Durban City brace for historic first KZN derby against Golden Arrows

Durban City FC will step into uncharted territory on Tuesday evening when they contest their first-ever KwaZulu-Natal derby in the Betway Premiership against Golden Arrows at Chatsworth Stadium, with kick-off set for 7.30pm.
Having begun life in the top flight with encouraging results, the newcomers will approach this clash with a balance of confidence and caution.
For a club still finding its rhythm among the elite, the magnitude of facing an established KZN side in a derby setting will test their character as much as their ability. City have made a strong case for themselves in the early rounds.
Under Gavin Hunt's experienced hand, they have opened the season with back-to-back victories, a statement that has raised eyebrows across the league and set the tone for their campaign. Now, the derby will not only provide a litmus test of their progress but also a symbolic milestone in the club's modern era.
I say it again, we know you were harshly done by the municipality but for the sake of football return this club back to Maritzburg. No wrong can do right another wrong right. Be the bigger biggest person and take this club back home for the sake of the club, football and people. — Computha Mdletshe (@khomputha1) August 17, 2025

Attacking midfielder Haashim Domingo has been central to that progress, and he believes the collective mentality has carried City through the early battles.
'I think we, we started very well,' said Domingo.
"We executed the coaches' plans and the technical staff's plans very well. I think what will be very important for us is to be consistent, to persevere, and to continue putting in the hard work. I think that really helped us a lot, with the start of the campaign.
"I think in the first two games, what we did really well was that we maintained our mentality. Our never-give-up spirit.
"We played exactly to the coaches' plans, and I think that really helped us. That's what we did right in those first two games. You know, the mentality, the winning mentality, the fight, and the desire to win.'
While City have enjoyed the perfect start, Arrows have had a mixed opening. They fell to Siwelele FC on the opening weekend but responded with an emphatic KZN derby win of their own, overcoming Richards Bay with style last Tuesday.

Kaizer Chiefs transfer news: Zajmovic, Baartman, Nabi, new striker
Kaizer Chiefs have made a total of seven new signings this transfer period but expect more to come in the next few weeks. Last week, Amakhosi announced the signing of Asanele Velebayi for free after the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) declared the ex-Cape Town Spurs star a free agent. Another former Spurs player that Chiefs are set to sign is Luke Baartman. The case regarding Baartman is still pending and the PSL should deliver their verdict in the coming days. Amakhosi missed out on former TS Galaxy forward Dzenan Zajmovic. The Serbian striker was linked with Chiefs but has since resurfaced in Iran, signing with Zob Ahan after an impressive season in which he scored 12 goals in all competitions for the Rockets. Zajmovic had been linked with a move to Naturena but ultimately decided to pursue opportunities elsewhere following a period during which he was open to offers from Premier Soccer League clubs. Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro is another option for the Soweot giants. He is contracted with Mamelodi Sundowns but Kaizer Chiefs can sign him on loan before the transfer window closes. The Nigerian spent last season on loan with AmaZulu and is expected to leave Chloorkop in the coming weeks. With the league having kicked off over a week ago, Amakhosi fans are wondering when Nasreddine Nabi will return to the team. The Chiefs coach left the country to attend his wife just before the Betway Premiership started. The club have not announced his return. 'How Kaizer Chiefs worked on their weakness'
Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele has highlighted some problems the team has to fix this season. Despite winning their opening two matches, the 28-year-old midfield maestro feels the team is far from perfect this season. Amakhosi are joint top of the Betway Premiership with six points and could be three points clear if they defeat Richards Bay on Tuesday. 'Our problem has been conceding on transitions, so we are trying to be in control, especially in the opponents' half more so that we can create more opportunities and maintain control in the opponents' half,' Cele told the media. 'Those are the things we are trying to improve on tactically. Playing for this club, the expectations will always be there, and we are here because we want to handle the expectations and feed people what they are expecting, which is good results.' The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder has also pointed out the team's impressive defence this season as they are yet to concede. 'Obviously, not everything will be perfect, and we are trying to improve in how we play and how we create opportunities, and how we maintain not conceding after having not conceded in the two games. We are trying to minimise teams from creating opportunities against us, and then us creating more. It is important for a team like us to win home games. It will help even improve the numbers at the stadium because FNB is a huge stadium. 'For us, getting good results and performances are going to bring a better atmosphere. We want teams to feel it is our home, so it is important. I think in every position it is important to have competition. It makes us better. ' 'If you look at our games, we have a lot of games, so we need that squad depth in every position. Obviously, with the midfield you can see that there is that depth and competition which is healthy for the team. Playing in so many competitions, we want to compete everywhere, so it is important for the squad to have depth,' Cele added.
