Indian economy size USD 15 tn in PPP term, more than half of US economy: NITI VC Bery

The Print4 days ago

'There has been a lot in the newspapers about our being the fourth largest economy. Those are all measured at market prices, but the real way of measuring productivity is purchasing power parity.
The purchasing power parity (PPP) is the amount of currency units required to purchase a basket of goods and services that can be purchased with one unit of the reference economy's currency.
New Delhi, May 29 (PTI) NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Suman Bery on Thursday said that the size of the Indian economy in the purchasing power parity (PPP) term is already USD 15 trillion, which is more than half the size of the US economy.
'And while we are USD 4 trillion GDP at market prices, at PPP term, we are USD 15 trillion economy,'Bery said while addressing the Annual Business Summit 2025 of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
He said that economists tend to measure labour productivity at purchasing power parity as PPP measures the real size of the economy of countries against the size of the US economy.
'And so while we (the size of India economy in PPP term) are at at USD 15 trillion, the United States is at USD 29 trillion.
'So we are roughly half the world size of the US economy,' he said.
Bery said India needs to diversify its sources of supply, so the country would not have to depend on a particular supplier.
He also suggested that India should leverage global knowledge and innovate locally, while reforming markets and building skills.
The NITI Aayog vice chairman also emphasised that the states should utilise opportunities of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) which were signed by the Union government.
He said competitiveness should not only be restricted to manufacturing but should extend to services as well.
Bery said India's labour productivity is the lowest among the G20 nations and a sustained rise in productivity of labour is crucial for India to leverage its demographic dividend.
'India's track record has not been bad in terms of growth productivity, but it needs to get better.
'Our problem is our low level of labour productivity, not only with respect to the US but also with respect to some of our peers, such as China and other peers in ASEAN,' he said.
Noting that rising labour productivity leads to faster growth in real incomes, Bery said the fact that that has not been happening as fast as people's aspirations, is what is leading to the skewing for government jobs.
Bery pointed out that India has maintained an average growth rate of 6.5 per cent for the 30 years since 1991 reforms to the COVID period in 2021, suggesting that the roots of resilience in India are as much in our institutions as they are in our policies.
'Deep institutional sources of resilience are in place, but we mustn't be complacent, because we need to up our game for all kinds of reasons,' he said.
According to Bery, industrialisation is another challenge facing the country and policy lessons could be drawn from countries such as China, Japan and South Korea even though each country must work out its own path and productivity trajectory. PTI BKS MR

Real cost of flying 40 pc lower than a decade ago, says IATA DG

New Delhi, Jun 2 (PTI) The real cost of flying has fallen 40 per cent than a decade ago despite rising cost and tax challenges, global airlines' grouping IATA's Director General Willie Walsh said on Monday as the number of air travellers is projected to cross 5 billion annually. At the IATA annual general meeting, which is taking place in India after 42 years, Walsh also said the rate of growth in the airlines' industry has slowed down as a result of supply chain issues. The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents over 350 carriers globally, on Monday projected that airlines will make a profit of USD 36 billion on USD 979 billion revenues. The expected profit this year translates to a net margin of 3.7 per cent or USD 7.20 net profit per passenger. "Our profitability is not commensurate to the enormous value that we create at the heart of a value chain supporting 3.9 per cent of global GDP and providing and supporting jobs for 86.5 million people," Walsh said. Despite ever increasing cost and tax challenges, he said the real cost of flying is 40 per cent less than a decade ago. India is one of the fastest growing civil aviation markets in the world and air traffic demand is on the rise while there have been concerns about airfare trajectory. Meanwhile, referring to the supply chain issues that have been impacting the aviation industry, the IATA DG said that regarding aircraft, the manufacturing sector is failing badly. "The delivery backlog of 17,000 implies a 14-year wait between ordering and delivery... the number of deliveries scheduled for 2025 is 26 per cent less than what was promised a year ago," he said. More than 1,100 aircraft under 10 years of age are in storage, which Walsh said is 3.8 per cent of the entire fleet, nearly three times the pre-pandemic comparison of 1.3 per cent. Also, the annual fleet replacement rate of 3 per cent is well below the normal 5-6 per cent. "This hits revenues because some demand goes unmet. And scarcity pushes up maintenance and leasing costs. "It's just not acceptable that manufacturers estimate it could take until the end of the decade to sort this mess out," Walsh said as he also advocated for keeping aerospace outside of trade wars. According to the IATA DG, bad regulation can destroy value and stand in the way of affordability. "The litmus test for any regulation is cost-benefit analysis. As business leaders we take this much more seriously than regulators. They are not playing with their own money and the difference between political success and solving a problem is often wide. That makes bad regulation far too prevalent," he said. While talking about safety, Walsh said less than half of the accident investigations over the last six years have been published a final report. "Missing insights from accident reports are lost safety opportunities," he noted. Last year, there were seven fatal accidents among 40.6 million flights, and 244 fatalities among 4.8 billion passengers. In the last 12 months, Walsh said two civil aircraft were downed in conflict zones, several airports with civilian aircraft on the ground were bombed in military operations, and incidents of interference with navigation systems near conflicts rose sharply.

French Firm Servier Drops Exclusive Deal For Selling High BP Drugs After Chemists' Pushback

Last Updated: After successful mediation by offline chemists, Servier promptly withdrew the agreement – which is seen as a positive step towards preserving the fairness of open trade practices. In a major development impacting the pharmaceutical distribution landscape in India, an Indian arm of French drugmaker Servier has officially withdrawn its exclusive distribution agreement for its anti-hypertensive product line, reverting to conventional distribution practices. The move comes after the apex lobby of offline chemists, All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), raised concerns, alleging the potential monopolistic implications of Servier's deal with Entero Healthcare, a supply chain specialist company. AIOCD represents more than 12 lakh chemists and distributors in India, pushing Servier to discontinue the arrangement of supplying certain products via Entero. The majority of the AIOCD's partners refused to sell the drugs sold by the French drugmaker. After facing industry pushback, in a letter dated May 26, 2025, Servier India informed its trade partners that it has 'discontinued exclusive distribution arrangement for anti-hypertensive range of products" with immediate effect. The letter has been seen by News18. This update follows a formal communication by AIOCD on May 28, addressing the issue. The letter detailed how many members of the organisation had expressed concerns over the exclusivity agreement, warning that it could lead to discriminatory trade practices, shortages in essential medications, and the formation of monopolistic structures within the pharmaceutical supply chain. AIOCD, in a letter, said that the organisation mediated with Servier to ensure a fair resolution. 'After successful mediation by AIOCD, the company has promptly withdrawn the said exclusive distribution agreement. This is a positive and encouraging step toward preserving the balance and fairness in our open trade practices," the letter read. The development is being seen as a victory for chemists and druggists across India, many of whom feared market distortions and reduced access to essential medicines due to exclusive arrangements. 'We have had fruitful discussions with AIOCD. Servier India is focused on improving patient access to our quality medicines. We will continue to engage constructively with all stakeholders," Aurelien Breton, managing director, Servier India told News18. Brenton told News18 that he is thankful to AIOCD 'for the constructive dialogue, which allowed us to resolve the matter amicably in the interest of the healthcare community and patients at large." 'Servier is a global pharmaceutical group governed by a nonprofit foundation, committed to making a meaningful social impact for patients and contributing to a sustainable world." Headquartered in France, Servier operates in around 140 countries. Sources close to the development told News18 that, 'Servier's management rushed the distributor appointment, with inadequate market assessment and due diligence. However, now, it has made right decision following the general rules of the Indian pharma trade market." First Published: June 02, 2025, 12:40 IST

Bank of Maharashtra to Crompton Greaves - Vinay Rajani of HDFC Sec suggests these 3 stocks to buy in the near-term

Stock market today: The Indian stock markets began the new week on a downbeat trend, influenced by global worries in spite of solid domestic GDP data. The benchmark indices fell as investor sentiment was affected by the renewed tariff threats from US President Donald Trump. At 12:34 IST, the Nifty 50 index was trading at 24,715 . 95, showing a drop of 35.70 points or 0.15%. Sensex was trading lower at 81,325.42, decreasing by 125.59 points or 0.15%. This pressure emerged following Trump's announcement to modify tariffs on steel and aluminum, which has rekindled fears of a trade conflict and economic pressures. Market analysts pointed out that although India's macroeconomic fundamentals are robust, as demonstrated by the strong GDP figures, the external challenges posed by the US tariff adjustments have overshadowed domestic gains. The potential for a broader impact on global trade and capital movements has led investors to exercise caution. Vinay Rajani of HDFC Securities recommends Bank of Maharashtra, Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Ltd, and City Union Bank Ltd. Check out his overall market views. Nifty 50 continued its consolidation for the second consecutive week with a weekly fall of 0.41%. Bank Nifty managed to outperform Nifty 50 with a gain of 0.33% and closed at an all-time high. The lower band of the consolidation is placed near 24,400 levels, below which short term would turn bearish. Above 25,116, Nifty 50 could move towards immediate resistance of 25,300 odd levels, which happens to be 78.6% retracement of the entire fall seen from all time high of 26277 to recent swing low of 21743. Above 25300, We expect Nifty 50 to hit a new all-time high above 26277 and go beyond. Midcap and Microcap indices have been showing strength, which shows the strong breadth in the market. The Bank Nifty index has closed at fresh all-time highs with recent outperformance. Both PSU and Private bank stocks are looking strong on the chart and likely to take a lead in the coming sessions. Nifty Capital Market index has given a fresh breakout above its previous all-time highs. Considering the momentum and the chart setup, this index is likely to extend its gain in the coming days. Ratio Chart of Copper v/s Gold indicates that Copper should start outperforming gold from here for the medium to long term. Historically, Copper used to have a positive correlation with equity markets. Primary trend is bullish but short-term consolidation is going on in the Nifty 50. Traders should continue to hold on to the long positions with 24,462 stoploss in the Nifty 50. Any level above 25,116 will confirm the fresh bullish breakout.
