A 25-year-old alleged drug trafficker man was arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport after landing from Brazil.
The woman who flew in from Brazil and connected her flight in Doha, Qatar, was arrested on Tuesday.
"Acting on intelligence, a team comprising Crime Intelligence Counter Narcotics Intel Gauteng, ORTIA SAPS Tactical Team, Border Management Authority (BMA), and private security successfully identified and intercepted the Brazilian national shortly after landing," said police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk.
Van Wyk said when the woman's bag was searched, police uncovered approximately 10kg of cocaine, estimated to be worth R4.2 million.
"The trafficker was also taken for a medical examination to determine whether cocaine-filled bullets were swallowed. SAPS continues to record commendable successes in dismantling transnational drug syndicates operating between South Africa and other countries," she said.
Van Wyk added that more than 25 drug traffickers have been arrested since the beginning of the year at the country's busy airport.

Kraaifontein police make multiple arrests at Operation Basadi's kick-off

CAPE TOWN - Police in Kraaifontein have made multiple arrests during the start of Operation Basadi. The operation took place on Friday, where members met at a high school in the area and searched the school bags of over 800 learners as they entered the school grounds. A mini community service centre was also set up, where police managed to service 11 respondents with protection orders for domestic violence-related cases. Members arrested a 25-year-old male for the possession of stolen goods and arrested another 33-year-old for the possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Police spokesperson Frederick Van Wyk said members checked and searched 47 vehicles around the school 'While the search continued at the school, the members searched a silver Kia Sportage and found a Norinco 7.62 calibre with eight rounds inside the spare wheel in the boot of the vehicle. The firearm with the rounds was confiscated and handed in.' said Van Wyk.

Police minister Mchunu announces closure of inquests into Gavin Watson and Marcus Jooste's deaths

An inquest into the death of late former Bosasa boss Gavin Watson was held at the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on May 30 resulting in the closure of the culpable homicide case. Image: FILE Police minister Senzo Mchunu has announced the closing of the culpable homicide case concerning the late former boss of Bosasa, Gavin Watson, following an inquest by the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court three months ago. Mchunu made the announcement in a response to parliamentary questions from DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach regarding the release of autopsy reports for both Watson and the late former CEO of Steinhoff International. Watson died when the car he was driving, a company Toyota Corolla, hit a bridge pillar near the OR Tambo International Airport on August 26, 2019, near the OR Tambo International Airport while Jooste committed suicide last year in Hermanus on March 21. Mchunu said the investigation into Watson's culpable homicide case was completed after autopsy and toxicology reports were received, following a significant delay by the Department of Health. 'The finalised case docket was forwarded to the office of the Senior Public Prosecutor on 2024/09/24, for a decision regarding prosecution,' he said. Video Player is loading. 'The findings of the Inquest Court, in terms of Section 16 of the Inquest Act, 1959 (Act No. 58 of 1959), resulted in the closing of the case of culpable homicide that had been registered,' he said. An inquest was conducted in the Hermanus Magistrate's Court after the death of the former CEO of Steinhoff International Marcus Jooste after his apparent suicide on March 21, 2024. Image: FILE Turning to Jooste's case, Mchunu said an inquest was conducted in the Hermanus Magistrate's Court after the death of Jooste, due to his apparent suicide on March 21, 2024. 'The post-mortem report was received on 25 April 2024. The blood/alcohol report was received on 2024/08/08 and the ballistic report was received on 16 October.' In March, Mchunu indicated in a parliamentary reply to Breytenbach that Jooste's ballistic and blood alcohol reports were still outstanding. At the time of his death, Jooste had been under investigation for his actions linked to the collapse of Steinhoff International, where he faced charges of fraud and racketeering. Jooste and former Steinhoff company secretary and head of legal, Stephanus Grobler, were told through their legal representatives on March 20, 2024, to hand themselves over to the Hawks two days later. Mchunu said at the time Jooste and his legal representatives were aware of the investigation since its inception in 2018 and that there was no evidence that he intended to flee from South Africa. When the Randburg Magistrate's Court last year issued the warrant of his arrest on March 20, the investigators had circulated the warrant of arrest on the electronic system of the Department of Home Affairs to alert all ports of entry and exit of the existence of the arrest warrant. 'This step was taken to prevent Jooste from leaving the Republic of South Africa,' Mchunu said. He also said the investigators had then informed Jooste's legal representatives that he should report to the Pretoria Central police station on March 22, 2024. 'The SAPS investigators circulated the arrest warrant timeously to prevent Jooste from leaving the Republic of South Africa.' He also said his legal representatives were advised because of their previous commitment that he would hand himself over. 'Neither the prosecutors and or the SAPS investigators could not have contemplated that Jooste would commit suicide,' he said. 'The SAPS had taken necessary measures to ensure he does not evade arrest by skipping the country. Therefore, the outcome remains unfortunate and there is no further consequence management considered to be necessary in this matter.'

Tragic start to Women's Month: 53-year-old woman found dead in domestic dispute

A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife in Philippi, Cape Town Image: File As Women's Month commenced on Friday, a 53-year-old woman was found dead in her home in Browns Farm, Philippi, following an alleged domestic dispute. The woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband after a drunken altercation the night before. A community member said, 'The husband left for work on Friday morning after assaulting the victim throughout the night. He locked the door and left the key at the neighbour's house. 'He told the neighbour to go to the shack and wake his wife. When she got there, she found the victim unresponsive and called the police.' According to the resident, police fetched the suspect from his workplace and arrested him. Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed a case of murder was registered at Nyanga police station following the discovery of the woman's body at about 6am on 1 August at a premises in Block 6, Link Road, Browns Farm. 'The circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation. An adult male was arrested and is due to appear in court once charged. The motive is believed to be an argument,' said Van Wyk. Anti-gender-based violence organisation Ilitha Labantu expressed concern over the killing. Spokesperson Siyabulela Monakali said: 'This horrific incident marks a grim beginning to Women's Month, a time that is meant to honour the courage and resistance of women in our country. Yet women continue to be brutalised and murdered in their homes and communities. 'We cannot claim to be making any real progress when women are never safe – not in their homes, not in public, and certainly not in intimate relationships. 'This is not an isolated case. It is part of a broader crisis of gender-based violence that has become normalised in our society, where women's bodies are sites of violence and the justice system continues to fail to act as an effective deterrent. Each life taken is a reminder of how little value is placed on the safety and dignity of women in South Africa.' Ilitha Labantu called for urgent and sustained action. 'It is not enough to issue statements of condemnation once violence has occurred. We need visible, coordinated efforts to dismantle the conditions that allow this violence to thrive – from poor policing and weak prosecution to the socio-economic vulnerabilities that trap women in abusive environments,' said Monakali. 'Until women are free from all forms of violence and abuse, we cannot claim to live in a just society. We will continue to demand justice, accountability, and protection for all women.'
