Spencer Schwellenbach, Braves too strong for Phillies
June 29 - Spencer Schwellenbach set a career high with 12 strikeouts and Sean Murphy hit a grand slam to lead the host Atlanta Braves to a 6-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday to end their three-game losing streak.
The win squared the three-game series and evened the season series between the teams at 4-4.
Schwellenbach (7-4) pitched seven innings and allowed one run on three hits and one walk. In five career starts against Phillies, Schwellenbach is 3-0 with a 2.01 ERA.
The Atlanta bullpen completed the game. Raisel Iglesias struck out two while working a scoreless eighth and Rafael Montero pitched a perfect ninth inning.
Murphy's slam, the second of his career, carried 455 feet to left field against reliever Jordan Romano in the seventh inning. The home run, Murphy's 10th, was his first since May 29, also against Philadelphia, and was Atlanta's first bases-loaded home run of the season.
Philadelphia starter Jesus Luzardo (7-4) pitched five innings and allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.
Atlanta ended an 18-inning scoreless streak by scoring a run in the first inning on Austin Riley's infield single.
Atlanta made it 2-0 with a run in the second inning. Nick Allen drove in Eli White with a single, but Stuart Fairchild was easily thrown out at the plate by left fielder Max Kepler to short-circuit the rally.
The Phillies got on the board in the sixth when Brandon Marsh singled -- ending a string of 15 consecutive batters retired by Schwellenbach -- stole second base and scored on Alec Bohm's two-out single. Bohm had been 1-for-16 on the road trip and fanned in his first two at-bats.
Atlanta's Matt Olson went 2-for-5 with a double on Saturday and extended his league-best and career-high on-base streak to 29 games.
The Braves switched their starting lineup and sat down struggling center fielder Michael Harris II, who is in an 0-for-21 slump.

NBA's Malik Beasley under federal investigation over gambling allegations
NBA free agent Malik Beasley is under investigation by the US district attorney's office regarding gambling allegations tied to league games, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment on the matter. ESPN was the first to report on the investigation and said the allegations are believed to be related to the 2023-24 season when Beasley played for the Milwaukee Bucks. 'We are cooperating with the federal prosecutors' investigation,' NBA spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement released on Sunday. 'There have been no charges against Malik,' Steve Haney, Beasley's attorney, told the AP. 'It's just an investigation at this point. We hope people reserve judgement until he's charged – or if he's charged. It's not uncommon for there to be a federal investigation.' The probe into the 28-year-old comes 14 months after the NBA issued a lifetime ban for Toronto's Jontay Porter, who was linked to a prop bet investigation and eventually pleaded guilty to committing wire fraud. This past season, the Wall Street Journal reported that Terry Rozier – then of the Charlotte Hornets – was under investigation for activity related to unusual betting patterns surrounding him in a March 2023 game. Rozier, now of the Miami Heat, has not been charged with any crime, nor has he faced any sanction from the NBA. Porter's ban came after a similar investigation into his performance and 'prop bets' – wagers where bettors can choose whether a player will reach a certain statistical standard or not during a game. The Porter investigation started once the league learned about unusual gambling patterns surrounding Porter's performance in a game in March 2024. The league determined that Porter gave a bettor information about his own health status prior to the game and said that another individual – known to be an NBA bettor – placed an $80,000 bet that Porter would not hit the numbers set for him in parlays through an online sports book. That bet would have won $1.1m. US sports leagues have also come under criticism for promoting gambling during games, while simultaneously applying heavy punishments to players found guilty of betting. Beasley signed last year with the Pistons, taking a one-year contract for $6m in the hopes of cashing in this summer as a free agent. A second person, speaking to AP on condition of anonymity because no deal was announced, said Detroit was 'very interested' in re-signing Beasley to a multi-year contract – which ESPN reported to be worth $42m – this summer. Those talks may be in jeopardy, given the uncertainty regarding the federal probe. He has $59.5m in career earnings. Beasley made a single-season, franchise-record 319 three-pointers in the regular season. He helped Detroit make the playoffs for the first time since 2019 and end an NBA-record 15-game postseason losing streak in the first round against the New York Knicks. Beasley averaged 16.3 points last season and has averaged 11.7 points over his career with Denver, Minnesota, Utah, the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee and Detroit. June 29 - Addison Barger and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. each hit a solo home run to propel the visiting Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. The home runs came back-to-back in the top of the first against Walker Buehler. It was Barger's ninth home run of the season, and homer No. 12 for Guerrero. Carlos Narvaez hit his seventh home run for Boston, which has lost seven of its last eight games. The Red Sox received two hits from rookie Roman Anthony, who has five hits in his last two games. Nathan Lukes collected two hits and an RBI for Toronto, which won twice in the three-game series. Yariel Rodriguez (2-0) picked up the win for tossing 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief after starter Eric Lauer exited the game with one out in the fifth. Jeff Hoffman struck out the side in the ninth to record his 18th save. Buehler (5-6) took the loss after he allowed four runs on four hits in four innings. He walked three and struck out three.
