Watch Danny Dyer call himself a ‘p***k' as he opens up about drug-fuelled benders and split from wife Jo in The Assembly

The Sun26-04-2025

DANNY Dyer admits wife Jo deserved better when she kicked him out the house for his wild drug-fuelled partying.
The actor, 47, faces a tough grilling from people with autism and learning disabilities in the new ITV programme The Assembly, with no subject off limits.

In a new clip from tonight's show, one plucky young woman asks about his split from Joanne Mas.
She says: "When Jo kicked you out she emptied your shared joint bank account, do you still have a shared bank account now?"
Danny furrows his brow and jokes he was going to give the girl a hug before she hit him with the stinging question.
He then candidly accepts he was thrown out and says: "I was a p***k and she deserved better.
"Sometimes I'd go out, get off my head, take drugs; I wouldn't come home for three days.
" She had every right to throw me out. She controls everything now."
Danny and Joanne got together in 1992, and have three children - Love Island's Dani, 27, daughter Sunnie, 17, and son Arty, six.
The Rivals favourite previously admitted to being guilty of cheating before they married in 2016.
Speaking to The Times, Danny said: "It was a mad period. I do now realise what's important to me are my family. They are everything.
"I tried to fill it with the drink and drugs and doing stupid things. I was a lost soul.
Danny Dyer takes swipe at his kids as he defends his 'working class roots' after sending son to private school
"I had a 'f*** it' button and I would destroy relationships before I could be left."
In The Assembly, he also gets called out for sending his son Arty to a posh school - despite being known as a hardman from London's East End.
"How working-class was it to send your son to a private school?", asked one audience member.
"Good question," said Danny, who is also a dad to daughters Dani and Sunnie Dyer.
"I'm very proud of my roots, but do I want to be living in an environment where, especially at the moment where there's helicopters going over my house all the time and sirens all the time, a lot of crime? Of course you don't.
"So what you want to do is, you want to earn some money and then move to a better area where you can bring your children up.

"When you have kids, you want to give them everything you can.
"Sometimes it backfires on you slightly because now they're not street-wise.
"I walked everywhere as a kid or I had to get a bus.
"I don't think they've ever been on a f***ing bus, my kids.
"They don't have to, do they? Because they get driven door to door by a Bentley."
Danny is the first celebrity interview of the series to be aired this weekend.
The new ITV show will also see ex Doctor Who actor David Tennant Match Of The Day presenter Gary Lineker and ex-Little Mix singer Jade Thirlwall face the panel's questions.
The Assembly starts Saturday at 10.05pm and continues at 10pm on Sunday on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player

Danny Dyer reveals how dressing dilemma made him give up drugs

Appearing on The Louis Theroux Podcast, the former EastEnders star described the moment he knew he was 'destroying' his life after celebrating a win at the National Television Awards (NTAs). 'I just could not work out how to get my jeans on. 'I was just sitting on my en-suite toilet trying to work out what leg goes in what,' he told Theroux. 'I've sort of had many of them moments over the years, of me being completely off my head. 'But that one really resonated with me. 'It was more because I looked up, my wife was just watching me and she looked shattered and she looked ill.' Dyer, who has spoken before about his drug abuse, said he knew it was having a bad effect on his wife Jo, as well as their children. He added: 'It was just this moment, I thought, shit, you're going to die. You're going to kill yourself. You're not happy. You're spanking all your money on drugs. You're destroying everything around you.' Dyer, who has been filming the second series of hit drama Rivals, also spoke of his frustration at being encouraged to talk in an American accent as he tried to build a career in Hollywood a few years ago. He told Theroux that, instead of convincing them with an American accent, 'everyone thought I was Australian'. Dyer added: 'They wanted me to live there for six months, and I had small children and I hated the fact that they wanted me to speak American all the time, which is what you're meant to do out there.' He told Theroux that he is extremely proud of his upcoming film, Three Quick Breaths, in which he plays the only role, describing it as maybe 'my Hamlet'. 'We shot it in 10 days in Dublin and I had to learn 15 pages a day,' he said. 'Maybe this was my Hamlet, maybe that narcissist in me thought, can I be the only one in a film? I watched it and I'm really proud of it.' The Louis Theroux Podcast is available on Spotify and all podcast platforms.

Love Island fans left in shock as 'hypocritical' Harry confesses to having an orgy with an entire women's football team

Love Island fans were left in shock during Monday's show when 'hypocritical' Harry confessed to having an orgy with an entire women's football team. Viewers saw the return of the Got The Receipts challenge that sees contestants slide down a conveyor belt, swipe their card and pick up a receipt, which reveals a fact about an Islander of the opposite sex. They then have to decide who they think the fact is about and kiss their chosen person, before finding out if they got it right. One receipt read: 'This boy has had an orgy with an entire women's football team.' The culprit was revealed to be Harry, with the girls exclaiming: 'It's Harry! I'm not sure we should be clapping for that.' Viewers at home were equally as shocked at the confession and slammed his 'double standards' on X. They shared: 'Harry is just a big gigantic red flag!!!'; 'And if I say Harry made that up because I can't see 11 women sleeping with him'; 'Harry is such a hypocrite?? Judging Helena for being a 'party girl' yet he has had an orgy with an entire football team?? What else is harry hiding? He is 10x worse yet degrading Helena?? The men this year are horrible'; '"The whole women's team" ok Harry someone's telling fibs'; 'Harry's acting like this and he's…thirty?'; 'Love Island just shows the double standards women face on a daily basis. Harry was judging Helena for being a bit freaky meanwhile he's slept with a whole football team.' The challenge took a disastrous turn as the boys cooked up an outrageous game plan which instantly backfired. Ben thought that Helena was the girl that was caught with handcuffs in her case while travelling, and Conor though that Toni picked up the phone while getting down and dirty because of a job. However, three of the boys decided to play their own game within the game. The rest of the group had no idea that Harry, Dejon, and Shea had got together and agreed that they would lock lips with the girl they fancied, rather than who they though the fact was about. Viewers at home were equally as shocked at the confession and slammed Harry's 'double standards' on X But later on in the episode their secret plan was revealed after Tommy pointed out that they all kissed someone that they were attracted to. Harry told him: 'We were all like, boys lets just forget the question and just say who you wanna kiss - so Shea was like I wanna kiss Megan, when he read it out, me and D said, "That's Megan!"' Tommy replied: 'Oh my God, f****ng hell! What do you think will happen tonight then? That will all come out?' The landscape gardener then decided to share the information with his girl Megan. She confessed: 'We f***ing knew it!' Tommy continued: 'Shea said, "When it's my turn say Megan" - I think that's out of order. I don't like confrontation, but I will stand up for what's right.'
