Export of mobile phones jumps 127 times in a decade: Govt
New Delhi: India has witnessed a phenomenal surge in mobile phone exports, which have risen 127 times in the last decade from just Rs 0.01 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 2 lakh crore in 2024-25, the Parliament was informed on Wednesday. Officials credited this remarkable growth to the reforms and policy measures introduced under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision, which transformed India into a global hub for electronics manufacturing. The production of mobile phones has jumped from Rs 0.18 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 5.5 lakh crore in 2024-25 -- marking a 28-fold increase, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. During the same period, the number of mobile manufacturing units expanded from just two in 2014 to over 300 in 2025, a rise of 150 times. As a result, India, once dependent on imports to meet nearly three-fourths of its mobile phone demand, now imports a negligible 0.02 per cent of the total units sold. Overall electronics production has also grown six times in the last decade, from Rs 1.9 lakh crore to Rs 11.3 lakh crore, while exports of electronic goods have surged eight times to Rs 3.3 lakh crore in 2024-25. The government attributed this turnaround to flagship schemes like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) for large-scale electronics and IT hardware, the Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC and EMC 2.0), the Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS), and the Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order 2017. These initiatives have generated an estimated 25 lakh direct and indirect jobs in the electronics sector across India. Maharashtra alone hosts 85 supported manufacturing units, two common facility centres and one electronics manufacturing cluster under the Ministry's schemes. The government also highlighted the role of Digital India and Skill India programmes in equipping youth with digital skills. In Maharashtra, over 53 lakh people have been trained under Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (PMGDISHA), including nearly 6 lakh from Scheduled Tribes, while initiatives like FutureSkills PRIME and drone technology training programmes have further expanded employability opportunities.

Former Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark joining Finnish quantum company's board
STOCKHOLM: Former Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark will join Finnish quantum computing company QMill as an investor and a board member, the company said on Wednesday. Lundmark stepped down from the top job at Nokia earlier this year after being appointed as CEO in 2020, and is credited with turning around the telecom gear maker. Antti Vasara, former head of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, and a former Nokia executive, will also join QMill as chair of the board. Espoo, Finland-based QMill, is a quantum-algorithm company, which started operations last year, and has raised seed funding from Antler, and Kvanted. Quantum computing is emerging as a promising sector where many startups are working alongside tech companies such as Microsoft and Nvidia to build functional computers to solve problems that would take classical computers thousands of years.

Nokia wins 400G routing, software-defined access network deal from Netplus
NEW DELHI: Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia has won a 400G routing technology and software-defined access network (SDAN) deployment deal from homegrown internet provider Netplus Broadband, to enable high-speed broadband and IPTV services for the latter. The deployment of these solutions will enable Netplus to additionally deliver immersive and flexible services to nearly 2 million users, and convert traditional linear TV subscribers to on-demand IPTV, the companies said in a joint statement. The companies, however, did not disclose financial terms. With energy-efficient components across all network layers, the deployment will also contribute to lower operating costs and support sustainable growth for Netplus, according to the statement. This comes at a time when a rapid shift in consumer demand for on-demand video, online gaming and educational services, is pressuring Indian ISPs to upgrade their networks for performance and sustainability. For IP access and aggregation, Netplus is leveraging Nokia's 7250 Interconnect Routers (IXR) series for broadband aggregation and the 7750 Service Router (SR) for broadband network gateway (BNG) functionality. This is complemented by Nokia's next-generation SDAN-based platform for PON (GPON, XGSPON), integrating Altiplano Access Controller with Lightspan Optical Line Terminal (OLT). The new network architecture leverages Altiplano's SDAN functionality to optimise service performance, providing automated control, diagnostics and orchestration across access networks to help accelerate service rollout. 'This deployment ensures we deliver an improved customer experience, better energy efficiency and flexibility to support evolving needs in business and education. Our collaboration with Nokia reinforces our commitment to building next-gen digital highways for northern India,' said Arshdeep Singh Mundi, executive director at Netplus. 'Our solutions deliver the performance, scalability and automation needed to support data-intensive applications like IPTV. With this deployment, Netplus gains the tools to ensure network reliability, reduce energy costs and evolve toward a future-ready architecture,' said Jivitesh Nayal, head of emerging business for network infrastructure at Nokia India.
