carry things over. I'm more of a day-to-day guy. Go and treat people with respect.' Roberts said, 'I'll just do what I do all the time, say hello and that's about it.' ___

Sam Darnold impresses in preseason debut with Seattle Seahawks, win against Kansas City Chiefs
SEATTLE (AP) — Sam Darnold looked the part of a franchise quarterback in his first appearance at Lumen Field as the Seattle Seahawks beat the Kansas City Chiefs 33-16 in a preseason game on Friday night. Darnold, who did not appear in the Seattle Seahawks' preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders, completed 4 of 4 passes for 34 yards on the opening drive. Darnold, who signed to a three-year, $100.5 million contract with Seattle in the offseason, made good use of both his legs and his tight ends during his sole series. He had no issues rolling out to either his left or right, locating tight ends AJ Barner and Elijah Arroyo for short passes, as well as fullback Robbie Ouzts and wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba for deeper completions. Backup quarterback Drew Lock impressed in relief of Darnold, throwing a couple of touchdown passes to wide receiver Jake Bobo, and completing 10 of 12 passes for 129 yards. Running backs Zach Charbonnet and Damien Martinez each added touchdowns on the ground in the first and third quarters, respectively. The Chiefs, meanwhile, did not play quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce and other starters from the team that fell to the Philadelphia Eagles in last season's Super Bowl. Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew found tight end Robert Tonyan for a 1-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. The Seahawks' defense in large part held strong, limiting the Chiefs' reserves to three points in the second half. Kansas City wide receiver Skyy Moore, though, did return a punt for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Scampering Seahawks After rushing for the fifth-fewest yards as a team in 2024, the Seahawks have made it their prerogative to be more effective on the ground in 2025. They demonstrated on Friday, racking up 268 rushing yards on 48 carries. Five different players rushed for at least 30 yards. Tight end time Since Noah Fant is now a member of the Cincinnati Bengals, tight end remains a key position battle for the Seahawks. Arroyo and Barner combined for three catches and 24 yards on Friday, not letting any passing attempts escape them despite slippery conditions. Barner is the more veteran player, with 30 catches and 245 receiving yards under his belt from last season. But Arroyo, who was a second-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft, has been more productive in the preseason. He has four catches for 33 yards through two exhibition games. ___
