Mohammad Kaif believes Karun Nair could be the next long-game Test batter for India after Dravid, Laxman, and Pujara.
Former India international Mohammad Kaif believes Karun Nair could be the next in line in the generation of batters who can play the long game in Tests after Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Cheteshwar Pujara. Kaif said that Nair can play grounded shots and leave balls, which allows him to bat for entire days.
Nair has got an India call-up after eight years, thanks to his consistency across formats on the domestic circuit in the past couple of years. He has a record-breaking 300 to his name against England in India. His Test average reads at a spectacular 62.33 (after six matches) while his First-Class average is 49.82.
'Karun Nair can do the same work," Kaif said in a video on his YouTube channel comparing him to Pujara, Dravid and Laxman. 'He has a complete game. He plays big innings in Ranji and is coming on the back of consistent runs. He can play for an entire day. The batter who has the ability to score runs by playing grounded shots is one who plays full day. You must also have the ability to leave balls," he added.
Pujara and Dravid dominated the number three spot, which is now vacant as India have dropped Pujara and Shubman Gill has dropped himself down to number four after Virat Kohli's retirement. Another option mooted for the role is Sai Sudharsan, the Orange Cap winner in IPL 2025.
Kaif feels the Gujarat Titans youngster could be of the same mould, too.
'Sai Sudharsan, I have seen him, he looks like a complete batter. He takes less risk, has solid defense, plays spin and fast bowling very well. He is a complete package. In a format like IPL, he has scored by playing ground strokes in all matches. I think he can be a future Pujara or Rahul Dravid."
'I think Nitish Reddy will be the fourth fast bowler because he will also bat at No. 8. He can come after Jadeja. He scored a century in Australia, and he can come and pick up one or two wickets," Kaif said.
The first Test begins on Friday in Headingley, Leeds.

'Legacy Of Number 3': Fans React As Cheteshwar Pujara Hands Sai Sudharsan Test Cap

Last Updated: Fans couldn't stop the comparisons and 'baton transfer' feelings as Cheteshwar Pujara handed Sai Sudharsan his debut India cap before the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley. Former India number three Cheteshwar Pujara handed Tamil Nadu batter Sai Sudharsan his debut India cap before the first match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley in Leeds on Friday (June 20). He becomes Test number 317 and likely the new batter for the crucial one-down position. Fans on social media found it quite a wholesome moment, a passing of the baton of sorts. Pujara made his debut in 2010 as a middle-order batter but was asked to take up the number three spot permanently when Rahul Dravid retired. Pujara has not retired yet, but has been out of favor of the Test side since the World Test Championship final in 2023. Initially, Shubman Gill took over the number three position. Though he scored some runs there, he never looked quite at ease technically. After his appointment as the captain and Virat Kohli's retirement, he has decided to drop to number four, and will bat there starting from the Headingley Test. Fans on social media found Sudharsan as more of a natural fit and the team's gesture to ask Pujara — who's there as a pundit — to hand over the cap also enhanced that feeling. One user reacted: 'From one No.3 to another… 🫡 Pujara gives the Test cap to Sai Sudharsan. A beautiful passing of the torch moment at No.3. 🥹❤️" Another said: 'From the monk of No. 3 to the apprentice Pujara handing the cap to Sai Sudharsan isn't just a gesture, it's a handover of discipline, grit, and quiet defiance. A new chapter begins where the old one stood tall. 🙌" Cheteshwar Pujara hands the Test Cap over to Sai Sudharsan 🥹❤️Legacy of No 3…..!!! #SaiSudarshan #Pujara #ENGvIND — Dipanjan Chatterjee (@I_am_DipCh) June 20, 2025 As expected, Sai Sudharsan has been handed a Test cap. Dhoni set to be REPLACED as CSK captain by..., star player currently gets salary of...

MS Dhoni's CSK failed to reach IPL 2025 Playoffs. They finished in 10th and last position this season. MS Dhoni was only retained as an 'Uncapped' player for Rs 4 crore ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction last year. Speculation that Sanju Samson can replace MS Dhoni as captain in CSK in IPL 2026 ahead of even Ruturaj Gaikwad. A viral social media post is claiming Rajasthan Royals may release Sanju Samson ahead of the next IPL season, and CSK is approaching him. MS Dhoni took over as CSK captain as Ruturaj Gaikwad was injured mid-way through IPL 2025 season. But Gaikwad also failed to lift CSK to Playoffs in IPL 2024 season. Sanju Samson guided Rajasthan Royals to IPL final in 2022 where they lost to Gujarat Titans. Yashasvi Jaiswal is pushing to be Rajasthan Royals captain in IPL 2026, according to media report. That's why RR may release Samson before next auction. Sanju Samson was retained for Rs 18 crore by Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction, same as Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Ben Stokes' Honest Admission On Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's Absence: "Doesn't Mean That We..."

Ahead of the first Test of the five-match series, England captain Ben Stokes said that despite being without their three experienced players - Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R. Ashwin - it is not going to be easy for the hosts to dominate the Shubman Gill-led team because of the gigantic talent pool of the Indian cricket. Rohit and Kohli announced their retirement from the red-ball format last month, while Ashwin called time on his international career last year during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Gill's era, which is starting with the new World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle for India at Headingley on Friday, India have a herculean task of filling the big boots of the stalwarts and approaching the future with a clear mindset. "There's been a lot said about no Rohit (Sharma), no Virat (Kohli) and no Ashwin. That doesn't mean that we think it's going to be any easier than it ever has been against India. The pool of talent that Indian cricket has is just ginormous," Stokes said in the press conference on the eve of the series opener. "So, although Virat, Rohit, and Ashwin have done amazing things for their country on the field, that doesn't mean that whoever comes in to replace those individuals are going to be any less hard to bowl that out back in just because of how big the pool of talent is in India. I've spent a lot of time out of the IPL, so I know that there's a lot of it. Obviously, three massive names, three people who have done wonderful things for their country, but it's not going to be any easier for us because of those three big names out here," he added. Stokes added that his side's sole focus is limited to the India series and not thinking beyond. "Well, look, I think first and foremost, obviously it's five games against India that we're focusing on. We know it's going to be tough, as always against India. Five Test matches are very demanding on the body. So, yeah, we'll be focusing on these five games first," he said. On Chris Woakes leading the pace attack in the first Test, the all-rounder said his inclusion adds value to their side. "Since me and Baz (Brendon McCullum) have been together, I don't think we have lost a game when Chris Woakes played. Good to have him. "So, again, that just proves how valuable a cricketer is to any team that he turned out for. I think he, being the leader of the attack, is going to thrive off that responsibility. And, yeah, he's a quality critic, as you know, the relentless that he has with the ball, whether that be a new ball or a ball," he added. Stokes returned to competitive cricket last month after recovering from a left hamstring injury and is feeling "great" physically. "Physically, well, I mean, when I was 20, I didn't even know what stiffness or anything was. Obviously, now, 34, you know, everything is just naturally just a little bit harder to do," he said. "But I've worked hard to be where I am here today and, you know, physically where I'm at. It's great, you know, ready to go and just a bit more sensible, I guess, about my build-up. You know, work hard for, you know, the first two training days, two days out, and then, you know, sort of very, very chill than like the day before, just to make sure that everything is going to go come game day," Stokes added.
