Colleen Bready's Forecast: Wildfire smoke lingering in Manitoba
Wildfire smoke continues to plague much of Manitoba on Tuesday, prompting Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to continue an air quality warning for a large swath of the province.
The warning is in effect for southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg, and all central areas extending into some northern regions.
ECCC says northwest flow is sending smoke into southern Manitoba, mainly in central areas, the Interlake and eastern regions.
Further south, the agency says an existing plume of dense smoke is swirling around the region under a ridge of high pressure moving over the areas. Light winds aren't helping either.

As for any relief, ECCC says a southerly flow will develop over the central prairies Thursday, which should gradually improve air quality over the south. The problem, though, is that the smoke will then move into northern Manitoba.
The air quality warning extends eastward across much of northwestern Ontario.
Otherwise on Tuesday, non-severe thunderstorms could pop up in southwestern and northern parts of Manitoba.
Winnipeg will be dry Tuesday with a daytime high of 23 C, below the normal seasonal high of 26 C.
Temperatures will gradually climb through the midweek until reaching the upper 20s starting Friday, in time for the Bombers' home game and through the August long weekend.

Smoke causing air quality concerns in Central Ontario
Air quality statement issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada, due to smoke blowing through the region Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECC) has issued a special air quality statement in effect for the region due to smoke. The statement was issued just before 6:00 p.m. in Simcoe County and according to ECC, the smoke is from forest fires and could remain in the area throughout the weekend. Visibility can also be impacted due to the smoke in the air. According to ECC, residents could experience symptoms from the smoke including eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, and coughing. Officials are also saying when indoors to keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.

Seasonal temperatures but mixed weather for the long weekend
Temperatures are expected to be seasonal with some storms in the mix. There's always a lot of pressure to deliver nice weather on the August long weekend, and to many Albertans chagrin, it usually always has at least one thunderstorm. This August long is no different. The rest of Friday evening should be rather calm and pleasant for Calgary, though there is a low risk for thunderstorms to track into the city overnight. There's a lot of convection brewing over the Rocky Mountains, but many of those thunderstorm cells are losing energy as they move into the foothills. Saturday storm outlook for Aug. 2, 2025 There's a minor risk of thunderstorms for Calgary on Saturday. (CTV Calgary) However, for those in the area, it could be a very active night for you! Saturday should start off fine for Calgary and the surrounding area with sun and cloud throughout the afternoon, but the Storm Outlook issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada has a bulk of the province, including the city, under a minor risk threat for thunderstorms tomorrow. The primary hazards for Calgary if a storm rolls through will be winds up to 70 km/h, hail up to 2 cm in diameter, and localized rainfall up 25 mm. Saturday night forecast, Aug. 2, 2025 The most severe active weather should roll through Calgary at around 9 p.m. Saturday night. (CTV Calgary) Models predict the most severe active weather tomorrow to roll through Calgary at around 9 pm, and as it stands now, the SW/SE quadrants will see the most intense conditions. The back half of the weekend brings increased cloud cover and scattered showers for Sunday and the holiday Monday, with a chance of isolated thunderstorms as well.

Colleen Bready has your current conditions and updated weather forecast for August 1, 2025. After the smokiest month on record in Winnipeg, August starts off the same way on Friday. In fact, the entire province does. All of Manitoba is blanketed under widespread smoke, prompting Environment and Climate Change Canada to issue an air quality warning for every region. The weather agency notes the worst degradation of air quality is in northern Manitoba, closest to wildfires that continue to churn out smoke. That said, ECCC's air quality health index rates Winnipeg at very high risk for poor air quality Friday afternoon, and forecasts that will last until at least Saturday night. (Photo by Diane Simon) Smoky conditions have been reported in Brandon Friday morning into early afternoon. However, ECCC assesses the city at moderate risk for poor air quality. Further east, an air quality warning continues for the northern half of northwestern Ontario, while ECCC has issued a special air quality statement for southern areas, including Kenora. Back in northern Manitoba, some regions where fires continue to burn are also dealing with increasing heat, thanks to a ridge of high pressure approaching from the west. ECCC has continued a heat warning for The Pas, Flin Flon and Lynn Lake regions Friday and expanded it to the Thompson region. Those areas will contend with hot highs close to 30 C and warm overnight lows in the mid-teens over the next couple of days. Things are heating up in the south, too. Daytime highs will reach the upper 20s with humidex values that feel in the low 30s Friday afternoon, including in Winnipeg. Without the smoke, sky conditions would be sunny. The August long weekend should serve up more hot highs in the upper 20s in Winnipeg with sunshine or a mix of sun and cloud all three days. Similar conditions are expected in cottage country.
