700 Goa Police recruits pass out from Lachit Borphukan Academy
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Goa chief minister Promod Sawant said the 43 weeks of basic training given to the recruits in Assam will help strengthen the relationship between the two states. The recruits, belonging to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd India Reserve Battalions, included 569 males and 131 females.
"It is an honour for us that we have been able to train police persons from other states at the LBPA here, which was inaugurated by home minister Amit Shah," Sarma said. "Earlier, we also trained policemen from Manipur here. Although Goa is located far away from Assam, I hope that this event today has reduced the physical distance between the two states. Lots of people from Assam also work and live in Goa and I only hope that the Goa government will extend their cooperation whenever they are in distress," the Assam chief minister said.
Sawant said, "700 Goa Police recruits will step into service as constables, shaped by training at Assam's Lachit Borphukan Police Academy. This is a proud outcome of Goa-Assam collaboration for law enforcement and national security." Sawant urged the new recruits to be sensitive to the people of Assam while performing their duties in Goa.

21 deported to Bangladesh, says Assam CM

Sarma, on becoming Assam's chief minister in May 2021, had announced that his priority was to resolve long-standing boundary disputes with the neighbouring states. Subsequently, three regional committees were set up in August 2021 to resolve the issues in a phased manner. The regional committees submitted their recommendations which were handed over to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi by the two chief ministers, followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on March 29, 2022 to resolve disputes in six of the 12 areas. According to the agreement, 36.79 sq km of the disputed area was taken up for settlement in the first phase, with Assam getting full control of 18.51 sq km and Meghalaya 18.28 sq km of land.
