Little Leaguer reveals awkward Shohei Ohtani run-in: ‘Never liked him ever since'

New York Post7 hours ago
Not everybody admires Shohei Ohtani.
A young girl playing for Australia's Little League World Series baseball team explained why she's not a fan of the two-way Dodgers superstar in an interview during the Mets-Mariners game on 'Sunday Night Baseball's' KidsCast.
Monica Arcuri from Brisbane said she went to Anaheim to see the Angels play in 2023 and saw Ohtani hit a home run off Blue Jays pitcher Yusei Kikuchi.

'He hit a home run into an area where the fans couldn't go, and then this guy got the ball and gave it to my brother,' Arcuri explained. 'So the next day we went to the VIP box at the front and I asked for his signature, but all he gave me was a side eye and not a nice glance. So after that, I've never liked him ever since. He's not really humble. Not my style.'
Ohtani did hit a home run off Kikuchi in the third inning of an April 9, 2023, game at Angel Stadium, the ball landing near the rock formation in center field.
Both Ohtani and Kikuchi attended Hanamaki Higashi High School in Japan, though not at the same time.

2023 was Ohtani's last season with the Angels before he signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers, though $680 million of that is deferred. Ohtani did not pitch last season due to elbow surgery, but helped lead the Dodgers to a World Series victory and won the NL MVP.
The 31-year-old recently made headlines because he and his agent, Nez Balelo, were sued by a Hawaii real estate investor and broker for allegedly getting them fired from a $240 million luxury housing development on the Hapuna Coast.

Nats' Cairo and Mets' Mendoza become first Venezuelans to manage against each other in MLB

WASHINGTON (AP) — Miguel Cairo beamed with pride as the Washington Nationals' interim manager spoke about the hard work it took for him and his Venezuelan countryman, Carlos Mendoza, to get jobs leading Major League Baseball teams. On Tuesday night, Cairo and Mendoza of the New York Mets became the first Venezuelans in big league history to manage against each other. 'It's two countrymen, friends, and now to be exchanging the lineup at home plate, we're excited about it. We're proud to represent the Latinos in the United States, represent our country in the United States, and of course represent our organizations,' Cairo said. 'To me, it's a dream come true.' Mendoza was hired by the Mets after the 2023 season, becoming the third Venezuelan manager in major league history. Cairo became the fourth when Washington promoted him to interim manager in July after firing Dave Martinez. 'It's just an honor for both of us,' Mendoza said. 'I'm humbled by it. You know, this is a big deal back home. I didn't recognize that until it was brought up to me. But yeah, it's a special day.' The 51-year-old Cairo and the 45-year-old Mendoza both have ties to the New York Yankees organization. The Yankees were one of nine teams Cairo played for during a 17-year career, and Mendoza was a longtime coach with the organization before the Mets hired him. The two overlapped when Cairo worked as a Yankees minor league infield coordinator. Ozzie Guillén was the first Venezuelan to manage in the majors. He led the Chicago White Sox from 2004-11 and won a World Series title in 2005, then managed the Miami Marlins in 2012. Al Pedrique was Arizona's manager for half of the 2024 season, but the Diamondbacks and White Sox did not play each other that year. 'You have to through the minor leagues, you have work your way up. You have to really work,' he said. 'Nothing is easy and you've got to earn it. And, you know, he earned it. I think I earned it.' ___
