'Legacy Of Number 3': Fans React As Cheteshwar Pujara Hands Sai Sudharsan Test Cap

Fans couldn't stop the comparisons and 'baton transfer' feelings as Cheteshwar Pujara handed Sai Sudharsan his debut India cap before the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley.
Former India number three Cheteshwar Pujara handed Tamil Nadu batter Sai Sudharsan his debut India cap before the first match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley in Leeds on Friday (June 20). He becomes Test number 317 and likely the new batter for the crucial one-down position.
Fans on social media found it quite a wholesome moment, a passing of the baton of sorts. Pujara made his debut in 2010 as a middle-order batter but was asked to take up the number three spot permanently when Rahul Dravid retired. Pujara has not retired yet, but has been out of favor of the Test side since the World Test Championship final in 2023.
Initially, Shubman Gill took over the number three position. Though he scored some runs there, he never looked quite at ease technically. After his appointment as the captain and Virat Kohli's retirement, he has decided to drop to number four, and will bat there starting from the Headingley Test.
Fans on social media found Sudharsan as more of a natural fit and the team's gesture to ask Pujara — who's there as a pundit — to hand over the cap also enhanced that feeling.
One user reacted: 'From one No.3 to another… 🫡 Pujara gives the Test cap to Sai Sudharsan. A beautiful passing of the torch moment at No.3. 🥹❤️"
Another said: 'From the monk of No. 3 to the apprentice Pujara handing the cap to Sai Sudharsan isn't just a gesture, it's a handover of discipline, grit, and quiet defiance. A new chapter begins where the old one stood tall. 🙌"

As expected, Sai Sudharsan has been handed a Test cap. He's impressed everyone who has watched him. Handed the cap by Cheteshwar Pujara. Sort of a passing of the baton, even though Che would believe he's far from done. #ENGvIND — Saurabh Somani (@saurabh_42) June 20, 2025

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma ruled out of Zimbabwe Test series with hamstring injury sustained at WTC final

After guiding South Africa to a historic World Test Championship win last week against Australia with a strained hamstring, captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the Proteas two-Test series against Zimbabwe, set to start on June 28. 'Proteas Men's Test captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe due to a left hamstring strain. Bavuma sustained the injury while batting during South Africa's second innings on day three of the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia at Lord's Cricket Ground. He is set to undergo further scans to assess the extent of the injury. Keshav Maharaj will captain the side in his absence,' the South Africa cricket team's X account posted. Bavuma was injured in the second innings of South Africa's five-wicket victory, soldiering on as he scored a crucial 66 in a match-winning third wicket stand of 147 with centurion Aiden Markram. Keshav Maharaj will captain the side in Bavuma's absence, with no replacement named in the squad for the latter. 'As much as the Aussies were saying we were chokers in the field, we never made it our thing. We just said we've got to keep going and be relentless, and the harder we knock, the doors will open. Chokers was not our tag to carry, we never spoke about it, although you always feel a responsibility when you wear the badge,' Bavuma had said earlier this week at the Cricket South Africa headquarters, where his side were given an official welcome. The win over Australia gave South Africa their first major trophy since 1998, when they won the ICC KnockOut Trophy (later rebranded as ICC Championship Trophy). The Proteas received a grand welcome after returning home on Wednesday. Bavuma's men were greeted by several thousand supporters when they landed in Johannesburg following a five-wicket win over Australia in the final at Lord's last week. The first test vs Zimbabwe will be played from June 28-July 2 at the Queens Sports Club, with the second also in Bulawayo from July 6-10.

Disappointment Galore! Sai Sudharsan Departs For Duck On Test Debut

Last Updated: Sai Sudharsan's Test debut for India vs England ended in disappointment with a four-ball duck by Ben Stokes on Day 1 of the Headingley Test. Star India batter Sai Sudharsan's Test debut didn't go as planned as he departed for a four-ball duck in India's first innings against England on Day 1 of the Headingley Test on Friday. The 23-year-old was outsmarted by England skipper Ben Stokes, as Sudharsan's nerves got the better of him. Coming in to bat after Brydon Carse had dismissed a well-set KL Rahul for 42 in the 25th over, a lot of eyes were on Sudharsan, who had won the purple cap in the recent IPL 2025 due to his stupendous run-scoring spree. Sudharsan was challenged first up as Carse's last delivery of the 25th over swung back into him. He defended well, and since it looked like a bat-first situation, England didn't go up for the review. The third delivery that Sudharsan faced, from Stokes, pitched down leg, but the English players did go up in an appeal. But on the next ball, the Indian youngster made a nervy blunder to draw an early close to his innings. It was a stupendous plan from England, and Sudharsan fell into it. Stokes put fielders all around the debutant to increase the pressure. The plan was to make him doubt the shot that he plays. Sudharsan knew there were a few men behind him and went for the flick, which was a soft one, but he managed an edge which Jamie Smith caught while diving to his right. Watch the video here: At lunch on Day 1, Yashasvi Jaiswal was batting on 42 off 74 deliveries with eight boundaries as the twin strikes took some sheen off a brilliant session for India. Rahul put on 91 runs for the first wicket with Jaiswal, making 42 from 78 deliveries with eight boundaries. First Published:
