What is hops and how does it change the taste of beer?
"Humulus lupulus" is not a magic trick from the new Harry Potter series, although it does have something magical, especially when we talk about beer. This technical term refers to hops, defined by experts as the secret (and fundamental) ingredient of this beverage because it balances its flavor (adding bitterness) and defines its aroma. You might also be interested in: What to drink when temperatures drop Hops is a climbing plant that belongs to the Cannabaceae family—a close relative of cannabis—and has antioxidant properties, which help slow down the deterioration of the drink. Although it may have become trendy recently with the hype around IPA (a variety in which bitter flavors and citrusy and floral aromas predominate), it has been an ingredient accompanying beer production since the year 800. How does hops influence the flavor of beer? There are many varieties of hops that contribute different notes and define each beer style. Some are used to add bitterness, others to accentuate aroma. The first define the beer's profile depending on their amount: more 'malty' or sweet (when malt predominates) or more 'hoppy' or bitter (when hops do). The latter vary depending on their origin: some are associated with citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit, orange), others more with tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, passion fruit), and others more earthy (fresh-cut grass, pine, herbs). Thus, an Imperial IPA, which is made with two varieties of hops, has a rather bitter taste and a distinctive aroma. On the other hand, an Imperial APA, which has only one variety, achieves a more moderate taste and a more intense aroma than the former because, once brewed, it is dry-hopped. This final touch makes it more complex and intense to the nose but not as bitter when it hits the palate. More hops, more spices Since at Time Out we like to always give you tips and recommendations, here is a rule that will help you next time you want to pair a beer with a dish: If it's a more 'hoppy' beer (like an Imperial IPA), always choose a spicy dish, such as Mexican, Indian, or something with high fat content like roasted meats or dishes with melted cheeses. If you're going for a more 'malty' beer (like an Imperial Red), the best match will always be foods with sauces, slow-cooked meats, or cured cold cuts.

The best tourist attraction in London
It's not difficult to see why tourists flock to London in their millions each and every year. Steeped in centuries of history and teeming with all sorts of culture, London isn't short on things to do or see. Some people may come here for the food, others for the history, some for the architecture, others for the art, music and nightlife. But there are several sights in the city that are considered unmissable for anyone popping their London cherry. To find out which of them are the most popular, researchers budget hotel chain, Travelodge, quizzed 13,500 people on their favourite London tourist attraction. The votes were counted and (drumroll please) the Tower of London came out on top. Attracting more than three million people a year, the tower houses 900 years worth of British history, from Henry VIII's codpiece to medieval torture tools to the dazzling Crown Jewels. If you have plans to visit the Tower, we recommend joining a tour led by one of the costumed Yeoman Warders (aka Beefeaters) who live and work there. Covent Garden, synonymous with theatre, shopping, street entertainment and fine dining, was the second most popular place, according to Travelodge's survey. It's got the spectacular Royal Opera House, the iconic central piazza that hosts Covent Garden market and a bunch of Time Out-approved restaurants, like Savoy Grill, Tandoor Chop House and Parsons. In third place was royal HQ, Buckingham Palace. While much of the palace is private, there's still plenty for non blue-bloods to check out. Other must-see London landmarks to make the top 10 were Big Ben, Borough Market, Camden Market and the Natural History Museum. A Travelodge spokesperson said: 'It's no surprise that the top spots were taken by iconic, historic classics like the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace, but it's also great to see people rate newer attractions such as Battersea Power Station and Sky Garden too.' If we're looking at actual visitor numbers though, data from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions recently revealed that the British Museum was the most visited attraction in not only London, but the whole of the UK for 2024. If last year was the summer of the Eras tour, this summer is definitely for the Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour. We are mere days away from Beyoncé's return to London for a whopping six nights at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Queen Bey last graced London stages in 2023 for her Renaissance tour, and Cowboy Carter is set to be just as big and just as glam, although quite a bit more country. For obvious reasons, stadiums have pretty strict rules around bags and what you can have in them. Some stuff is common sense – best to leave your explosives and sharp objects at home – but what you might not know is that there is a specific size of bag you have stay within, sort of like boarding a plane except you won't get charged £80 if it's oversized, you'll just get turned away. Each person is allowed one small, personal bag, which must be A4 or smaller. Certain exemptions can be made for medical equipment, but you'll have to let the stadium know ahead of time by filling in their bag exemption form, which you can find here. Backpacks will likely be oversized. Instead, the venue recommends a clear carrier bag, a drawstring bag, or a laptop sleeve. On their website, Spurs do recommend their own club branded bags, but other brands are permitted too. You will also be allowed small clutches or handbags. The stadium states that 'all permissible bags will be carefully searched… those choosing to bring a bag to the stadium, which meets the above criteria, should be aware that they will be delayed whilst their bag is searched by our security team'. What size bag can I bring into the stadium? A4, the maximum size of bag you can bring to the concert, is 21cm long and 30cm high. Your bag has to be this size without being folded, and any bags which do not adhere to policy can be confiscated and not returned. Beyoncé Tottenham Hotspur Stadium banned items As we mentioned before, anything sharp or explosive is generally a no-go. That said, there are a few banned items you might not have considered.
