Increased capex, focus on rare earth minerals may shape India's 'Viksit Bharat' journey: EY report
New Delhi [India], May 28 (ANI): An increased capital expenditure and focus on rare earth minerals may shape India's Viksit Bharat journey, according to a report by EY. It suggested that policy measures must balance consumption support with increased capital expenditure.
Also, India's long-term growth relies on building resilience through self-reliance in critical minerals. Critical minerals are those minerals that are essential for economic development and national security.
In June 2023, India has identified at least 30 critical minerals taking into account its requirements for sectors like defence, agriculture, energy, pharmaceutical, and telecom.
India has launched a National Critical Mineral Mission in 2025 to address this, but further support from both the public and private sectors will be important, EY said. Strengthening partnerships with countries rich in rare earth resources could also help reduce supply chain risks.
According to the EY Economy Watch May edition, India's economic growth for 2025-26 is expected to moderate, influenced by a mix of global and domestic developments.
Yet, the EY report said India remains one of the fastest-growing major economies, supported by resilient domestic demand, easing inflation, and an accommodative monetary policy linked to prospects of revival in private investment.
As per EY report analysis, global factors are largely contributing to a cautious outlook. These include continuing supply chain disruptions, the impact of recent tariff measures by the US, and broader uncertainties in global trade and geopolitical developments.
EY report suggests that in the near term, India may need to rely on a balanced mix of monetary and fiscal policies for sustaining the growth momentum. On the monetary front, a continuation of the ongoing rate cut cycle could provide support to consumption and investment.
On the fiscal side, reviving the momentum in public investment especially the government's capital expenditure, which witnessed a moderation in growth in 2024-25, will be important to sustain economic activity.
DK Srivastava, Chief Policy Advisor, EY India said, 'While India's medium-term prospects remain strong, current global headwinds and domestic challenges call for supportive fiscal and monetary policies. Over the long run, sectors linked to technology and clean energy will play a key role in driving sustainable growth. Building resilience through self-reliance in critical minerals, especially in rare earths, can help India move closer to its Viksit Bharat aspirations.' (ANI)

India's GDP growth expected to moderate in FY26: EY Economy Watch
India's gross domestic product (GDP) growth is expected to slow down in this fiscal due to both global and domestic factors, according to EY's latest Economy Watch report, which said the country is likely to remain one of the fastest-growing large economies despite the expected moderation. The factors leading to a cautious outlook include problems in supply chains, recent US tariffs and general uncertainty in global trade and geopolitics. India's GDP growth may slow down in this fiscal due to both global and domestic factors, including supply chain problems, US tariffs and general uncertainty in global trade and geopolitics, an EY report said. The country is likely to be one of the fastest-growing large economies despite the likely moderation due to strong domestic demand, lower inflation and supportive monetary policies, it noted. The country's growth will be due to strong domestic demand, lower inflation and supportive monetary policies that may encourage private investment, it noted. The country's government may have to carefully mix monetary and fiscal policies to maintain growth in the near future, EY cautioned. "On the monetary front, a continuation of the ongoing rate cut cycle could provide support to consumption and investment. On the fiscal side, reviving the momentum in public investment, especially GoI's [government of India] capital expenditure, which witnessed a moderation in growth in FY25, will be important to sustain economic activity," EY added. The country's consumer price index-based inflation eased to a 69-month low of 3.2 per cent in April this year, while manufacturing purchasing managers' index increased to a ten-month high of 58.2 in the month. Merchandise trade deficit increased to a six-month high of $26.4 billion in April, owing to a sharp increase in growth in imports. Fibre2Fashion News Desk (DS)

AM/NS India launches two new patented steel products under Optigal
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) on Friday announced the launch of two products — Optigal Prime and Optigal Pinnacle — in its premium colour-coated steel portfolio, Optigal. With this launch, AM/NS India strengthens its position in the colour-coated steel market in India, introducing European-standard, highly corrosion-resistant steel for use in high-end infrastructure and construction projects such as state-of-the-art airports, railway stations, highways, and large buildings for the first time. Colour-coated steel is used in a variety of applications, primarily in construction, home appliances, furniture, and transportation. It is also popular for roofing, wall cladding, architectural facades, and interior decoration due to its durability, aesthetic appeal, and weather resistance. Major companies such as JSW Steel, Tata Steel, and Essar Steel are significant players in this sector. AM/NS is pioneering a new market segment in high-quality C4 specialty steel, previously unavailable in India, where it now stands as the sole domestic producer, said Ranjan Dhar, Director and Vice President of Sales and Marketing, at a press conference. The product will support Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for accelerated development, which is key to achieving a Viksit Bharat. The steelmaker is targeting a dominant position in this segment and a 25 per cent share in the overall colour-coated steel market, Dhar added. The colour-coated steel segment in India, currently estimated at 3.4 million tonnes (mt), is growing at a sustained pace of around 10 per cent annually. The addition of two new specialised Optigal offerings will bring AM/NS India closer to its goal of securing 25 per cent of the market within the next two to three years, Dhar said. Optigal Prime is suited for urban and moderately corrosive environments, offering a 15-year warranty. Available in advanced finishes such as Silicon Modified Polyester (SMP), Super Durable Polyester (SDP), and PVDF, it is an ideal choice for roofing, cladding, and a range of other construction needs. Backed by a 25-year warranty, Optigal Pinnacle is designed for harsh industrial and coastal conditions, featuring high-performance PU/PA coatings that offer superior resistance to moisture, UV rays, and extreme temperatures — making it suitable for demanding applications such as airports, warehouses, and marine-facing buildings. AM/NS has already secured its first order, Dhar noted, although he did not disclose the order size. Six specialised variants of Optigal Prime and Optigal Pinnacle will be available — high gloss, anti-dust, anti-graffiti, anti-static, anti-microbial, and cool roof — catering to diverse requirements for high-performance steel solutions in India's rapidly expanding construction and infrastructure sectors. These variants have been developed using advanced zinc-aluminium-magnesium technology to deliver superior protection from corrosion and weathering — up to three times that of conventional coatings. As part of AM/NS India's commitment to the 'Make in India' initiative, these steel solutions have been designed with an eco-conscious approach — featuring low VOC emissions, no heavy metals or hexavalent chromium, and 100 per cent recyclability, making them an excellent choice for sustainable and future-ready construction. Optigal products are being manufactured at the company's state-of-the-art facility in Pune, Maharashtra. The company's colour-coated steel capacity currently stands at about 700,000 tonnes annually, with plans to expand to 1 mt soon. On exports of these products, Dhar said the company will first cater to domestic demand and then look at West Asian countries if opportunities emerge.

Centre notifies guidelines for prevention and regulation of illegal listing and sale of radio equipment
New Delhi [India], May 30 (ANI): The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, has notified guidelines for the prevention and regulation of illegal listing and sale of radio equipment, including walkie-talkies, on e-commerce platforms. These guidelines have been notified to curb the unauthorised sale of wireless devices that may pose risks to consumer safety, mislead consumers regarding their legal position and interfere with critical communication networks, including those used by law enforcement and emergency services, the official statement said. These guidelines can be accessed on the department website through the following link. The guidelines were finalised following extensive inter-ministerial consultations with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Key regulatory and security considerations provided by both departments have been incorporated into the final framework to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive approach. It was observed that walkie-talkies are being sold on e-commerce platforms without mandatory and clear disclosures regarding the requirement for a wireless operating license or compliance with applicable laws. The product listings for walkie-talkies do not specify whether the device requires a license from the concerned authority for use. The omission of details such as frequency range, licensing obligations under the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, or the Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1933, and the Use of Low Power, Very Low Power Short Range Radio Frequency Devices (Exemption from Licensing Requirement) Rules, 2018 and the potential legal consequences of unauthorized use, misleads consumers into believing that the devices are freely operable by the general public. Key highlights of the guidelines are as under: *Mandates that only authorised and compliant walkie-talkie devices operating on permitted frequencies are listed for sale on online platforms. *Product listings to specify frequency ranges and other technical parameters, and include proof of regulatory approval (Equipment Type Approval). *Requires e-commerce entities to undertake due diligence and verify regulatory compliance, including licensing where applicable and listings lacking frequency information or necessary certification should be taken down. *Prohibits misleading advertisements or product descriptions that may misinform consumers about the legal usage of such devices. *Sellers should ensure that equipment listed for sale does not operate on frequencies that are not exempt from the requirement of frequency assignment and authorisation by the DOT, and ensure that the frequency bands in the product description are clearly labelled. *Outlines penalties and enforcement mechanisms for violations in accordance with the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. With these guidelines, the Department aims to: *Ensure platforms perform due diligence before listing such products. *Mandate verification of seller credentials and certification. *Introduce automated monitoring and takedown mechanisms for unauthorised listings. *Promote consumer awareness through proper disclosures. *Enforce penalties and platform liability in case of non-compliance The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) had earlier issued thirteen notices against 16, 970 product listings to leading digital marketplaces against the listing and sale of walkie-talkies on e-commerce platforms without proper frequency disclosure, licensing information, or Equipment Type Approval (ETA), thereby, constituting violation of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. These platforms are under constant monitoring and examination, in addition to notification of the guidelines. (ANI)
